That is the warning from one of the world's top health scientists following a winter plagued by the so-called 'Aussie flu' outbreak in the UK.

Dr Jonathan Quick, chair of the Global Health Council, said the flu virus is "the most diabolical, hardest-to-control, and fastest-spreading potential viral killer known to humankind".

And he was warned that if there was a global outbreak of a newly mutated strain it could kill up to 300 million people.

This winter's flu outbreak was a warning that the world needs to be prepared for a new strain of bird flu, which is most likely to break out, reports the Daily Mirror .   Dr Quick has warned that vital infrastructure including hospitals, and the global economy could all collapse under the pressure caused by a pandemic.

Speaking to the Daily Mail Dr Quick warned: "The conditions are right, it could happen tomorrow"

"It seems that's what happened in 1918 with Spanish flu and 1956 with Asian flu.

"The most likely culprit will be a new and unprecedentedly deadly mutation of the influenza virus. The conditions are right, it could happen tomorrow."  The last pandemic hit in 2009-10 when swine flu emerged in Mexico, while the deadly Spanish flu pandemic of 1918 claimed up to 100 million lives.

Also known as avian flu, three strains have caused concern in recent years - H5N1, H7N9 and H5N6.

Of those H5N1 poses the greatest threat of mutating and sparking the next killer pandemic, according to Dr Quick.

He said: "If a new and highly contagious strain of H5N1 were to evolve and hitchhike with an unwitting passenger on to an aeroplane, the pandemic situation would quickly assume disaster movie proportions."

But he said disaster could be averted if more investment was put into looking for a universal vaccine for the flu

A new vaccine being developed by scientists at the University of California, Los Angeles hopes to bring us one step closer to that reality.   In the meantime we are left with more conventional ways to contain a a flu outbreak.

Public Health England (PHE) has repeatedly plugged their Catch It, Bin It, Kill It campaign, in the wake of the Aussie flu and Japanese flu outbreaks that hit the UK this winter.

Dr Paul Cosford, medical director and head of health protection at PHE, said last week: "In order to prevent the spread of flu, it is important to practice good respiratory and hand hygiene and to avoid close contact with others who have flu symptoms."

The latest figures showed flu is still proving a problem across the UK, but that infections have "peaked", PHE said.   Earlier this winter, Plymouth was in the 'red zone' for parts of the country affected by so-called Aussie flu.

Deaths were confirmed in the UK and in Ireland following the outbreak.


It is not clear if any cases were ever reported in the city.

But it did lead to wide-scale warnings from Public Health England.

by Cameron Summerson on March 8th, 2018     Privacy is a major concern these days, and it’s easy to worry about smartphones that are “always listening.” To combat this, Google is making a major change to how background apps are handled in its upcoming Android P.

A Look to the Future
We’ve all heard the horror stories about malicious apps being able to take control of a device while running in the background. Take the recently-found Skygofree malware for example. It was capable of executing 48 different commands, including the ability to turn on your phone’s microphone and listen in on…whatever you’re talking about at the time.

That’s a pretty scary thought. Even if you “have nothing to hide” (that’s what people always say, right?), no one wants every conversation to be potentially public.

Regardless of what app is trying to spy on you, they all work the same way: leveraging access to the phone’s hardware while the app runs in the background. The thing is, why would an app need to access your camera or microphone while running in the background? There isn’t much of a good argument here, save for always-listening hotword detection (like OK Google). And that should be part of the core operating system in the first place.

To put that plainly: there’s no reason an app should need access to the camera or microphone while it’s running in the background. And starting with Android P, access to these hardware features will be blocked for apps running in the background.

A recent commit to AOSP (Android Open Source Project) shows a rule that would block background apps from accessing the camera. A second commit shows the same for the microphone. These two commits give you an idea of how these features will work, and both are already active in the Android P developer preview, which is available now for Pixel phones.

What You Can Do Right Now
While it’s cool that Google is taking steps to stop apps from spying on you in the background in a future version of Android, there are steps you can take to prevent apps from spying on you right now.

Check App Permissions
While you can’t prevent apps from having access to certain permissions only while they’re running in the background, you can control what permissions apps have access to overall.

To find this, jump into the Settings menu, and then choose the “Apps” category (“Apps & Notifications” on Oreo).

What you do from here depends on what version of Android your phone is running.

Android Nougat: Tap the Settings button in the upper corner, and then tap “App Permissions.” On Samsung Galaxy devices, you’ll find “App Permissions” in the menu, instead.

Next, tap a permission to see which apps can have access to it. For the sake of this piece, we’ll take a look at the Microphone permission.

 

As you scroll through the list of apps, ask yourself why each app would need access to the microphone. For example, Instagram needs it when recording videos, so that makes sense. But it may not be as clear for other apps. If something seems questionable to you, revoke access for that app by turning off the toggle to the app’s right.

If an app you disable needs access to the feature in the future, it will request access again. That may give you a better understanding of why the app wants the permissions, and if you should allow it.

Just repeat this process for every permission and your phone will be safer in no time.

In the middle of 2017, Doctor Web analysts discovered a new Trojan Android.Triada.231 in the firmware of some cheap models of Android devices. Since this detection, the list of infected devices has been constantly increasing. At the moment, the list contains over 40 models. Doctor Web specialists have monitored the Trojan’s activity and now we can publish the results of this investigation.

Android.Triada.231—one of the dangerous Android.Triada Trojans. These Trojans infect the process of an important Android system component, Zygote. This process is used to launch all applications. Once the Trojans inject into this module, they penetrate other running applications. In doing so, they obtain the ability to carry out various malicious activities without a user’s intervention: they covertly download and launch software. The key feature of Android.Triada.231 is that cybercriminals inject this Trojan into the libandroid_runtime.so system library. They do not distribute the Trojan as a separate program. As a result, the malicious application penetrates the device firmware during manufacture. Users receive their devices already infected from the box.

In the past summer, following detection of Android.Triada.231, Doctor Web security researchers notified manufacturers who produced infected devices. However, new smartphones models continue getting infected with this malware. For example, it was detected on the Leagoo M9 smartphone that was announced in December 2017. Additionally, our analysts’ research showed that the Trojan’s penetration into firmware happened at request of the Leagoo partner, the software developer from Shanghai. This company provided Leagoo with one of its applications to be included into an image of the mobile operating system, as well as with an instruction to add third-party code into the system libraries before their compilation. Unfortunately, this controversial request did not evoke any suspicions from the manufacturer. Ultimately, Android.Triada.231 got to the smartphones without any obstacles.

The analysis of this application showed it is signed with the same certificate as Android.MulDrop.924. Doctor Web previously wrote about this Trojan in 2016. We can presume the developer that requested adding the additional program into the mobile operating system image can be connected expressly or implicitly with the distribution of Android.Triada.231.

At the moment, security researchers have detected Android.Triada.231 in the firmware of over 40 Android device models:

Such widespread distribution of Android.Triada.231 shows that many Android device manufacturers pay little attention to security questions and penetration of the Trojan code into system components.
