Introducing, Easy Clean: our new, simplified cleaning flow!

So, today we announced one of the biggest changes in CCleaner history! We’ve made a radical (but also optional) change to the cleaning flow that CCleaner users know and love. And here's why...

When CCleaner was developed 15 years ago, it was built by a techy, for other techies. Early CCleaner users had no problem understanding the different types of files available to clean, and what they all did. They understood how a machine worked and the benefits of cleaning one. But over time, that’s changed.

As CCleaner users helped clean their mums and dads (and whoever else's) machines, all the love in the tech community spilled over to the average day-to-day computer user. In nearly every survey we run, word of mouth still rates really highly when we ask how people heard about CCleaner. We love this, but a while back it also made us think about how we could better serve the wider community that use CCleaner today.

We started looking at CCleaner and its interface through the eyes of a non-technical CCleaner user and decided to design an alternative cleaning flow. We wanted to simplify cleaning, guide users through it, and serve up information in a way they understand (so they know what they're cleaning and the benefits of doing so).

So several iterations, some rounds of user testing (and even a new name) later, Easy Clean is finally ready!

Easy Clean provides a simpler, more intuitive interface and uses everyday language to explain the types of files that can be cleaned. Files are now categorized as either 'Trackers' or Junk' and when a user wishes to customize their clean, the purposes of each file type is explained (for example, Temporary Internet Files are described as ‘Files left behind when you visit websites’).

Give it a try
Simply update to version 5.57 and you’ll see Easy Clean in CCleaner’s toolbar.

Don’t worry, it’s still there!
Easy Clean sits alongside CCleaner’s original cleaning screen, which is now called ‘Custom Clean’. When an out-of-the-box clean is run, Easy Clean and Custom Clean deliver the same cleaning power, however, Easy Clean provides a minimal level of customization compared to Custom Clean, so loyal users can still adapt their cleans as they require.

Kaspersky has already released a patch in April

German cybersecurity agency BSI issued a warning concerning a security flaw in Kaspersky antivirus, recommending users to install the latest patches as soon as possible.

While the advisory (available in German here, so translation is needed) doesn’t include any details regarding possible cyberattacks based on the flaw, BSI warns that hackers only need to send a malicious email containing a crafted file to their targets and, in some cases, this file “doesn’t even need to be opened.”

The security flaw that BSI warns of is documented in CVE-2019-8285, and it was actually fixed by Kaspersky last month.

The issue allows for remote execution of arbitrary code on a vulnerable computer, and Kaspersky said only systems with antivirus databases released before April 4 were exposed.
"Patch already available for Kaspersky software"

The patch has already been released through the built-in update system of Kaspersky products, so if automatic updates are enabled, your device should be secure.

“Kaspersky Lab has fixed a security issue CVE-2019-8285 in its products that could potentially allow third-parties to remotely execute arbitrary code on a user's PC with system privileges. The security fix was deployed to Kaspersky Lab customers on 4th April, 2019 through a product update,” an advisory published by Kaspersky on May 8 reads.

Technically, all Kaspersky products with antivirus database are affected by the vulnerability. The vulnerability isn’t tied to the operating system version, so all Windows releases are impacted.

“This issue was classified as heap-based buffer overflow vulnerability. Memory corruption during JS file scan could lead to execution of arbitrary code on a user machine,” Kaspersky says.

In other words, the vulnerability can be exploited by simply having the Kaspersky security product to scan a crafted JS file, which can help an attacker achieve remote code execution and eventually take control of the target device.

How does MailWasher work?

MailWasher logs in to your email accounts at your internet provider and downloads a copy of the email allowing you to read all your email on the server. This will let you inspect and interact with your email. The built in spam tools determine what is spam and what is good email. You can easily mark email for deletion, report spam to authorities, bounce spam back to senders and train MailWasher to better recognize spam and good email. 

After sometime of use and training, simply pressing the ‘Wash Mail’ button will remove spam and unwanted email from the server and you can download the remaining good email to your email program.

How can you train MailWasher?

Normally this is how you would use Mailwasher with your email program,

- Click Wash Mail,
- Then you open, (or Mailwasher Opens) your email program,
- Click Send/Receive in there to check for new mail like normal.

Just leave MailWasher open to collect all your email, and turn off automatic checking in your email program (so it doesn't pick up the email before MailWasher). This will ensure MailWasher gets all your email first so you can remove the junk before it gets to your computer.
