O&O Defrag 23: Increased PC speed and Optimize Hard Disks and SSD
If you spend a lot of time on your PC, slow system and program starts or system crashes while playing can be very frustrating. There is nothing worse than when you want to do something on your PC and your computer is running slow. Periodic defragmentation often works wonders in bringing new life to a PC. A disk defragmenter used regularly can speed up a PC of any age and get it working like new again! You will enjoy up to 100% increased PC speed
Don’t let a slow computer spoil your work or fun! Let O&O Defrag optimize your hard disks and New! SSDs and you can experience speed increases of up to 100%! Regular disk defragmentation optimizes your PC performance!
When you defragment, the files that Windows splits up when saving documents across the hard disk or SSD are put back in order again so that files can be quickly recognized and found by the SSD or the read and write heads inside your HDD. Speed increases of up to 100% are not uncommon, and your hardware suffers much less wear and tear!
The new defragmentation method SOLID/COMPLETE: SSDs save file fragments on morememory cells than needed. The resource and hardware friendly SOLID/COMPLETE method defragments these file fragments so that only the number of memory cells required will be used for reading and writing in the future. SOLID/COMPLETE can be used on both SSDs as well as harddisks.
What is O&O Defrag?
Whenever it saves data, Windows scatters file fragments all over the hard disk and this slows down access times considerably. Defragmentation reverses this by rearranging data and speeding up access times dramatically. This not only saves the user time, it also reduces wear on hard disks and extends their life expectancy. Defragmentation can even make the difference if you lose important data because chances of full recovery are better on a defragmented disk.

New SOLID method
By customer request, O&O Software has developed the defragmentation method SOLID in order to offer the user a choice adapted to his or her needs: SOLID/Complete and SOLID/Quick. Both methods sustainably extend the life of the SSD but differ in terms of the duration and protection of the hardware.
O&O DiskCleaner
The brand new in-built O&O DiskCleaner searches for and removes temporary and unnecessary files that are taking up memory and increasing fragmentation. O&O DiskCleaner also increases the security of your data, as private content (e.g. Thumbs.db, copies of documents, drafts of emails, Dumps) will no longer be kept as copies in unnecessary system files.
Benefits of a clearly laid out hard disk
Whenever it saves data, Windows scatters file fragments all over the hard disk and this slows down access times considerably. Defragmentation reverses this by rearranging data and speeding up access times dramatically. This not only saves the user time, it also reduces wear on hard disks and extends their life expectancy. Defragmentation can even make the difference if you lose important data because chances of full recovery are better on a defragmented disk. Why? After defragmentation, it’s easier for data recovery software such as O&O DiskRecovery to restore files when they’re not scattered across multiple areas of a hard disk.
Automatic background defragmentation
Automatic defragmentation can be configured with just three clicks and optimizes your disks behind the scenes with no negative impact on your computer’s performance. You can set O&O Defrag to run defragmentation at a certain level of fragmentation, on particular days of the week, or whenever your screensaver is being used. Defragmentation can be paused and resumed whenever you want because O&O Defrag automatically recognizes where defragmentation was interrupted.
Recommended use
Manual defragmentation is recommended for heavily used PCs. The computer users can decide the best time to give up the performance needed for running defragmentation. On computers using video editing or graphics applications, O&O Defrag can be configured to not start automatic optimization while certain programs are running. The default settings are adequate for ordinary desktop PCs running mainly internet or office applications. O&O Defrag is also perfect for notebooks. Whenever an external power supply is disconnected, O&O Defrag automatically goes into pause mode to save energy

Analyse your drives
By analyzing hard disks, you can get an overview of how files are arranged on a drive, and how heavily fragmented they are. O&O Defrag creates a detailed status report about the fragmentation level once the analysis has been completed:
Select the drive you want to have analyzed from the list of drives.
Start the Analysis using the Ribbon bar or the right-click menu.
Depending on the size of the drive, the analysis can take some time. You can see the analysis being done on the drive icon and in the status display.
When the analysis is complete, you can view the detailed status report as a HTML document in your web browser.
You can analyze several drives simultaneously. Mark the various drives by keeping the Ctrl key pressed while selecting.
File Status View:
Defragmenting your drives
O&O Defrag allows you to defragment individual drives or entire computers with just a few mouse clicks. The first defragmentation usually requires the most time because O&O Defrag has to check your entire system and move all files into their optimal position. We therefore recommend an initial defragmentation with the STEALTH or SPACE methods. Defragment single drives:
Select the drive you wish to defragment from the drive list.
Clicking the Start button in the Ribbon Bar will start defragmentation using the OPTIMIZE default method. If you want to change this method, open the Start button’s lower menu and select the method you desire.
Depending on the size of your database, defragmentation can take up to several hours. You can see the defragmentation in progress on the drive symbol and the status display.
Defragmentation methods:
STEALTH
SPACE
SOLID/Complete
SOLID/Quick
COMPLETE/Access
COMPLETE/Modified
COMPLETE/Name
Once defragmentation is completed, you can have a detailed status report displayed as an HTML document in your web browser!
Zone Filling:
The system drive is divided into 3 zones by default. Zone 1 includes windows system files and installed applications. Zone 2 includes user data, e.g. Office documents, temporary files, user profile. Zone 3 includes seldom used data and very large files, e.g. Windows Recycle Bin and files over 500 MB
The zone filing tool proposed by O&O Defrag is optimal for the majority of users. To enable zone filing, select File into zones in the drop down menu in the tab O&O Defrag under Settings in the ribbon bar. Zone filing is not recommended for SSDs. You can customize the default configuration according to your wishes. You can create new settings for individual drives or drive groups. You can also define your own rules for zone filing.
O&O DiskCleaner
O&O Defrag has a built-in tool (O&O DiskCleaner) that searches for and removes temporary and unnecessary files that consume space and increase fragmentation. O&O DiskCleaner wins back otherwise used space
O&O Disk Cleaner is present as a Ribbon-entry under specific button. You now have the opportunity to select Analysis or Cleanup. The analyse feature analyzes the database and provides you with an overview of temporary and unneeded files. For example; in temporary files, thumbnails and cache of windows Indexing Service; there may be residues of highly personal data. You cannot overlook where remains of Word documents or photos are found.
You can easily optimize the database of drives and decide which files to delete with just one click.
Check drive:
In the Ribbon bar under Check drive, you have the possibility to check the drive for errors.
O&O ClusterInspector:
A cluster is the smallest allocation unit that is used by the operating system to store files. The program has a built-in tool that helps to view clusters and to check how the hard disk is being used. It is located under extras button. It shows you the files located on a specific block.
Determine file position
This tool lets you easily find out where and how a certain file is located. All areas occupied by this file will then be displayed by the ClusterView.
TRIM of SSD:
Through this command the SSD is told about unused space in a file system and this free space may be then used to assist wear leveling. The major drawback of SSD is a limited lifetime due to physical degradation of flash memory cells with each write request. The controlling processor inside an SSD must perform wear leveling by distributing recurrent writes to many flash cells to keep working perfect for long time. This function can be facilitated by the TRIM command. If used in a clever way, TRIM will extend the lifetime of a solid state drive and will improve its performance.
Create Job:
If you want to have the maximum performance from your computer, you need to do defragmentation on a regular basis. Of course this will be time consuming and better to be done in an automatic way. The built in scheduling feature is the best choice that will help you. Simply, click schedule and create new job. You can create, edit and delete jobs according to your wish. You can enter the name of your job. There are many features of the new job that you need to specify. These include schedule pattern, files, drive, activitymonitor, settings, pre-job execution and post-job execution
Reports:
You can easily create a report of your system using create located under schedule button
