October 9, 2018 03:01 AM     In Windows 10, Microsoft added a new ransomware protection feature called Controlled Folder Access that can be used to prevent modifications to files in protected folders by unknown programs. 

At the DerbyCon security conference last week, a security researcher showed how DLL injection can be used by ransomware to bypass the Controlled Folder Access ransomware protection feature.

Controlled Folder Access is a feature that allows you to protect folders and the files inside them so that they can only be modified by an application that is whitelisted. The whitelisted applications are either ones that you specify or ones that are whitelisted by default by Microsoft.

Knowing that the explorer.exe program is whitelisted in Controlled Folder Access, Soya Aoyama, a security researcher at Fujitsu System Integration Laboratories Ltd., figured out a way to inject a malicious DLL into Explorer when it is started. Since Explorer is whitelisted, when the DLL is injected it will launch and be able to bypass the ransomware protection feature.

To do this, Aoyama relied on the fact that when explorer.exe starts, it will load DLLs found under the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers registry key shown below.

The HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT tree is a merge of registry information found in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and HKEY_CURRENT_USER. When performing the merge, Windows gives the data in the HKCU tree precedence.

This means that if a key exists in HKCU, it would take precedence over the same key in HKLM, and be the data merged into the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT tree. I know this can be a bit confusing, so you can read this document for more information. 

By default, when explorer starts it loads Shell32.dll from the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{90AA3A4E-1CBA-4233-B8BB-535773D48449}\InProcServer32 key. To load the malicious DLL into explorer.exe instead, Aoyama simply created a HKCU\Software\Classes\CLSID\{90AA3A4E-1CBA-4233-B8BB-535773D48449}\InProcServer32 key and set its default value to the malicious DLL. 

Now when Explorer.exe is killed and restarted, the malicious DLL will be launched inside explorer.exe rather than Shell32.dll.  You can see an example of the DLL injected into explorer.exe below.

Unfortunately, not only did this bypass the Controlled Folder Access, but it also was not detected by Windows Defender. To be fair, according to Aoyama's tests, it was not detected by Avast, ESET, Malwarebytes Premium, and McAfee - all of which have ransomware protection.

MSRC responds to vulnerability report
Aoyama has stated that before he gave this presentation he had responsibly disclosed this vulnerability to the Microsoft Security Response Center and included a proof-of-concept that could be used to bypass Controlled Folder Access.



Microsoft, though, did not feel that this was a vulnerability that warranted a bounty or that requires a patch.

"If I am interpreting your findings correctly, this report predicated on the attacker having login access to the target's account already," stated Microsoft's response to Aoyama. "Followed by planting a DLL through registry modifications. Since you are only able to write to the HKCU, you will not be able to effect other users, just the target you have already compromised through other means. There also does not appear to be an escalation privileges and you already had the same access level as the target."



Unfortunately a ransomware does not need an escalation of privileges to encrypt a victim's computer. Yes, it needs it for the clearing of shadow volume copies, but a malware developer can use other exploits or methods to execute vssadmin.

What this does allow, is for malware to be installed without administrative privileges and still be able to bypass the ransomware protection of Controlled Folder Access. This does not sound like a good thing.

Some nice momentum for privacy-focused search engine DuckDuckGo which has just announced it’s hit 30 million daily searches a year after reaching 20M — a year-on-year increase of 50%.

Hitting the first 10M daily searches took the search engine a full seven years, and then it was another two to get to 20M. So as growth curves go it must have required patience and a little faith in the run up.

A strength of conviction that’s paying off now, though, as usage continues to take off…

Albeit 30M daily searches is still a drop in the ocean vs the at least 3BN+ daily searches that Google handles daily (at least because that metric dates back to 2015).

DDG’s search engine offers a pro-privacy alternative to Google search that does not track and profile users in order to target them with ads.

Instead it displays ads based on the keyword being searched for at the point of each search — dispensing with the need to follow people around the web, harvesting data on everything they do to feed a sophisticated adtech business, as Google does.

DDG says it has been profitable using its non-tracking business model since 2014, also making money from affiliate revenue.

It does not break out active user metrics but earlier this year cited third party estimates which peg its user-base at around 25M.

This year it expanded from its core search product to launch a tracker blocker to address wider privacy concerns consumers have by helping web users keep more of their online activity away from companies trying to spy on them for profit.

It also recently emerged that DDG had quietly picked up $10M in VC funding, which is only its second tranche of external investment.

The company told us this financing would be used to respond to an expanding opportunity for pro-privacy business models, including by tuning its search engine for more local markets and expanding its marketing channels to “have more of a global focus”.

Privacy regulations such as Europe’s General Data Protection Act are likely also helping to put wind in DDG’s sails.

While, in the US, lawmakers are also eyeing drafting federal privacy regulations — which could result in new domestic controls on how companies are able to process people’s information.

Not tracking people in the first place positions DDG’s business to be able to keep on flying regardless of tighter rules incoming.

Oct 8, 2018 Elley    Security researchers have found that there are 11 years of unpatched security vulnerabilities in the counting machines used in 23 states, making the counting machines vulnerable to hackers.

The M650 high-speed ballot scanner is manufactured by Election Systems & Software (ES&S), the leading electoral equipment supplier in the United States. A technical report pointed out that the vulnerability is the most serious vulnerability in voting equipment.

When talking about the M650, Jake Braun, one of the cybersecurity experts and organizers at the University of Chicago, said: “If someone exploits a vulnerability to crack a password and tries to adjust the number of votes, it may change the count of the entire county/state vote. The opinion of another organizer and researcher is that an infected disk can take over the entire electoral system.

Broun said that ES&S continues to support and serve the M650, which reflects the current state of the national voting equipment industry that many problematic ticket holders are still on the job.

Cybersecurity experts have long been concerned that the country’s outdated electoral infrastructure is vulnerable to attack, and this is an important factor in Russia’s ability to influence elections in 2016.

A report from the National Academy of Sciences in September urged that the electoral facilities need to implement the necessary reforms by 2020, including ongoing federal funding, because the elections are governed by states and related security measures are slow to change. Other recommendations include the lack of “human-readable” paper records for retired electronic machines and the need for reliable post-election review. The Republican Party’s leadership in Congress has recently hampered the process of adopting electoral reform legislation.

The researchers’ safety testing process was also in a slump, they received more than 30 voting devices and other machines for security testing, but they could test very limited content because the vendor refused to provide proprietary equipment. Policymakers at the National Security Agency and the Department of Homeland Security believe that the best way to ensure that equipment is elected is to have no hostile technicians attack it, but ES&S has rejected the proposal, and the current environmental exposure-specific technology will instead allow the election to be elected.   + When playing archive files (zip/rar), the archive is now extracted to
    the windows temp folder instead of 'my documents'.

  + Meta-data returned when playing streaming audio is now trimmed to remove
    superfluous spaces before/after the returned text.

  - A race condition caused the scrape manager thread not to signal it is
    terminating correctly, causing Zoom Player to freeze on exit.

  - The media library playlist plugin now supports playlist URLs longer than
    255 characters long.

  - RSS feeds containing a special unicode line-break character in the
    description would trigger a freeze when opening the RSS media library
    category a second time.

  - Enabling the "Share Play History at a custom path" setting and not
    specifying a trailing "\" in the folder name would cause the play
    history to be saved incorrectly.

  - The "Continue to the next Playlist item when an invalid file is played"
    setting would skip tracks if the unplayable media was the last playlist
    entry.
    
  - Opening a playlist from the file-open dialog would not always preserve
    the active playlist entry as specified in the playlist file.

  - Some unicode characters did not show up correctly in the playlist editor
    and music OSD if the selected font did not support the characters.
    Now a different windows text-rendering function is used, one that takes
    unsupported character from a system-default font.

  - When including an executable entry in the playlist, playback did not
    progress to the next track correctly and would cause the wrong title
    to appear in the playlist editor.

  - Playing an audio file with visualization could cause the right click menu
    to show multiple "close navigator" entries when right-clicking on a
    fullscreen navigation interface.

  - The SHOUTcast station browser would show duplicate entries after opening
    the dialog multiple times on different days.

  - When playing SHOUTcast/ICEcast streams, playing the next track would
    cause the previously playing title to overwrite the new track's title
    in the playlist editor.

  - Opening a streaming URL from clipboard (Alt+Ctrl+"U") failed to work if
    the URL was a playlist.

  - Pressing the "Play (add to playlist)" button while a navigation interface
    was visible and the "Stop closes the navigation interfaces" setting was
    enabled prevented playback of the station from starting.

  - Parsing ".CUE" files failed when the an entry contained the word "TRACK"
    in either the performer or title tags.
