Review –
Are you worried about your hard disk failure? Now, internet have pretty cool solutions for you. And, Ashampoo HDD Control 3 is no exception that can help you get out of all these problems.
Ashampoo HDD Control 3 is not only data-storage (say it can be hard-disk, usb-drive, sd-card, etc.) monitoring software, but it also help you to wipe sensitive data (or redundant files) and restore accidently deleted files. Also, you can perform maintenance to run your hard-disk always as fast as it can.
Now let’s get started how this software can get useful to you and how it works.
Installation is not different from any other Ashampoo software. So skipping this process, coming to the main UI board of Ashampoo it shows the hard-disk info section with general details about the tabbed storage device. All small details are given in the image itself.

The downward arrow, labelled as “E” is nothing but to expand that section into more detailed thereby giving more insight to the current storage summary (in short, Maximise HDD control 3 window).

Ashampoo HDD Control 3 also support S.M.A.R.T. data test. For those who don’t know about S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology) is a monitoring system included in computer hard disk drives (HDDs) and solid-state drives (SSDs) that detects and reports on various indicators of drive reliability, with the intent of enabling the anticipation of hardware failures.

And, to access all the information that is with reference to data storage technology, then you are at right tab to know all these details about your hard-disk. In short, in simple terms, if you want to compare how your hard-disk is better than other than compare on all the benchmarking standards given here.

The more interesting thing to tinker with your hard-disk is to run the benchmarking on your hard-disk and for that you even you don’t need any other software. Yes, from Ashampoo HDD Control 3, feature labelled as “D” can be used to run benchmarking tests on your storage device. I have done a sample benchmarking on my PC and just to check its potential, in the start no other app is running, but in the middle of time I started copy of a huge file from one partition to other. And, the last drastic downgrade in performance it because I started antivirus scan too.

If you are not satisfied with the S.M.A.R.T. analysis done first time by the HDD Control after getting installed. Then you can run all these S.M.A.R.T. tests or even S.M.A.R.T. extended tests again from feature labelled as “C”.

Also, from here you can run surface test of your hard-disk.

One more interesting feature I found is APM (Advanced Power Management) which adjust the power supply to the hard-disk so that it run according to user’s choice (for better understanding, consider it as the Power Plan in laptops Power Saving, balanced, High Performance -> the more power it take the more speed you will get).

Till here what features can be found in most of the Hard-disk monitoring utility but when it comes to Ashampoo, they provide more whatever else available in the other software. So let’s have a look at all other features too.

2. Network – Here, you (Administrator) can access the hard-disks connected to the network connected PCs except flash-drives or RAID- enabled hard-disks. And the steps to access the disks is also very easy, just type the username and password required to login to your network and you are ready to look and access all of them.

3. Defrag – As defragmentation is very useful for making some data arrangements inside hard-disk so that the clusters of a single huge file or small file in same area should be at minimum distance as possible so that hard-drive doesn’t need to do longer jumps thereby saving some time and getting more speed from your hard-disk. So here manage all the partition and hard-disks including externally connected drives and defragment them. Also, it has one more useful feature called Proactive Defragmentation which automatically defragment it at schedule time in the background without user intervention.

4. Drive Cleaner – This tool searches for all the temporary or not useful files in your drive and help in deleting them all right from a single window. So, now you can free up GB’s of space from your hard-drive that is not useful.

5. Internet Cleaner – This tool focus the search only on junk created by web browsers in the form of cookies, internet cache, session files, etc. In just few click, you are all done to finish all this data out of your system.

6. Disk Space Explorer – This tool help you to analyse how your drive size of filled up. It list down all the folders and the space acquired by this folder on disk. Thus you can delete some unnecessary files not useful to you and not found out by Drive cleaner (PS: Should be cautious while deleting as you may delete files required by Windows or any program).

7. Duplicate Finder – It helps you in finding the duplicates files found on your drive. It check the various meta-data to ensure the better results.

8. File Wiper – It allows you to permanently delete the file or sensitive data using one of the wiping algorithms. This ensures that no one can ever recover this confidential data (if any) thus giving you more security of your files.

9. Undeleter – If you have accidently deleted your files then don’t worry, this tool helps you in recovering deleted data (except if it done by File Wiper or any other wiping method/tool, where it is impossible to recover).

Now coming to the settings part, it has whole bunch of tweaks to tinker with.

“Basic Functions” – Change language of HDD Control 3, password protect your Ashampoo HDD Control 3 from any unauthorised access and configure Ashampoo service channel behaviour.

“Drive Cleaner” – Here, select what program file type should be supported to clean while searching for them. Also, you can add exception so that these specific locations won’t be cleaned. Also, some more settings to change drive cleaner scan behaviour.

“Defrag” – Change defragmentation tool automatic run behaviour and to enable boot time defragmentation useful for unmovable windows files.

“Disk Space Explorer” – Provide the extensions which will be searched for while performaing file scan on your drive.

“File Wiper” – Here, select the wiping method that should be used by File Wiper for permanently erasing files. Note that, running more iteration will increase the time taken to delete the files.

“Undeleter” – Some small tweaks to do while searching for delete but yet recoverable files.

“Duplicate Finder” – Specify the drives to scan, extension to look for, etc. while performing a scan.

“Review” – Tweak settings that help you review your hard-disk status like health, current temperature, etc.

“Guard” – Let you change HDD control 3 start-up behaviour and notification behaviour settings.

Conclusion – Overall, Ashampoo HDD control 3 is a nice overall package that is bundled with some other useful features required to make your hard-disk run like a new product. Also, temperature warning and Hard-disk health features allows you to monitor hard-disk at every point. Advanced Power Management is one of the cool feature which helps you to get most out from hard-disk.
