DEAD AT 75   12/18/2018 12:17 PM PST      Penny Marshall, the amazing actress, comedian and director, has died ... TMZ has learned.

Marshall died Monday night at her Hollywood Hills home. We've learned the cause of death was complications from diabetes.

Penny's first recurring role was playing Myrna Turner on "The Odd Couple," which was directed by her brother. She also appeared on "Happy Days" with Cindy Williams, and they became famous from their spin-off sitcom, "Laverne & Shirley." It became a monster hit in 1976 and ran for 8 seasons. Her character's moniker -- the "L" for Laverne on her sweater -- became one of the most famous logos in television.  Penny's accomplishments were only beginning. She directed Tom Hanks in "Big" in 1988. She was the first woman in history to direct a film that grossed more than $100 million.   Penny also directed "A League of Their Own," and "Awakenings" starring Robin Williams.

Penny's family says, "Our family is heartbroken over the passing of Penny Marshall. Penny was a tomboy who loved sports, doing puzzles of any kind, drinking milk and Pepsi together and being with her family."

The family notes Penny gave Mark Wahlberg his first acting job in "Renaissance Man."

"As an actress, her work on 'Laverne & Shirley' broke ground featuring blue-collar women entertaining America in prime time."

"She was a comedic natural with a photographic memory and an instinct for slapstick," her family added. 

"We hope her life continues to inspire other to spend time with family, work hard and make of their dreams come true."   Penny was once married to Rob Reiner and once dated Art Garfunkel. She had an amazing lineage ... her brother was famed director Garry Marshall. She directed her daughter, Tracy Reiner, who played Betty in "A League of Their Own."

One of Penny's closest friends was Carrie Fisher. They had joint birthdays and Penny was godmother to Carrie's daughter, Billie Lourd.

Penny was a massive basketball fan and was a staple at Lakers and Clippers games for years.    Penny also famously directed the 1996 movie "The Preacher's Wife" starring Denzel Washington, and "Jumpin' Jack Flash" in 1986 starring Whoopi Goldberg.  

Her producer credits ain't too shabby either -- with movies like "Cinderella Man" and "Calendar Girl."

The family says a celebration of Penny's life will be held at a later date.   
Henry Winkler tells TMZ he worked with Penny even before "Happy Days," and knew from the start she was a very funny woman and an incredible talent. He says her comedic partnership with Cindy was akin to Lucille Ball, but more modern.

Many more celebrity tributes have been pouring in, with Albert Brooks posting on social media -- "R.I.P. Penny Marshall. So talented and funny. A big loss."

Katie Couric added, "I'm so sad to hear about the passing of Penny Marshall. #RestInPeace."

I'm happy to announce the release of IsoBuster 4.3.

This version features full support for the XFS file system. Exploring, extracting, finding missing files and folders etc.

Also new in this version is the support for brand new file extensions *.1Kn, *.2Kn, *.4Kn, *.8Kn and so on (instead of the generic *.dsk for instance). The naming convention has been inspired by the "Advanced Format (4K native)". Basically when IsoBuster now creates a generic block per block image file of a drive that natively contains more than 512 bytes per block, it uses the appropriate extensions: *.1Kn - *.64Kn.

In practice (because I haven't seen any other situation) you will encounter this on 4Kn drives (4096 bytes per block: *.4Kn) and Plasmon UDO2 drives (8192 bytes per block: *.8Kn). The beauty is that now any application immediately knows what the correct sector size is inside the generic image. IsoBuster's heuristic routines to determine the sector size by itself are unparalleled, and improved once again in this version, so IsoBuster doesn't really need it, but it will make life easier for everyone and it's ideal for images that contain data that doesn't 100% correlate to a specific sector size.

Global adoption of this straightforward extension naming convention will be a step forward dealing with generic more-than-512-bytes-sector image files.

But that is not all. As usual there are plenty of improvements, a few fixes and other new functionality, such as dealing with RAID and LVM data structures, WBFS and so on.

Open Image file drop functionality now also works when a file is dropped on the ListView (right pane) or breadcrumb control (top)
Implemented work-around to still load FAT (on USB sticks for instance) when the first x bytes of the BPB have been erased (by an unknown process / application)
Support format *.s01 again (disabled in previous version) after extensive testing to confirm that it works
Show "Managed Clone", not just "Managed Image File" where and when relevant. Changes in various screens and dialogues
Repaint TreeView icons if hovered over, to update the object's status (should it have been expanded already during a different process (e.g. Search))

Quote:Paying parking tickets or municipal water taxes is never fun—and it’s even worse when hackers have compromised your town’s payment system. Yet, that’s what happened in dozens of towns across the U.S. where cyber crooks have made off with the personal data of nearly 300,000 people.
Security research firm Gemini Advisory published a report Tuesday that provides new details on how vulnerabilities in Click2Gov, a widely used type of government payment software, has affected towns from Oceanside, Calif. to Sarasota, Fla.
The vulnerability has let hackers get onto the payment networks and steal credit card and debit card data when citizens use town websites to pay fines, taxes, and permits.
Reports of vulnerabilities in Click2Gov first surfaced in 2017 and, in September, cyber security giant FireEye confirmed the attacks were a nationwide problem.
The new Gemini report provides additional details about the extent of the hacks, and what the crooks are doing with the data. According to the firm, at least 294,929 payment records have been compromised in 46 U.S. cities, while criminals have earned $1.7 million selling the data on the dark web—typically for $10 per record.
Gemini’s Director of Research, Stas Alforov, told Fortune that Click2Gov has worked with many of the affected towns to patch the software, and that the breaches have arisen in part because of a lack of sophistication on the part of municipal IT workers.
The company that licenses the Click2Gov software, known as CentralSquare Technologies, did not immediately respond to a request for comments about the breach.
For the citizens using Click2Gov to honor their civic obligations, the breaches will not likely result in a financial loss since banks and credit card companies typically foot the bill in the case of stolen data. But the incidents do mean all of the aggravations that go with identity theft, including the need to replace their cards and possible damage to their credit scores.
Gemini’s Alforov says that many of the towns have addressed the Click2Gov vulnerabilities, but others have not, meaning the data exfiltration is ongoing.
Alforov added that the hackers behind the breaches do not appear to be particularly sophisticated, but that they have nonetheless figured out how to profit from the weak security of local governments.
Gemini was able to identify the affected municipalities by examining the addresses related to the stolen cards. Other affected towns include Laredo, Texas, Topeko, Kans. and Medford, Ore. A full list is available here.

Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S10 is likely to come with a reverse wireless charging feature that would technically enable the phone to charge other devices too.

A report from SamMobile indicates that this feature is indeed referred to by Samsung as Powershare, and it should be available at least on the high-end Galaxy S10 models launching next year.

Powershare would basically make it possible for the S10 to wireless charge other devices just like a typical Qi wireless charger. Similar capabilities already exist on the Huawei Mate 20 Pro, and Samsung is expected to embrace the idea as well, especially as it’s trying to differentiate its products from Apple’s.

The latest-generation iPhones already come with wireless charging support, and despite Samsung has been offering such features for many years already, the company wants its devices to boast capabilities that would make a bigger difference when compared to iPhones.

Larger batteries required
The bigger challenge, however, is to make Powershare work flawlessly, as the existing implementations have been unreliable, to say the least.

Plus, charging a different device basically involves the phone itself to come with a large battery in the first place, so that it is capable to transfer some charge to another product. While this could make sense for a smartwatch, for instance, it’s unlikely to be very reliable for a smartphone.

The largest battery available on Samsung’s flagships right now is the 4,000 mAh unit on the Galaxy Note 9, so technically, Samsung should equip the S10 with a battery pack that goes beyond this level in order for the reverse wireless charging to make any sense.

It remains to be seen if this feature will be offered on all Galaxy S10 models or only on the high-end configurations, which come with larger screens and therefore there’s more room for bigger batteries, but we’ll find out more in early 2019 when the device is projected to launch.

This time, a report from SamMobile indicates that one of the most anticipated colors on the Galaxy S10 may be exclusive to the cheapest version of the device.

The Galaxy S10 with a 5.8-inch flat display is likely to be the only one coming with a yellow color option, according to the cited source, whereas the more expensive siblings would also hit the shelves in white, black, green, and blue. All these colors would also be offered on the entry-level model too.

Ceramic body for 5G model
Referred to by many as Galaxy S10 Lite, the base version of the upcoming Samsung flagship is likely to come with a 5.8-inch OLED screen with no curved edges.

The reintroduction of this screen is a little surprising given that the past two generations no longer offered models with flat displays, but Samsung is probably trying to make the device as affordable as possible and a standard panel can help in this regard.

Little is known about the top-of-the-range version of the Galaxy S10 that would come with 5G support. While black and white versions are to be expected, it’s believed the device would boast a ceramic coating that would offer a more exquisite look and set this model apart from the rest of the lineup.

The Galaxy S10 with 5G capabilities may not become available for purchase at the same time with the other models, but Samsung is still expected to announce it during the February press event.

A red version of the Galaxy S10 was also rumored earlier this year, but this new report doesn’t seem to indicate that such a color option is currently under consideration at Samsung.

Most jailbreaks discovered recently have been disclosed directly to Apple, which fixes them in the latest iOS updates, so the number of unlocked iPhones has declined substantially lately.

As a result, the jailbreaking community is slowly but surely going dark too, and the past weekend, another major milestone was reached.

The Cydia Store, which was the largest in the jailbreak community, was shut down officially. While this was originally expected to happen by the end of the year, the creator of the store explains that a recently-discovered vulnerability was reason enough to pull the Cydia Store offline once and for all.

“The reality is that I wanted to just shut down the Cydia Store entirely before the end of the year, and was considering moving the timetable up after receiving the report (to this weekend).

This service loses me money and is not something I have any passion to maintain: it was a critical component of a healthy ecosystem, and for a while it helped fund a small staff of people to maintain the ecosystem, but it came at great cost to my sanity and led lots of people to irrationally hate me due to what amounted to a purposeful misunderstanding of how profit vs. revenue works,” Jay Saurik explained on reddit.

Certainly, Cydia was an essential part of the jailbreaking community, and the app store going dark is living proof that the days of jailbreaking on iPhones are numbered.

As for the security vulnerability discovered in Cydia, it may expose certain data of users who are logged in. Users have been recommended to remove their PayPal information from the Cydia accounts.

Recent statistics shared by SplashData reveal that the worst passwords in 2018 continue to be the typical “123456” and “password,” both of which have been at the top of the charts in the previous years too.

They are followed by “123456789,” because you know, three extra digits make a password a lot harder to break, and “12345677” because no hacker would ever think their targets are using an 8-digit password.

Way too many users sticking with celebrities’ names
One particular highlight is that “donald” has become one of the most common passwords this year because of you know who, all alongside other celebrities whose names shouldn’t by any means be used to protect accounts.

“Sorry, Mr. President, but this is not fake news – using your name or any common name as a password is a dangerous decision,” said Morgan Slain, CEO of SplashData, Inc.

“Hackers have great success using celebrity names, terms from pop culture and sports, and simple keyboard patterns to break into accounts online because they know so many people are using those easy-to- remember combinations.”

If anything, check the list below and make sure that you’re not using any of the passwords listed there. For what it’s worth, I recommend everyone to stick with password managers that makes it a lot easier to set up super-complex passwords and not to be forced to remember.

As if Apple’s problems with the iPhone weren’t enough, two customers are now suing the company for allegedly hiding the notch in the official photos of the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max.

In lawsuit papers, they explain that Cupertino is thus hiding the fact that the 2018 iPhones have fewer pixels that it seems, basically because the notch reduces the available screen estate.

“Defendant’s website is designed to encourage comparisons between the Products and Defendant’s other phones. These comparisons are misleading because the Products have false screen pixel counts that dramatically overrepresent the number of subpixels in the phones,” the lawsuit reads.

While the lawsuit is still pending class-action status, Apple’s alleged sneaky tactics to hide the notch basically comes down to using a black wallpaper that makes the upper part of the screen barely noticeable.

The notch is one controversial design choice that many criticized after being introduced on the iPhone X. Several Apple rivals mocked the company for launching a phone with a notch, including Samsung, but this eventually became a trend, with other device manufacturers embracing it, like Huawei.

On the other hand, the notch is considered to be one of the reasons sales of new iPhones fail to meet expectations, as more customers want to stick with the traditional design.

Apple tight-lipped on its notch approach
The lawsuit also reminds of the iPhone 8 Plus, which has a bigger screen estate that iPhone XS, as explained in the court documents.

“The iPhone X Product is advertised as having 2436×1125 pixels, but in fact does not use true pixels with red, green, and blue subpixels in each pixel. Instead, the Product has only false screen pixels, with just two subpixels per false pixel (2436×1125×2 = 5,481,000 subpixels), and it does not actually have any subpixels at all in the notch at the top of the screen or in the display-area corners.

In contrast, the iPhone 8 Plus has a higher quality screen than the Product, with more subpixels than the Product (1920×1080 pixels×3 subpixels per pixel = 6,220,800 subpixels).”

In pure Apple fashion, the company hasn’t responded to the lawsuit and it’s unlikely we’ll ever hear from it on this particular controversy. The full legal complaint is available here.

The country’s IT watchdog explains that after closely examining a series of Huawei products that are available not only in Germany but also in other markets across the world, it didn’t find any evidence that spying activities do take place.

"For such serious decisions like a ban, you need proof," the head of Germany's Federal Office for Information Security (BSI), Arne Schoenbohm, was quoted as saying by German newspaper Spiegel.

Huawei has come under fire lately over possible espionage in a series of countries, including in the United States, with local officials trying to reach out to allies in order to drop technology developed by the Chinese firm.

While no evidence has been found of any spying activity that might be based on Huawei’s products, several governments have followed the United States’ recommendation and started investigating the claims to determine whether the phones and network equipment built by the Chinese company pose any security threat.

Japan is one example, as the country has recently restricted Huawei from connecting to its 5G networks in an attempt to prevent any possible intention of espionage.

But even if the German government says it hasn’t found any solid indication that Huawei’s spying for China, local security experts emphasize the risk of this happening is extremely high. AFP talked with telecom security expert Ronja Kniep who warned that ignoring all spying concerns is wrong.

"Even if Huawei has no official relationship with the Chinese government, that doesn't mean Chinese services aren't using the company and its technology as vehicles for espionage,” he said.

The European Union itself has also started an investigation over the possible security risks caused by Huawei technology, and the company has already expressed its intention to fully cooperate with all authorities towards addressing such concerns.
