Spotify PWA on Google Chrome
Google Chrome 70 is now available for download and one of the new features coming to Windows with this release is support for Progressive Web Apps.

Also known as PWAs, this new technology allows you to use websites as applications, technically making it possible for users to connect to their favorite services right from the desktop, without the need for extra steps.

Furthermore, in addition to a faster launch, PWAs can also work offline, though it goes without saying that some services, like Spotify, require an Internet connection.

And last but not least, they also show notifications, which on Windows 10 means they would also push content to the Action Center and comply with Focus Assist rules.

On Google Chrome 70, the process of installing and using PWAs is as simple as it could be. Just fire up the browser, load a website that offers PWA, click install, and that’s pretty much it.

Of course, these steps take a bit more time to get used to, or at least the first time you do them, so let’s discuss the details to know exactly how to use PWAs on Chrome.

How to install Progressive Web Apps
On Windows 10, Progressive Web Apps can be installed from the Microsoft Store, but this isn’t the case in Google Chrome.

Google does not yet offer a PWA store, which would clearly be helpful, but instead the process is a bit more straightforward. The only problem is that you must know exactly which services offer PWAs, load their official links and then install them.

For instance, Spotify offers such a Progressive Web App here, and you need to load this link in Google Chrome 70. When you’re there, click the three-dot menu in the top right corner and you should see an option called “Install Spotify” just like in the screenshot below.

Clicking this button basically downloads and installs the Spotify PWA, and you should then see it in your Windows 10 Start menu. Clicking the Start menu item will launch Spotify in a separate screen, with no browser controls, but just like a stand-alone app.

It lets you pin the app to the taskbar, manage notifications, and interact with Spotify directly from your desktop. You can install as many apps as you want and launch as many of them as you want too.

If for some reason you want to uninstall a Progressive Web App, launch it and in the top right corner, there’s an option called Uninstall Spotify. Clicking it instantly removes the app.

For the time being, however, there are only a few services that are offer Progressive Web Apps, but after Google added this option in its browser, there’s a chance more companies would join this new push.

Google Chrome is currently the world’s number one desktop browser with a market share of more than 60 percent, according to NetMarketShare data. With Windows 10 close to becoming the top operating system for PCs, it’s pretty clear that such an improvement would be aimed at quite a significant number of users.

Google says it will also add Progressive App Support for other platforms with the release of Chrome 72, but the feature has already been implemented in the most recent version for Linux and macOS. To enable it, just launch the browser and in the address bar, type chrome://flags. Look for the following option in the list (you can copy and paste it in the search box at the top of the screen):
