Congressional Bill Aiming to Enhance Cybersecurity in Education

A new measure recently filed in the House would provide guidance for K-12 vendors on effective cybersecurity procedures. Furthermore, it aims to offer assistance in setting new funding priorities that benefit educational organizations, according to Edweek.
Rep. Doris Matsui introduced the Enhancing K-12 Cybersecurity Act on June 17. While legislators had previously submitted a similar bill in 2020, it failed, as the previous congressional term had concluded in December.
This bill seeks to develop a K-12 cybersecurity program that will train students, provide valuable lessons, disseminate best practices, as well as make recommendations on online security tools that school districts and states can purchase. DHS is asked to cooperate with school technology vendors and cybersecurity firms to identify good practices for securing the education network.
Doug Levin, the nation's K-12 cybersecurity director, is working to pass the Matsui bill. In case the bill manages to pass, then it is expected to result in significant regulatory action at both the federal and state levels.
Better cybersecurity laws are required for educational institutions
In anticipation of increasingly stringent government cybersecurity policies, district and agency educational institutions will turn to organizations that have created and adhere to a well-established set of best practices for cybersecurity, Levin added.
A bill introduced in Congress would create a new database overseen by the Department of Homeland Security. The bill can provide schools with recommendations for computer security tools and services. Moreover, it could offer schools and states the opportunities to apply for funding to improve their cybersecurity.
Matsui concluded “As cyber criminals grow more sophisticated and aggressive, we must provide the resources and information necessary to protect our schools” [...] “The Enhancing K-12 Cybersecurity Act provides a roadmap and prepares our cyberinfrastructure for the threats of tomorrow”.
