Backup types

Backup4all is one of the pioneer backup applications that implemented four fundamental backup types.

Full backup is the starting point for all other types of backup and contains all the data in the folders and files that are selected to be backed up. This type offers faster and simpler restore operations.

Differential backup contains all files that have changed since the last FULL backup. It shortens restore time compared to a full backup or an incremental backup

Incremental backup stores all files that have changed since the last FULL, DIFFERENTIAL OR INCREMENTAL backup. The advantage of an incremental backup is that it takes the least time to complete.

Mirror backup is identical to a full backup, with the exception that the files are not compressed in zip files and they cannot be protected with a password. It can be accessed with windows explorer. First mirror will back-up everything, subsequent fast mirror backups will back-up only new/modified files

Backup4all is able to keep track of the files added/modified/deleted in a unique way as it stores a summary snapshot of the file information into a backup catalog file (.bkc). Each time a backup job is run the catalog file is updated.

Backup Features:

Highly Configurable

Backup4all offers four backup types to choose from: full backup, differential backup, incremental backup and mirror backup. By default it uses a smart backup option to automatically chose which backup type to execute for optimizing backup speed and keep the most file versions possible without exceeding the allotted storage space.

Cloud Backups

With Backup4all you can back-up your data in the Cloud to Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, Dropbox, BOX, Amazon S3, Microsoft Azure, Hubic, Hidrive and more than 37 Amazon S3 compatible cloud destinations. This way you benefit from the most powerful infrastructures for protecting online data, while using the backup program you're used to.

Smart Backup Type

Backup4all employs a unique system that decides automatically what backup type to use in order to save the most file versions (within the same allotted storage space) on your destination and improve the backup speed. Using the smart backup option you optimize the backup process and reduce decision time as you don't have to compare various backup types to chose what's more suitable.

Block-level Backup

Block-level backup speeds up the backup process of large files as it only back-up the modified blocks of data instead of the entire file. As an example, if you have a backup job for a large Outlook profile, whenever you receive a new email Backup4all knows to back-up only the bits of data that modified rather than the whole PST.

Data backup to DVD, CD and Blu-ray

Backup4all comes with its own built-in DVD/CD/Blu-ray disc burning engine. This means you don't need separate software to burn your backups to DVD, CD, HD-DVD or Blu-ray. However, if you prefer, you can still use 3rd party packet writing software to burn your CDs/DVDs/Blu-ray discs.

Backup and Restore Wizards

Backup4all was designed to be an easy-to-use backup program. It offers helpful wizards for backing up and restoring. The backup wizard lets you create a new backup job by selecting Where, What, How and When to backup. Restore is even easier, it takes just one click to restore data.

Backup open files

This backup software uses the Volume Shadow Copy service. It allows you to back up open files (local) from NTFS partitions in Windows Vista, XP, 2003, 2008 Server and Windows 7. For example, you can backup Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express emails and settings without closing them.

Automatic backups

Using Backup4all's built-in scheduler you can define backup jobs that back up automatically your important files at specific dates. You can also set extra actions to perform before and/or after the backup execution. Backup4all has also a command line version.

Predefined backups

Predefined backups, such as Backup4all Configurations, Google Chrome Bookmarks & Profiles, Internet Explorer Favorites, Mozilla Firefox Profiles, My Documents, My Pictures or Windows Live Mail, make it easier to back-up specific applications or data. Additionally, other backup plugins can be freely installed from our extensive online library.

Test backup

The application tests the backups (using CRC32). This ensures that the files have been backed up properly and the backup is safe. You can also test the backup integrity at a later time from Backup4all's main menu. When backing up to removable media, after each media item written the backup test is performed (for spanned backups). When backing up to FTP, the XCRC command can be used (if supported by server). This speeds up the testing as Backup4all will verify the backup based on the CRC information received from server.

Online Backup

FTP Backup Software

You can keep an online backup of your data to a remote location using FTP connection (with SSL, active/passive transfer modes, firewall support).

SFTP Backup Software

Backup4all can backup to SFTP, a destination combining the security of remotely stored backups, with secure file transfer protocol. Your important data is transferred to the SFTP backup server using a secure network connection, to avoid the risk of data interception.

Filters

File and Folder Filters

Powerful file and folder filtering engine with lots of options to filter by attribute, size, date, name and type). You can create filters using a combination of restrictions and you can define separate filters for inclusion and exclusion.

Predefined Filters

Filters can now be added through the Options window, and once you set some predefined filters you can use them in any backup job. If you change the predefined filter at a later time, it will be automatically modified on each backup job that uses it too.

Notifications:

Backup4all shows messages when certain actions occur (i.e. when finishing a backup). These notifications can be shown in a pop-up window or be silently saved in the Messages panel.

Email Notifications

You can configure Backup4all to send custom emails after a backup finished, with success, error and warning notifications. Additional options allow you to attach the backup log file and send the email to several addresses.

Compression

Standard Zip Compression

Backup4all creates standard zip files. This format is compatible with any zip utility currently available on the market. Unlike other backup programs, for zip files greater than 2 GB, Backup4all uses ZIP64 technology. This allows unlimited zip file size and also lets you encrypt your data using AES encryption (256-bits).

Mirror with Zip

The Mirror backup type creates by default an exact copy of files and folders selected as sources. This backup software gives you the option to compress files individually using standard ZIP compression. Furthermore, AES encryption can be used so that each file is encrypted and protected (the file/folder names are obfuscated in the zip archive).

Security:

Password Protection

You can protect your ZIP files by setting a password for each backup job. Besides normal password protection, Backup4all also supports 128-bit, 192-bit and 256-bit AES encryption. These numbers reflect the encryption key size used to encrypt the data - a higher key strenght provides stronger encryption.

Program security

Backup4all offers an option to lock its interface so that when it starts you will need to provide a password in order to unlock it and be able to make changes to its settings.

Ransomware protection

WannaCry Ransomware is one of the most aggressive crypto-viruses as it will encrypt your data and you will not be able to access it unless a ransom is paid. Backup4all protects your data against WannaCry Ransomware (WannaCrypt) by backing it up online to Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive or other popular remote destinations. Thus, even if your data gets encrypted by WannaCry or other ransomware viruses, you'll still have uninfected copies stored online.

Application Plugins:

Free Backup Plugins:

You can load plugins for backing up or restoring specific programs' settings or other custom data (like game saves, email data, etc.).

Microsoft Outlook backup plugin

Backup4all includes a backup plugin that lets you easily define a backup job for Microsoft Outlook. This will backup Outlook entirely (not only the emails but also the profiles, email accounts, rules and other settings) so if you need to restore it, you don't have to configure the email account settings again as they will be restored along with the other data.

Statistics, Logs and Summary:

Statistics

You can actually see the number of files that will be processed at next backup (very useful when you have a large number of files). Other information refers to the size and date of the executed backups and the available free space on storage destination.

Logs

The operations performed by Backup4all are logged. This allows you to see the status of performed operations (backup/test/cleanup/restore). A backup job/group History view is available too (which also lets you export the information as .csv).

Summary

Text description of the full setup for each backup job that allows you to easily review the information regarding the backup.

Version Tracking

Backup4all is a backup software that offers unique mode to track file versions. You can selectively restore any previous version of a file directly from the main window.

Create a new backup job:

This can be easily done using the New Backup Wizard (if this option is checked in the preferences) or backup properties. The process is very easy, simply configure the backup name, icon and a custom description, then select one of the available destinations to save the backup. Next step lets you select the files and folders to be used for backup. Now, you need to specify the backup type from the drop-down list (smart, full, incremental, differential, mirror). Last step allows you to choose when to run the backup. That’s all!

Backup Properties wizard can be used to create new backup jobs in the advanced mode or to edit an existing backup job. It is similar to the new backup wizard with more options available for you during the backup process. There are more steps such as filters, compression, advanced and email.

File filtering provides an intuitive way to define what files and folders to back up or restore

Easy File and Folder Selection

You can browse a folder tree to select several files and folders as source of the backup or you can include or exclude them individually. Multiple files/folders can be added as Sources at once (drag-and-drop supported).

With Backup4all Professional you can easily backup to multiple destinations:

Local - back-up to the local HDD or to DVD, CD, Blu-ray/HD-DVD.
External  - back-up to external HDDs (USB/Firewire enclosures) or removable media (i.e. USB drives).
Network - back-up to network destinations (including mapped network drives)
Remote - back-up to FTP, FTPS and SFTP
In the Cloud - back-up online to Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, Dropbox, Amazon S3, Microsoft Azure, BOX, Hidrive, Hubic and over 37 Amazon S3 Compatible cloud destinations (i.e. Cisco, Google Cloud Storage, Hitachi, Tiscali, Verizon)

Options available during Backup:

Pause/Resume or Stop operation

The backup operation now supports pausing and resuming, so running a backup job can be interrupted and continued at a later time. There is also a Stop operation now, that when pressed will not Cancel the backup, but instead will save everything until that point when it was pressed.

Customized Zip Names

You can customize name prefixes for the zip archives, which store your backup versions. Backup4all also supports file/folder paths longer than 260 characters (turn off file parsing).

Create shortcut for backup job/group

You can create a "shortcut" of a backup job or backup group to a desired location. Whenever you will double-click that shortcut, the backup job defined will start running. You can make it a "one click backup" if you place that shortcut in the Quick Launch menu.

File warnings

File warnings are displayed to the user during backup execution if the user chooses so. These warnings are also written to the log file. Scheduled backups do not show these warnings even when this option is set.

Disk Spanning

Automated support for splitting your backup between many removable disks or even on the same media. You can specify the maximum size of the zip archives. When performing a mirror backup and using disk spanning you can choose not to split the files. This is a useful option because you can copy your music/movies to cd or dvd and not have them splitted up when the CD, DVD or Blu-ray disc is full.

Command Line

A command line version of this backup application is available too (that lets you run different operations using parameters).

Sidebar Gadget

Backup4all Professional installs a Sidebar Gadget if you are using Windows Vista or Windows 7. From this backup gadget you can directly control your backup jobs, any backup job can be started/paused/resumed/stopped/canceled or you can edit their properties.

Data Restore Wizard

Restore backed up data step-by-step. You can choose the version of files which will be restored and filter them to restore only the needed versions (file versioning applies to full, differential and incremental backups only). You can quickly restore the latest version of a file/folder as well as restoring versions of files backed up at a specific date.

The process is very easy and well arranged into a stepped wizard. This includes your selection in 5 steps; where do you want to restore (same or other location), how, what do you want to restore, to what date do you want to restore, filter the files, and finally; preview the files to be restored. That’s all!

Program Options:

These are located under the file menu and includes many settings that can be customized according to your experience. The settings are adjusted to the default suitable for most users. Settings are categorized under many  buttons (general, preferences, start up and many more)

Conclusion:

Backup4all is a professional data security and backup software that will help you to easy backup and restore your data. This is very important for you to avoid accidental file deletion or hardware failures. The program is very easy to use even if you have no experience. In addition, it is available at a a reasonable price

I have had nice experience with Backup4all Lite version. They have released 21 versions for PRO version7 in the last 15 months, Oct-2017 to December-2018. Same was the case with PRO version6, March-2016 to July-2017. Given by this logic I expect version8 in 2019. Hope the developer will have change of mind to allow a free upgrade to version8 for the giveaway.
