The European Union has a new law on the books for protecting data privacy. It's the General Data Protection Regulation, more commonly called the GDPR. This Friday, it goes into effect in the EU's 28 member states.

The law changes the rules for companies that collect, store or process large amounts of information on residents of the EU, requiring more openness about what data they have and who they share it with.

That means you, Facebook.

It also means any company with a digital presence in the EU (which for the time being still includes the UK) will have to comply with the law or face steep penalties.

The deadline to comply with the law has been looming for two years, ever since the European Parliament adopted it in April 2016. When the Cambridge Analytica scandal at Facebook emerged in March, privacy advocates found an eye-catching example of why internet users might want more control over who can access their data.

Quote:Microsoft's Windows operating system includes a set of power options that define, among many other things, when the screen is turned off. You can configure Windows to never turn off the screen when the device is connected to a power source.

If you do lock the screen occasionally or even regularly, you may have noticed that the setting is not honored by the operating system when you lock the system.

Windows turns off the display after 60 seconds when the system gets locked regardless of power settings. The display gets turned off in locked system state even if you have configured Windows to never turn off the display when the device is connected to a power source.

Windows comes with a hidden option in the Windows Registry to change that. You may edit the Registry to add a new option to the power configuration so that you may change the timeout value of the display when the system is locked.

You may like to see the date and time displayed by Windows on then lockscreen, get a glimpse of recent notifications, or simply check out the most recent desktop background, and that requires a different timeout setting to block Windows from turning off the screen when the account gets locked.

Note: The tweak applies only to the lockscreen when a user locks the computer. It does not apply to the lockscreen on start or when a user signs out.

Configure the lockscreen display timeout on Windows




The very first thing you need to do is make a change in the Windows Registry to unlock the new power configuration setting.

Note: I recommend that you create a backup of the Registry or even the whole system before you make changes to the Registry. While that is usually safe to do, editing the wrong value may lead to all kinds of issue including a non-booting operating system.

Here is how you do that:

Tap on the Windows-key, type regedit.exe and select the result to load the Windows Registry editor.
Go to Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power\PowerSettings\7516b95f-f776-4464-8c53-06167f40cc99\8EC4B3A5-6868-48c2-BE75-4F3044BE88A7
Double-click on the Attributes value.
Set it to the value of 2.
Tip: You can undo the change at any time by resetting the value to 1. Just perform the operation outlined above and set it to 1 instead of 2. Doing so restores the default status quo.

The values:

A value of 1 means that the setting is not displayed in the Power Options.
A value of 2 means that the setting is displayed in the Power Options.
You don't need to restart the PC after you make the change as the change is active right away.

Configure console lock display off timeout




The new option is added to the power plan configuration. Even desktop PCs that are always connected to a power source use a power plan on Windows.

Tap on the Windows-key, type powercfg.cpl and hit the Enter-key. Doing so opens the Power Configuration on the Windows device.
Select the "change advanced power settings" option on the "Edit Plan Settings" page. Note that you may change the display timeout and computer sleep timeout on the page if you want to adjust the values.
Select Display > Console lock display off timeout when the new Power Options window opens.
Adjust the timeout setting as you see fit. The lowest value is 1 minute.
You can try the new setting immediately by using Windows-L to lock the screen.

How To Defer Updates

Use the Windows Key + I to open the Settings App
Click on Update & Security
In the left panel, click on Windows Update
In the right panel, click on Advanced options
That should bring you to a screen that looks like this:



In the first drop-down menu there are two choices:

Semi-Annual Channel (Targeted) – This option will cause updates to be delivered to you when Microsoft thinks it should, probably sooner than later
Semi-Annual Channel – This option will delay update delivery to a schedule that resembles those of businesses. In other words, later rather than sooner (not late enough these days)

Feature Updates

The next drop-down menu lets you control what Microsoft calls Feature Updates. This includes major feature changes and additions such as those found in the infamous 1803 patch. You can set this anywhere from zero days to 365 days. As you can see, mine is set to 60 days. I’ll keep jigging this number upwards until I am satisfied that Microsoft has fixed the update, or at the very least, has brought it to a reasonably stable condition (i.e., where fewer people are complaining about it).

Quality Updates

Quality Updates include security patches such as Windows Defender virus definitions. These are important to stay abreast of, so I don’t recommend delaying this. You can, however, set this delay for up to 30 days.

No Guarantees

In the past, notably in Windows 7, Microsoft has not recognized these settings and has updated systems even though these delays were in place. I have not had this happen to me, but you need to be aware of it, just in case.

The same goes for Windows Home users. Normally, telling Windows Home that you are on a metered connection is enough to stop the unwanted updates, but again, this does not always work.

Why Microsoft would put in place these user controls and then sometimes ignore them is beyond me. Honestly, it only serves to lull their customers into feeling a sense of control which may not necessarily exist. The only true way to guarantee that you won’t receive these unwanted updates is to pull the plug. You’re right– I don’t like that option, either.

Open the password protected document in Word.
Click on File | Save As.
From the Save As drop down list, select Word XML Document (*.xml).

Enforcement

Replace the “1” with a zero “0”, or replace “on” with “off” to disable enforcement. This will unlock your document.
Save the .XML document with your text editor and close the editing software.
Right-click on the saved .XML file and click on Open with and select Microsoft Word.
As soon as you have opened your document, click File | Save As and select Word document (*.docx) from the Save as Type drop-down.
Change the name of your document if you would like to preserve the original password-protected document and make this a new document, or use the same name to replace your original document.
Click Save.

Google says it added this new security mechanism as a way to prevent malicious insiders, even those with the highest level of access, from tampering with its smartphones.

New security feature enhances an already hard-to-hack phone
This new security measure is just the cherry on top of an already super-secure device that even today comes with plenty of low-level firmware protections.

For example, Pixel devices use secure hardware components to store and handle the encryption keys used for encrypting the user's locally-stored data.

This "secure hardware" also runs its own set of secure firmware that checks the validity of the user's password and also protects the device from repeated attempts to guess a password (brute-force attacks).

This firmware is also protected by a code signing mechanism to prevent attackers from replacing the firmware altogether with one that bypasses password checks and just decrypts the data, no questions asked.

Phone password will be required for Pixel firmware updates
Here's where Google's new security feature comes in handy. By requiring a phone's password when replacing or updating this firmware, Google is making sure that an attacker has to compromise both the firmware's digital signature process and the user's device password at the same time. Compromising one is hard enough, but compromising both is near impossible.

It's a small update on Google's part, but one with great repercussions to device security. Sure, hacking a Pixel 2 phone was hard anyway, but not it just got many times harder.
