Banking Trojan Found in Over 40 Models of Low-Cost Android Smartphones |

Quote:Over 40 models of low-cost Android smartphones are sold already infected with the Triada banking trojan, says Dr.Web, a Russia-based antivirus vendor.
The security vendor published today a list of 42 Android models its researchers analyzed and found to be infected with the Android.Triada.231 trojan.
Triada is a very powerful Android banking trojan discovered in early 2016. It can root devices and then infect Zygote, a core Android operating system process, where it's almost impossible to remove without wiping the entire device and reinstalling the OS.
Infected smartphones sold all over the globe
Dr.Web says it found the trojan on newly shipped devices from lesser-known brands —mostly based in China— such as Leagoo, Doogee. Vertex, Advan, Cherry Mobile, and others.
"The malware is present in the devices which are sold not only in Russia but globally," a Dr.Web spokesperson told Bleeping Computer earlier today via email. "For instance, in Poland, Indonesia, China, the Checz Republic, Mexico, Kazakhstan, [and] Serbia."
Dr.Web's recent discovery isn't new, but it's a continuation of previous research. Back in July 2017, researchers found the same Triada trojan on four low-cost Android smartphone models —Leagoo M5 Plus, Leagoo M8, Nomu S10, and Nomu S20.
Researchers continued to look into the matter and eventually discovered 42 smartphone models that were coming with malware pre-installed out of the box.
Experts say that their discovery over the summer didn't deter whoever was behind this action to stop. For example, they found Triada pre-installed on Leagoo M9 phones, a model launched in December 2017.

Quote:Security Alert: Attackers Using Brute-Force to Spread Ransomware
How a weak password can damage your entire system
October is known as the Cyber Security Awareness Month. It is an annual campaign that tries to make everyone more conscious about the importance of cyber security in the online landscape.
Almost every day we read and find out about a new type of malware threatening our online security. Cyber criminals are getting more skilled and try advanced techniques to get access to users’ valuable data. It’s no surprise that 2017 is mostly shaped by a record number of ransomware attacks.
Unlike other forms of cyber attacks, ransomware remains one the most profitable malware attack for cybercriminals. A new report called “The Ransomware Economy”, mentioned that, from 2016 to 2017, “there has been a 2,502% increase in the sale of ransomware on the dark web.” Most likely, ransomware attacks will continue to grow and maintain their status as a serious global threat.
Our team has recently seen in the wild how online criminals try alternative ways to spread ransomware and compromise high-value targets. The bad guys now target admin passwords through brute force attacks and dictionary attacks.
What’s new in this type of angle attack is that online criminals hack into unprotected remote desktop protocols and manually execute the ransomware. Moreover, the main purpose is to use different pieces of software and remain unnoticed.
Brute-force attacks (also known as brute force cracking) are trial and error methods used by online criminals to guess users’ personal information such as passwords or PINs. Basically, they try every possible passwords or combinations of letters and numbers until they figure out the correct one.
Dictionary attacks refer to the techniques used to breach an authentication mechanism by systematically using each word in a dictionary (no matter the language) as a password or trying to determine the decryption key of an encrypted document or message.

Quote:Here's a run through and demonstration of all the great new features available in the latest release of NXPowerLite Desktop. We've improved usability, expanded supported file types and upgraded our compression engine.
CUSTOM PROFILES
We’ve made it possible to quickly select custom presets for file compression straight from the home screen. Tailor your saved profile's resolution, quality, application data settings and more for a great productivity boost. We’ve split the settings for each file type into separate tabs allow more granular control.
ADD FOLDERS
Choose which folders and sub folders you’d like to include to be compressed. Then NXPowerLite will pre-scan those directories and let you decide which files you want to be compressed.
OUTPUT QUICK SELECT
It’s now possible to choose your output folder and backup preference from the home screen. Combined with the new ‘Custom Profiles’ and ‘Add folders’ features, we’ve made selecting and compressing files just how you like them easier than ever.
RIGHT-CLICK MENU OPTIONS
Choose from a host of new options when you use the right-click menu in Explorer allowing you to shortcut right to reduction. You can Resize JPEG images, choose to reduce and replace files, zip files or send compressed copies on in just a couple of clicks. The right-click menu is now keyboard accessible too. Use shift & F10 in Explorer to enable the accessibility menu and use the accelerator keys to navigate the NXPowerLite options.
PNG & TIFF SUPPORT
We’ve expanded our supported file types even further, see the full line up:
EXPANDED ZIP
We’ve added the ability to zip your compressed files to the results screen, which was previously only available on right click. Zipping from right-click now also pops up a helpful dialog asking you where you want to save your Zip file and what name to give it.
COLLISION HANDLING
Previously if you optimized a duplicate file, NXPowerLite would add an increment of (1) to the file name. Now you’ll be asked you if you'd like to overwrite, skip or keep both and increment the name.
IGNORE SLIDE MASTERS
You can now choose to ignore PowerPoint Slide masters in your options. This allows you to keep your master images untouched while everything else is reduced.
KEEP ORIGINAL FILE NAMES
When saving to a new folder, you can now keep you original names using this new setting in File Preferences.
POWERPOINT COMPRESSION
Among other tweaks to the way we process PowerPoints, we’ve added the ability to reduce background fill images and improved the compression for files created in Office XML files. Desktop 8 is the most advance PPT compression we’ve ever produced.
ENGINE IMPROVEMENTS
This release has bug fixes and expanded support for Microsoft Office files which has resulted in our ability to get more compression out of more files than ever before. We say this every time, but it really is the best compression we’ve ever seen!
NXPowerLite Desktop 8 for Windows is available now in English language only, but we'll be adding all of these languages before the end of March:
Chinese (simplified), Chinese (traditional), Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese (Brazil), Portuguese (Portugal), Russian, Spanish & Polish.
If you have any questions or want to suggest some improvements for the next version of our Desktop product then get in touch, we're always happy to hear from you.
