Ed Snowden himself claimed the app was siphoning data, but it wasn’t until news hit that international intelligence agencies were using it to collect information that people really took notice.

A mobile ad platform placed a code snippet in Angry Birds that allowed the company to target advertisements to users based on previously collected information. Unfortunately, the ad’s library of data was visible, meaning it was leaking user information such as phone number, call logs, location, political affiliation, sexual orientation, and marital status. No wonder the NSA was all over it.

If you believe the developers, it seems that newer versions of Angry Birds aren’t quite as vulnerable as their forefathers, so if you must shoot pigs with chickens, make sure you update the app.

2. The YouVersion Bible App

Quote:A second Steam Windows client zero-day privilege escalation vulnerability affecting over 96 million users has been publicly disclosed today by Russian researcher Vasily Kravets.

This happens after Valve disputed the significance of the previous Steam 0day disclosed by Kravets on Twitter and banned him out of their HackerOne bug bounty program.

Seeing that this vulnerability impacts only the Steam Windows client, with Steam having over 100 million registered users and 96.28% of them are running Windows according to the Steam Hardware & Software Survey: July 2019, the systems of roughly 96 millions of them are currently affected. 


The privilege escalation (also known as an elevation of privilege or local privilege escalation) security flaw disclosed today by Kravets can allow attackers with limited rights to use a technique known as BaitAndSwitch to run executables using the Steam Client Service's  NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM elevated permissions.

This would allow potential attackers to launch a three-stage attack, getting remote code execution privileges by exploiting a vulnerability in a Steam game, a Windows app, or the OS itself, subsequently elevating privileges on the compromised device and running a malicious payload using SYSTEM permissions.

As Kravets detailed in his write-up, "achieving maximum privileges can lead to much more disastrous consequences. For example, disabling firewall and antivirus, rootkit installation, concealing of process-miner, theft any PC user’s private data — is just a small portion of what could be done."

Worm-Cryptominer Combo Lets You Game While Using NSA Exploits to Move Laterally
August 20, 20192 Min Read     Bitdefender researchers recently found and analyzed a worm-cryptominer combo that uses a series of exploits to move laterally and compromise victims. What makes it interest is that it pauses the resource-intensive cryptomining process if it finds popular games running on the victim’s machine. The investigation revealed that the worm-cryptominer has been constantly updated by its developers. Some of its modules were updated to make it difficult for security researchers to analyze it, as well as improve lateral movement and other capabilities.

Dubbed Beapy/PCASTLE by previous security researchers, Bitdefender takes a deeper dive into the behavior of the worm-cryptominer combo, offering a detailed changelog into how its modules and components have been updated over time. The Bitdefender investigation reveals how the worm and malware components have been used in conjunction to spread and mine cryptocurrency.

A new attack vector, not previously associated with delivering cryptocurrency miners or covered in past research, was also revealed during the investigation. A supply chain attack broke out against users of DriveTheLife, a potentially unwanted application (PUA), and against users of other similar apps that seem to run on the same infrastructure. It was found that a component of DriveTheLife that normally downloads and executes files from a legitimate domain, was apparently being manipulated and used to download a malicious payload on the victim’s machine from a domain operated by attackers.

August 22, 2019 12:53 AM      A vulnerability in the free version of Bitdefender Antivirus could be exploited by an attacker to get SYSTEM-level permissions, reserved for the most privileged account on a Windows machine.

Privilege escalation vulnerabilities are used in a later stage of an attack, after the threat actor already compromised the target host and needs elevated permissions to establish persistence or execute code with the privileges of the most powerful user.

Looking for missing DLL
Identified as CVE-2019-15295, the vulnerability is owed to lack of verification that loaded binaries are signed and come from a trusted location.

Peleg Hadar of SafeBreach Labs says that Bitdefender's security service (vsserv.exe) and the updater service (updatesrv.exe) started as signed processes with SYSTEM authority.

However, they tried to load a missing DLL file ('RestartWatchDog.dll') from various locations in the PATH environment variable.   One of the locations is 'c:/python27,' which comes with an access control list (ACL) open to any authenticated user. This makes privilege escalation trivial because a user to normal permissions could write the missing DLL and have it loaded by Bitdefender's signed processes.

Hadar tested the theory with an unsigned DLL that wrote to a text file the name of the process loading it, the name of the user executing it, and the name of the DLL file.

His assumption was confirmed, and his 'RestartWatchDog.dll' file was loaded without a hitch.      The root of the issue is the ServiceInstance.dll library that attempts to load the missing DLL.

SafeBreach disclosed the vulnerability responsibly to Bitdefender on July 17 and on August 14 received validation from the antivirus maker.

On Monday, Bitdefender rolled out a patch for its Antivirus Free 2020 product. Users with an internet connection received the update automatically.

"An Untrusted Search Path vulnerability in the ServiceInstance.dll library versions 1.0.15.119 and lower, as used in Bitdefender Antivirus Free 2020 versions prior to 1.0.15.138, allows an attacker to load an arbitrary DLL file from the search path." reads Bitdefender's advisory
