Windows Defender, the default antivirus solution bundled into Windows 8.1 and Windows 10, as well as several third-party security products have begun blocking BitTorrent client uTorrent due to a possible threat on systems running Microsoft’s desktop operating system.

The application is flagged as Potentially Unwanted Software (also known as Potentially Unwanted Application or PUA) by Windows Defender, ESET’s NOD32, Sophos antivirus engine, and a few others. Kaspersky, Bitdefender, Avast, and F-Secure all claim uTorrent is clean.

At this point, it’s not yet known what’s triggering the block, but it’s believed the built-in modules, like the Web Companion, might be the culprit, despite parent company BitTorrent describing these security warnings as false positives.

Small number of systems getting the warning
While the one to blame for this warning could be the software bundled with uTorrent, BitTorrent says the issue only affects one out of three installers hosted on its website, which is regularly served to just 5 percent of the users. This means a small number of systems got the warning, which in its turn is believed to be pushed by an update that Microsoft released on Patch Tuesday.

“We believe that this passive flag changed to active just hours ago with the Windows patch Tuesday update, when a small percent of users started getting an explicit block,” BitTorrent explained in a statement for TorrentFreak.

“We had three uTorrent executables being served from our site. Two were going to 95% of our users and were not part of the Windows block. The third, which was going to 5% of users, was part of the Windows block. We stopped shipping that and confirmed we are no longer seeing any blocks.”

Windows listing Lavasoft as verified publisher
There are several questions that remained unanswered even after BitTorrent’s statement. For example, while it’d make sense for new installs to be blocked following a patch released by Microsoft this week, it looks like the same warning is also shown in the case of systems already running uTorrent, and the cited source speculates this could be the result of an automatic update.

At the same time, blaming modules that are bundled into the installer, like Lavasoft’s Ad-Aware Web Companion, doesn’t seem to make much sense at first, as Microsoft lists Lavasoft as a verified publisher and thus its software is whitelisted on Windows.

BitTorrent says its installers are fully clean and there’s nothing wrong with uTorrent, and the company continues working with the other firms, including Microsoft and antivirus vendors, to address the alleged false positives.

Rock group Huey Lewis and the News have called off performing this year after singer Huey Lewis on Friday said he has lost most of his hearing and cannot "hear music well enough to sing."

The group, which was one of the biggest acts of the 1980s with hits such as "The Power of Love," "Hip to Be Square" and "If This Is It," had been scheduled to play at least 10 dates this year.

Lewis, 67, said in a statement on the band's website that he experienced severe hearing loss earlier this year.

"The lower frequencies distort violently making it impossible to find pitch," Lewis added.

The singer said doctors believe he may be suffering from Meniere's disease, an inner-ear disorder that causes vertigo, ringing in the ear and permanent hearing loss.

"I can't perform until I improve," Lewis said about his doctors' advice after seeking treatment from three different clinics.

"Needless to say, I feel horrible about this, and wish to sincerely apologize to all the fans who've already bought tickets and were planning to come see us," Lewis added.

Huey Lewis and the News were scheduled to headline at least six concerts this spring and summer. They were also scheduled to perform at the Outside Lands Music Festival in San Francisco as well as open for Jimmy Buffett in Boston and Las Vegas.

Microsoft has released a new update for SwiftKey on Android, this time with some special goodies that you won’t find in a different third-party keyboard app.

Microsoft says the SwiftKey team worked together with other groups within the company to bring some exclusive content to its users, and today’s update includes a Halo sticker pack. This is the first time Halo stickers land on Android and they come in handy after the introduction of a new toolbar a few weeks back that introduced support for downloadable stickers and add-ons.

“The new Halo stickers make it easy to bring your passion for the game from your Xbox to your phone, giving you a new way to engage with your friends and opponents right from your device,” Microsoft explains.

Enter Skype emoticons
And the second, and likely more exciting improvement for people who aren’t the biggest fans of Halo, there’s the addition of Skype’s animated emoticons, which are now available on SwiftKey for the first time outside of the famous instant messaging platform.

This way, Microsoft is bringing together some of the most praised features of its messaging apps, though it remains to be seen how many people will actually use these new emoticons. There are 24 of them, and you can find the pack in the most recent version of the keyboard app.

Somewhat odd is that these improvements are only available for the Android version of SwiftKey, and Microsoft hasn’t said a single thing about any potential release planned for the iOS sibling. Most likely, Halo stickers and Skype emoticons will also land on iPhones at some point in the future, but for the time being, there’s no ETA on the table just yet.

KB4093112 is the April 2018 cumulative update for Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, and as we reported yesterday, it’s causing some issues on a number of systems, including the already traditional failed installs.

The number of reports pointing to such bugs is growing at a worrying rate, signaling another widespread problem with cumulative updates, though for the time being Microsoft is yet to acknowledge any such issue hitting KB4093112.

We’ve been monitoring posts on support forums online and it looks like more users are hitting similar failed installs, and the symptoms are pretty much the same as for other cumulative updates.

More errors, more problems
The post that we’ve quoted in yesterday’s report, and which reveals that Windows 10 cumulative update KB4093112 fails to install with error code 0x800f081f, has received more attention and right now has more than 60 “me too” votes, which means that more users are having the same problem.

Somebody else reveals that installing the same cumulative update ends up with error code 0x800f0900 (14 votes for the “I have the same question” button and counting), while two different users (here and here) say their systems are pushed into an infinite reboot loop after trying to install update KB4093112. The latter post has close to 60 votes from users who might be experiencing similar problems.

“My windows 10 64-bit version 1709 updating this KB4093112 updates in a loop, that is initializing, downloading (no download stream since the 2nd loop), installing (counting from 0% to 100%), after that, the installation restarting as a loop, what is wrong with that? I tried restart my PC but nothing help,” one user explains how the update fails on his system.

Microsoft hasn’t yet updated the KB page of KB4093112 with any new info on known issues, so users are pretty much on their own trying to get this one installed. Contacting Microsoft Support could help, though in some cases this involves spending up to several hours with engineers in order to have the bug fixed.
