[Review/Giveaway] O&O Defrag 24: Optimize Hard Disks And SSDs
#1
[Image: ccBirtH.png]

Fragmentation is the main cause of significant losses in performance in Windows. Due to the fact that the hard disk is the slowest component of a computer, its optimization is an especially important issue. There is nothing worse than when you want to do something on your PC and your computer is running slow. A disk defragmenter used regularly can speed up a PC of any age and get it working like new again!

O&O Defrag is the technologically leading defragmentation solution for Windows based computers. The software solves the performance and stability problems of Windows workstations and servers caused by fragmented hard disks. Don’t let a slow computer spoil your work or fun! Let O&O Defrag optimize your hard disks and – New! – SSDs and you can experience speed increases of up to 100%! Regular disk defragmentation optimizes your PC performance!

When you defragment, the files that Windows splits up when saving documents across the hard disk or SSD are put back in order again so that files can be quickly recognized and found by the SSD or the read and write heads inside your HDD. Speed increases of up to 100% are not uncommon, and your hardware suffers much less wear and tear!

If you spend a lot of time on your PC, slow system and program starts or system crashes while playing can be very frustrating. Periodic defragmentation often works wonders in bringing new life to a PC.

New SOLID method

By customer request, O&O Software has developed the defragmentation method SOLID in order to offer the user a choice adapted to his or her needs: SOLID/Complete and SOLID/Quick. Both methods sustainably extend the life of the SSD but differ in terms of the duration and protection of the hardware.

O&O DiskCleaner

The brand new in-built O&O DiskCleaner searches for and removes temporary and unnecessary files that are taking up memory and increasing fragmentation. O&O DiskCleaner also increases the security of your data, as private content (e.g. Thumbs.db, copies of documents, drafts of emails, Dumps) will no longer be kept as copies in unnecessary system files. Particularly in temporary files, temporary Internet files, thumbnails and the cache of the Windows Indexing Service may contain residues of highly personal data. With the help of this tool and with just one click, you can optimize the database of drives and decide which file types to delete.

Benefits of a clearly laid out hard disk

Whenever it saves data, Windows scatters file fragments all over the hard disk and this slows down access times considerably. Defragmentation reverses this by rearranging data and speeding up access times dramatically. This not only saves the user time, it also reduces wear on hard disks and extends their life expectancy. Defragmentation can even make the difference if you lose important data because chances of full recovery are better on a defragmented disk. Why? After defragmentation, it’s easier for data recovery software such as O&O DiskRecovery to restore files when they’re not scattered across multiple areas of a hard disk.

Automatic background defragmentation

Automatic defragmentation can be configured with just three clicks and optimizes your disks behind the scenes with no negative impact on your computer’s performance. You can set O&O Defrag to run defragmentation at a certain level of fragmentation, on particular days of the week, or whenever your screensaver is being used. Defragmentation can be paused and resumed whenever you want because O&O Defrag automatically recognizes where defragmentation was interrupted.

Recommended use

We recommend manual defragmentation for PCs that are being used heavily because only a user can decide when the time is right to give up the performance needed for running defragmentation. On computers using video editing or graphics applications, O&O Defrag can be configured to not start automatic optimization while certain programs are running. The default settings in O&O Defrag are more than adequate for ordinary desktop PCs running mainly internet or office applications. O&O Defrag is also perfect for notebooks. Whenever an external power supply is disconnected, O&O Defrag automatically goes into pause mode to save energy

Defragmentation methods:

O&O Defrag provides three methods for defragmenting a hard disk divided into zones. The choice of methods appears whenever you open the lower menu of the Start button. If you have explicitly disabled zone configuration, only the methods of the previous versions will be available to you.

SOLID/COMPLETE: SSDs save file fragments on morememory cells than needed. The resource and hardware friendly SOLID/COMPLETE methoddefragments these file fragments so that only the number of memory cells required will be used forreading and writing in the future. SOLID/COMPLETE can be used on both SSDs as well as harddisks.

SOLID/QUICK: this method designed especially for SSDs can provide them with a surfaceoptimization. This method is faster than COMPLETE.

OPTIMIZE: OPTIMIZE is O&O Defrag’s default method. It executes a SPACE defragmentation in all three zones of the selected drive. The files will be so arranged in order to maximize the resulting free disk space. It is the recommended default method because it works thoroughly as well as well as quickly

OPTIMIZE/Quick: OPTIMIZE/Quick provides a speedy defragmentation requiring very little hard disk usage. It defragaments files in all the different zones. It also moves files which are not located in the correct zone to the right one. This method is new in that it aggressively reduces fragmentation of extremely fragmented files, without having to analyze the entire file system.

OPTIMIZE/Complete: OPTIMIZE/Complete replaces or combines the properties of the previous COMPLETE-Methods. The user decides which method should be run on each zone (SPACE or COMPLETE sorting). A new sorting of the data allows the defragmentation to be done more thoroughly, but at a considerably slower pace than the standard Optimize method. This method is only needed when, for example, you want to rearrange the files on a hard disk following a large-scale program installation.

Methods of the previous versions:

The STEALTH-Method is recommended if you want to defragment a hard disk that is nearly full (only around 8% free space). Due to its design, STEALTH is also the method that takes up the least resources.

The SPACE method is the standard defragmentation mode. It defragments all fragmented files and ensures that consecutive free space is maximized. This method should be used for the regular defragmentation of partitions that are within the normal range of usage. As well as defragmenting fragmented files and maximizing consecutive free space, the Complete methods overhaul the position of your files.

COMPLETE/Name organizes all files according to filename and directory position. For example, all files that are in the directory Windows/System 32 will be placed next to each other on the hard disk. This method is particularly recommended for system partitions on Windows workstations.

COMPLETE/Modified sorts all files according to when they where last changed. This is especially suitable for data partitions on workstations, or for fileservers.

COMPLETE/Access organizes all files according to when they where last accessed. This method is particularly recommended for web servers.

These descriptions are intended only as a guide. An exact recommendation as to which method is suitable for which disk is impossible, because a completely accurate description of disk usage can hardly ever be provided. For example, data are often saved on what is actually the system partition.

Is it safe to defragment a Solid State Disk (SSD)?

It is appropriate to defragment an SSD. Recent research has shown that SSDs have a much longer lifespan than previously thought. Contrary to previous knowledge, it is almost impossible for home users to bring the SSD to its limits of writability.

I only use the classic version of windows 10 which is Defragment and Optimize Drives. But the windows 10 tool is not professional and does not offer many options like O&O Defrag 24.

Windows systems need their disks to be defragmented occasionally to keep them running in an optimal manner. When data becomes fragmented, files are slow to load, programs can become unresponsive, and a system's reliability can suffer. Fortunately, there are a variety of software utilities available that were designed to defragment data and prevent hard drives from becoming sluggish. O&O Defrag 24 is one of these utilities, and we were quite eager to test its ability to defragment our system's drives.
