Creating a backup routine before you ever experience a serious crash and data loss is a smart move. Think of the files and items you would not want to lose if your PC ever broke beyond repair. Go through everything you have stored on your hard drive and select the folders you would like to back up. Then open BitReplica and start backing up those important items.

The program pre-fills the list with the most common items that most users may want to back up, such as emails, pictures, videos and music stored in standard Windows locations - you can simply check the ones you want backed up. Multiple backup profiles
When you use your computer for multiple purposes, such as for work-related tasks and personal activities, you may like to keep these areas in separate backups. Some of these files you may want to back up on an hourly basis (such as when you are working on an important project all day and don`t want to lose any edits if something ever goes wrong), while other files that don`t change much may have to be backed up once a week or even manually, after edits have been made. BitReplica offers this flexibility by letting you create multiple profiles, each with its own rules and schedule.

For each profile you create, you will be able to choose the items you want backed up, the destination to save the backup to, set the rules (such as whether previous file copies should be overwritten), set a schedule for automatic backups or choose manual launching, configure some advanced settings if you like, and finally name the profile so that you can recognize it in the list later.



Backup scheduling
While you can set backup profiles to be launched manually whenever you feel it necessary, most of us are too busy to remember such tasks. There is a good chance disaster may strike that one time you forget to back up. In addition to manual launching, BitReplica lets you schedule backups to run automatically, so you can breathe easy knowing your important files will be securely copied and stored.

When creating a profile, you will be able to set an hourly (run every X hours), daily (every day at X time) or weekly (every week on X day at X time) schedule.

A Windows service is a long-running program that performs specific functions and which is designed not to require user intervention. Usually, Windows services start when the Microsoft Windows operating system is booted and run in the background as long as Windows is running.

Once a service is installed, it can be managed by launching Services from the Windows Control Panel ⇒ Administrative Tools or typing Services.msc in the Run command on Start menu. Note that disabling services is dangerous and can reduce the functionality of your computer.



Full, incremental, and differential backups

BitReplica is equipped with advanced algorithms for customizing backups to your specific needs. Full backup allows you to copy everything you specify without checking if the items have been backed up before. However, if you want to save disk space and only have the latest copy of your files backed up, the program offers several alternative options. Incremental backup copies only the files that have been modified or created since the last backup. Differential backup creates copies of files that have changed since the last FULL backup. This way you can simply keep your backup copies updated to the latest version without copying the files that are still the same.



Store your backups in the cloud

Besides saving your backups to an external drive or a networked computer, BitReplica lets you safely store your backed up data in the cloud using one of several supported online storage service providers: BoxNet, DropBox, Google Drive, CloudMe, SafeSync, 4Sync or Cubby. All you have to do is sign up for an online storage account with a service you like, create a local sync folder for this service on your computer and set BitReplica to save your backups to that folder. Having your backups saved to the cloud gives you the added assurance that nothing bad will happen to your important files, plus offers the convenience of having access to your files from any other computer you may be using. Incremental Backup is the type of profile used for backing up data to cloud storage.



Advanced backup options
When creating backups with BitReplica, you have a multitude of customization options, including some advanced ones that you won’t find in every backup tool. You can specify file types or files by their attributes to be excluded from backups, such as temporary or system files, which helps save on storage space and time. You can also check whether files saved in a backup have been modified since the backup was last run. This prevents errors when running subsequent backups and ensures files are synchronized according to backup profile settings.

Another advanced option is to set some specific program to run right before or right after backup. For instance, if you want to avoid backing up junk files, you can launch a disk cleanup tool prior to backup, etc. Enjoy greater control of how you protect your data with these special features.



Extended restore options

Backups are great for ensuring that none of your important files ever get lost. With BitReplica, restoring files can be as easy as a simple click on the Restore link in the list of backups. But what if you only need one file from a backup or a certain file category? BitReplica offers extended restore options that let you explore the backup like you would any other folder, and choose files or subfolders you want to restore. You can also specify whether you want files to be overwritten with newer versions or any versions, and set some other rules for restoring.




Back up from any storage media
Although most common backups are performed from a hard drive to an external storage drive, BitReplica also allows you to back up data from any storage device, including HDD’s, SSD’s, SD cards, USB flash drives, and networked drives. Any location you can see in Windows Explorer can be the source for a backup, and can be specified as such when creating a backup profile in BitReplica.

This can be useful in many situations. For instance, when copying hundreds of vacation photos from your camera you may want to have them split into bundles the size of a standard CD, so that later they can be saved onto several CD’s. It could be too complicated and time-consuming to do manually, but with BitReplica it becomes an easy job. You just specify the SD card in your camera (connected to your PC, of course) as the source location, and choose to zip and split the archive in the How section of the Profile Wizard by choosing the Compression Settings tab (see Multi-Volume Archiving for more details).
