YouTube Rolls Out In-App Instant Messaging
#1
The chat service is available to only a few users for now

Sharing YouTube videos on mobile phones normally requires switching between applications and copy-pasting URL addresses. YouTube has decided to address this matter and has started rolling out a service with messenger capabilities for commenting on videos. Only a few users have access to the chat service for now, but access is expected to widen in the next period of time.

According to a report by Wired, YouTube has started testing a new "native sharing" feature within its mobile applications, allowing users to share videos easier, without having to copy-paste URLs and switch between multiple apps.

The highlight of this new feature is the fact that it allows users to comment on videos as part of private conversations, but comments can be posted publicly as well. The comments section is a good place to state opinions on videos, but it doesn’t exactly encourage real-time, flowing discussions.

The new native sharing service might actually turn YouTube into an instant messaging service, or at least similar to Facebook and Twitter in the sense that it will support private messages among a selected group.

Users can chat inside the YouTube app

The new feature allows users to chat about shared videos right inside YouTube’s mobile app. They can reply with another video and create large groups of users, while conversations are saved inside the app.

Facebook and Snapchat are aggressively competing for YouTube’s audience and their advantage is that they allow users to chat and share videos without having to leave the application. But now, YouTube has the chance to retain users and prevent them from exiting the app.

It’s a good business strategy for YouTube, as it means that its users no longer have to leave the app to chat with friends, which means less traffic for competitors to generate, namely Amazon which recently launched Amazon Video Direct, which allows users to post videos and earn royalties.

The new YouTube chat service is currently in a very limited rollout and the company has yet to announce when the service will be available to YouTubers from around the world.
