Quote:It has long been rumoured that Apple has deliberately slowed its iPhones, when a newer phone is launched. And no, this not done to make users to upgrade to the newer phones.

While the actual fact that Apple slows down the phones has never been proven before, many users complain about this, especially when a new major version of iOS is released for their device.

That is not the reason why your iPhone is slow either. According to John Poole, a developer from Geekbench, who has charted the performance of the iPhone 6S and iPhone 7 over time from iOS 10.2.1 to 11.2.0, the updates from Apple throttled the devices. This can be seen in the above image from Twitter user, Sam Si.

That is, Apple deliberately under-clocked the phone’s processor to run at lower clock speeds. The reason for this, according to an official statement from Apple (to The Verge), is that the devices are throttled to prevent the iPhones with Lithium-ion batteries which have aged over time, and lost their original capacity (battery wear), from shutting down abruptly.

This confirmation from Apple does seem to make sense. But is it acceptable. You see, when a device slows down, the user is likely to think about replacing the device, not replacing the battery. This results in the user upgrading to a newer iPhone. Apple should do better, and instead explain to the user that replacing the battery is a cheaper solution.

This is in fact something that many reddit users, have claimed. They say that after replacing their batteries, their phones work faster.
