Why is it so important to have a good password?
It’s important to have a good password for one very simple reason: it prevents unauthorized access to your physical devices and online accounts. If your password is easy to crack, a cybercriminal may be able to gain access to your bank, social media, email and other private accounts, which could have a devastating effect on your life.

The importance of having robust passwords is particularly pronounced for small businesses. Not only do business owners need to ensure their mission-critical data is safe in order to minimize company downtime, they also need to be doing everything they can to protect their clients’ personal information, which may be stored on the company’s system. Small businesses often find themselves in the hackers’ crosshairs, due to the fact they typically don’t have the resources to support a dedicated IT security team. Cybercriminals are well aware of this – in 2016, about half of all small- and medium-sized businesses in the US experienced a breach, according to figures collated by Keeper Security.

Of course, none of this should come as shocking news. In fact, you’re probably sick and tired of security experts telling you to improve your password hygiene. However, it seems that a pretty big chunk of the population has yet to get the memo, as far too many people are still relying on passwords that are about as secure as a wet paper bag (read: not at all). As SplashData reported, the two most popular (i.e. the worst) passwords of 2017 were, for the fourth year in a row, ‘123456’ and ‘password’. Other notable mentions included ‘qwerty’ (coming in at #4), ‘iloveyou’ (#10) and ‘starwars’ (#16).

What’s new here is that you’ll soon be able to tap a “start” button at the bottom the screen with the details about your transit journey and then get live updates as you walk or ride on your local buses and trains.


Our understanding is that Google Maps will even remind you to get off your bus or train when you get close to your stop. That’s definitely useful when you’re traveling somewhere new (or sleepy).

The notifications on the lock screen are also new. One nifty feature here is that they are interactive, so you can scroll right through your journey’s steps.

While Google Maps always did a good job of giving you detailed transit directions (though it’s often nowhere as good and useful as CityMapper’s more detailed directions), the process generally involved keeping track of your own progress along the route. With this update, transit notifications become a bit more like using Maps for walking, biking and driving.

The confidential source code to Apple's iBoot firmware in iPhones, iPads and other iOS devices has leaked into a public GitHub repo.

The closed-source code is top-secret, proprietary, copyright Apple, and yet has been quietly doing the rounds between security researchers and device jailbreakers on Reddit for four or so months, if not longer. Where exactly it came from, no one is sure for now.

Crucially, within the past day or so, someone decided to dump a copy of this secret sauce on popular developer hangout GitHub for all to find. Links to the files began circulating on Twitter in the past few hours.

The source was swiftly taken down following a DMCA complaint by Apple, which means the code must be legit or else Cupertino would have no grounds to strip it from the website. However, at least one clone of the software blueprints has remerged on GitHub, meaning you can find it if you look hard enough.

It's only natural that cybercriminals would look for ways to take advantage of its popularity. One way they're doing it: by building a fake Reddit site that's so convincing it's tricking users into handing over their usernames and passwords.

That's the landing page you're looking at, as captured by security researcher Alec Muffett. At first glance, there's not much that would tip a visitor off that it's fake. Look closer, however, and the scam becomes clear. The first clue is the site's address. It's not Reddit.com, but rather Reddit.co -- a domain that's supposed to be reserved for sites in Colombia.


The criminals behind this scam are using a technique called typosquatting. They've registered an address that's so close to the real one that most people won't realize they've taken a wrong turn, so to speak. Especially not when they're looking at what appears to be the website they thought they were visiting.

What makes the fake even more convincing is that appears to be secure. Your browser will show the green lock icon to signify that it's safe. If you were to click the icon to see who says it's safe, however, the Reddit.co certificate will say Comodo. Not DigiCert, who issued the real certificate for the real Reddit.

Even if you don't dig that deep, there's another clue that something isn't right here. There's no promoted post at the top of the list and the front page ads don't appear.

Still, these aren't the sort of details anyone who just types Reddit.com into their web browser is likely to notice. Even savvy users have been tricked by scams like this one. If you're worried you may have accidentally wound up on the fake site, click here to go to Reddit and reset your password.

Once you're done, give yourself a typo-proof way to go back to Reddit in the future. Adding it to your favorites/bookmarks (you should be able to press control and D to do that) lets you click through instead of typing.

In December, the local parliament was passed, but it still required approval by the governor appointed by Queen Elizabeth II.
In the referendum held in 2016, the overwhelming majority of votes were opposed to the recognition of homosexual unions as marriages. However, in 2017 the Supreme Court legalized them by considering that the definition of marriage is 'inconsistent with the provisions of the Convention on Human Rights'.

Deputies decided to do so only half a year after recognition of the so-called Same-sex marriages by the Supreme Court there. The new law does not delegate the relationships already contained, but no longer allows them to be included in the future.

Lenovo has recently announced that it’s recalling the ThinkPad X1 Carbon 5th-generation laptop due to an issue impacting the battery and potentially increasing the risk of a fire.

While this is the only model that’s affected by the problem, it looks like it’s all being caused by an unfastened screw that can damage the laptop battery, eventually causing overheating and posing a fire hazard.

Just “a limited number of such laptops” is hit, Lenovo says, though no specifics were provided. The company did say that model numbers 20HQ, 20HR, 20K3, and 20K4 are affected.

78,000 units recalled
To determine whether your own Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon laptop comes with the unfastened screw, what you need to do is to check the product label on the back of the device and look for the “machine type” code.

The product name must be “5th Generation Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon” and the machine type code must be one of those mentioned above. Lenovo says only laptops built between December 2016 and October 2017 are affected, with newer models not impacted. You can also check the manufacturing date on the product label to see if the device is potentially affected, as pictured below.

The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission says approximately 78,000 laptop units are included in the recall, with 5,500 units sold in Canada. The organization also reveals that no injury or overheating reports were sent in the United States.

“Consumers should immediately visit https://support.lenovo.com/X1C_5GEN_RECALL to see if their laptop is included in the recall and for assistance in locating the nearest authorized repair center for inspection and repair. If the laptop is included in the recall, stop using it immediately,” the US CPSC says.

All repairs will be offered free of charge, and Lenovo says that it’s trying to fix the unfastened screw as fast as possible and not cause any inconvenience to its customers.
