Windows 10 Cumulative Update KB3140742 Increases Version to 10586.112
#1
This update continues to be available as a manual download

Microsoft silently rolled out a new cumulative update for Windows 10 a few hours ago, but as compared to the previous releases, this one is not shipped via Windows Update.

In other words, if you do want to get it running on your Windows 10 device, the only way to do this is to manually download KB3140742 using the official links and install it all by yourself.

While right now it’s not yet very clear why Microsoft hasn’t released the update via Windows Update, it seems that it actually brings significant changes on PCs deploying it. The Windows 10 version is bumped to 10586.112 - but remember that this update is only available for Windows 10 1511 (November Update) and now for those still running the RTM build (10240).

Just bug fixes and performance improvements

Other than that, it doesn’t seem to bring anything else that’s worth mentioning, so it’s most likely focused on fixing bugs and improving performance in specific scenarios, just like its predecessors. Also, if you install this new update, your computer is brought completely up to date, so if you’ve skipped any of the previous patches, that’s not a problem anymore.

Some users might be afraid to install this cumulative update since it’s not available via Windows Update, so to make sure that everything works as it should, you can always create a backup and to be able to restore just in case something unexpected happens.

We’ve already installed this cumulative update on several PCs here at Softpedia, and we haven’t noticed any bug or performance issue just yet.

We’ve reached out to Microsoft for more information on this Windows 10 cumulative update and will update the article when such details are provided. In the meantime, the official download links seem to remain up and running, so users can still get the update manually.
