Windows 12 Back on the Table Thanks to New Release Strategy
A new Windows version is likely to go live in 2024
Jul 15, 2022 07:40 GMT  ·  By Bogdan Popa

Microsoft took everyone by surprise when it announced Windows 11, especially as the company insisted Windows 10 would be the last stand-alone version of the operating system.

The debut of Windows 11 therefore made many believe that Microsoft would return to rolling out new Windows versions regularly, and according to a recent report, this is precisely what Microsoft plans to do in the long term.

The next major Windows release could be Windows 12, and its debut could happen in 2024. This is because Microsoft plans to switch to a strategy that comes down to new Windows versions rolling out every three years, with feature updates for the most recent release to go live every year.

In other words, Microsoft will continue to ship Windows 11 feature updates until 2024, at which point the company will debut Windows 12.

At that point, Windows 11 will continue to get smaller updates, while Windows 12 will get feature updates for three more years until a new version of the operating system launches.

If the same approach is being used, Windows 13 should follow in 2027.

For the time being, however, there are a lot of questions left without an answer. For instance, it’s not clear if Microsoft will offer free upgrades from one version of Windows to the other. In other words, nobody knows for sure if devices currently running Windows 11 will be allowed to Windows 12 in 2024.

One thing seems clear, though. For Microsoft, shipping new Windows versions regularly makes more sense in the long term, though for users, this wouldn’t be such a dramatic change if free upgrades continue to be offered.

The arrival of Windows 12 makes perfect sense from a timing perspective. If the device devices get it in 2024, then the broad availability should be reached in 2025 when Windows 10 is projected to go dark. As a result, this schedule seems to suggest that Microsoft will continue to support only the two most recent Windows versions going forward.
