Two malware families battling for turf are most likely the cause of an outage suffered by Californian ISP Sierra Tel at the beginning of the month.

This outage took place on April 10, 2017, when Sierra Tel customers started complaining about losing Internet and telephone connectivity.

While initially there were unconfirmed rumors that the company had botched a firmware update, in a statement released the following day, on April 11, Sierra Tel admitted it was the victim of a "malicious hacking event."

"Hacking event" affected only Zyxel HN-51 modems
The company said someone targeted and hacked Zyxel modems model HN-51, all of which couldn't connect to its network anymore.

As the number of complaining users kept growing, Sierra Tel representatives asked customers to drop their Zyxel modems at their offices, where they could get a replacement.

The company underestimated the size of the incident, and after a few hours, it ran out of replacement modems, while customers formed long lines outside their offices.

Subsequent clients who came to receive replacements were asked to leave their devices at the company's offices, promising that staff would repair the modem, and give them a call when it would be ready.

On Saturday, April 22, almost two weeks later, Sierra Tell representatives announced they finally managed to finish repairing all the affected modems.

"The Sierra Tel family is pleased to report that we have nearly completed our response to the highly disruptive impacts of the illegal hacking of the HN-51 modem," the company wrote on Facebook.

BrickerBot was active on Sierra Tel's network
The outage was only reported by the local press and got little attention from national media, as it only affected Sierra Tel customers in the cities of Mariposa and Oakhurst, California.

The incident was brought to Bleeping Computer's attention by Janit0r, a man who claims to have developed BrickerBot, an IoT malware family that bricks unsecured IoT devices.

"BrickerBot was active on the Sierra Tel network at the time their customers reported issues," Janit0r told Bleeping Computer in an email, "but their modems had also just been mass-infected with malware, so it's possible some of the network problems were caused by this concomitant activity."

Janit0r suggested the other culprit was Mirai, a malware also known to cause similar issues. Last year, a hacker known as Popopret deployed a defective Mirai version that caused over 900,000 modems belonging to Deutsche Telekom to go offline for nearly a day, before the German ISP retook control over its devices via a firmware update. A week later, several British ISPs suffered the same fate.

While it is impossible to say what caused the Sierra Tel modems to go offline, all clues line up with BrickerBot entering "Plan B," the sequence Janit0r says is responsible with bricking devices.

In a previous interview with Bleeping Computer, Janit0r said that BrickerBot is not intentionally configured to destroy devices. The malware will first try to secure the device, but if it fails or the device cannot be secured, it will wipe its flash storage and rewrite with random data. These actions render targeted devices useless, needing repair or replacement, the exact same actions Sierra Tel took.

Janit0r also said he developed BrickerBot to go after the same devices targeted by other IoT malware families, which makes pinpointing the source of Sierra Tel's outage even harder.

It's quite possible that Sierra Tel's Zyxel modems went offline as the result of a secret turf war waged among various families of IoT malware, such as Mirai, BrickerBot, Hajime, Wifatch, Gafgyt, Imeij, and others. As more and more IoT malware families emerge, they will eventually cause more problems like the Sierra Tel incident.

"I'm worried that Sierra is unfairly getting some bad PR for being honest about the hack rather than covering it up," Janit0r wrote in another email. "I think Sierra did the right thing by being transparent to its customers. [...]  I've seen other ISPs covering up such problems as 'bad firmware upgrades' or 'temporary connectivity issues'."

Nevertheless, Janit0r is not willing to give Sierra Tel too many praises.

"Sierra Tel should've locked down their network better, to begin with," Janit0r also added. "Having control interfaces filtered from the WAN [Internet] is critically important for any ISP deployment."

The "control interface" Janit0r is referring to is most likely TR-069, known to have security issues, and which Mirai has exploited in the past. In fact, this is the same control interface that Mirai exploited in the aforementioned incidents that took place in Germany and the UK, last year, and which also involved Zyxel modems.

Sierra Tel has not responded to numerous requests for comment from Bleeping Computer, but said on Facebook that is working with law enforcement to track down and catch the culprit of "this illegal and malicious hacking of the ZyXel HN51 modems."

Over the weekend, Radware, the cyber-security firm who first spotted BrickerBot issued another report unveiling two newer versions of the BrickerBot malware, with different bricking techniques compared to the first samples they discovered. The company also has a series of recommandations for keeping IoT devices safe from BrickerBot and other IoT malware.

Dozens of infected apps went under Google's radar

About 600,000 Android users have mistakenly installed malware on their devices straight from Google Play, the company's official app store. 

According to cybersecurity researchers from Check Point, the malware was hidden in more than 40 fake companion guide apps for popular games, such as Pokemon GO and FIFA Mobile, which led to the malware's name being FalseGuide.

While originally it was believed the oldest fake guide to hit Google Play was uploaded in February this year, making this a recent campaign, the researchers went a little deeper and discovered additional apps from back in November 2016.

FalseGuide was believed to have infected north of 600,000 users, but the number now sits at 2 million Android users, all of whom have mistakenly downloaded and installed malware on their devices while seeking guides for their favorite games.

After infection, FalseGuide creates a silent botnet out of the infected devices for adware purposes.

"FalseGuide requests an unusual permission on installation – device admin permission. The malware uses the admin permission to avoid being deleted by the user, an action which normally suggests a malicious intention. The malware then registers itself to a Firebase Cloud Messaging topic which has the same name as the app. Once subscribed to the topic, FalseGuide can receive messages containing links to additional modules and download them to the infected device," the report shows.

A complicated campaign
After some investigation, the company figured out the botnet was being used to display illegitimate pop-up ads out of context, using a background service that starts running once the device is booted. "Depending on the attackers' objectives, these modules can contain highly malicious code intended to root the device, conduct a DDoS attack, or even penetrate private networks."

The apps were posing as guides for FIFA Mobile, Lego Nexo Knights, Lego City My City, Rolling Sky, Terraria, World of Tanks, Drift Zone 2, Mobile Legends, Criminal Case, Subway Surfers, Pokemon Go, Dream League Soccer, Super Mario, Amaz3ing Spider Man, Ninjago Tournament, and so on.

Mobile botnets have been growing in popularity since early last year, the researchers note. This type of malware manages to infiltrate Google Play due to the non-malicious nature of the first component, which only downloads the actual harmful code.

The FalseGuide apps have been removed from the app store.

Roman Seleznev infected PoS systems, causing nearly $170M in damage to 500 small businesses and 3,700 institutions

Roman Seleznev, the man that caused more than $169 million in damage after running a PoS hacking scheme, was sentenced to 27 years in prison, which is the longest punishment for a hacker thus far. 

The Russian hacker ran his scheme between October 2009 and October 2013. During this time, he installed malware on point-of-sale systems (PoS), which then stole payment card details from buyers. The data was later sold on the dark web to the highest bidder.

In total, about 500 American businesses were affected, as well as 3,700 financial institutions. The data collected by the infected PoS was sent to servers Seleznev controlled in Russia, Ukraine, and Virginia.

The hacker was caught back in the summer of 2014 when he was on holiday in the Maldives. His laptop, which was seized upon his arrest, held more than 1.7 million stolen credit card details, as well as plenty of other evidence linking him to the servers, and the financial transactions he made selling the data.

"Simply put, Roman Seleznev has harmed more victims and caused more financial loss than perhaps any other defendant that has appeared before the court. This prosecution is unprecedented," the prosecutors said.

Getting away easy
Seleznev could have received a life sentence due to the scale of his crimes, but he must have been lucky. On the other hand, the apology letter he wrote to the court admitting his guilt must have helped a tiny bit.

In it, he describes his life story, how he picked up hacking and believed the community was a place he belonged to. "My mom would never be proud of me for this life," he adds for dramatic effect, although we're sure he's right.

Even so, 27 years is a lot for a hacker. "This investigation, conviction, and sentence demonstrate that the United States will bring the full force of the American justice system upon cybercriminals like Seleznev who victimize US citizens and companies from afar. And we will not tolerate the existence of safe havens for these crimes - we will identify cybercriminals from the dark corners of the Internet and bring them to justice," said Kenneth Blanco, Acting Assistant Attorney General, as a warning to other hackers out there.

Seleznev was found guilty in August 2016 on ten counts of wire fraud, eight counts of intentional damage to a protected computer, nine counts of obtaining information from a protected computer, nine counts of possession of 15 or more unauthorized access devices and two counts of aggravated identity theft.

Aside from this sentence, he still faces charges in other federal courts in Nevada and Georgia for similar crimes.

Nearly 9 in 10 enterprises to begin the transition this year

Microsoft has been pushing hard for consumers to upgrade from Windows 7 and 8.1 to Windows 10, and after the free upgrade promo has ended, all eyes are now on enterprises, who are also projected to begin the transition to the latest OS these days.

And according to a research conducted by analyst firm Gartner, no less than 85 percent of enterprises plan to start deployment of Windows 10 by the end of the year.

The research involved more than 1,000 decision-makers in six countries like the United States, the UK, France, China, India, and Brazil, and was conducted before September and December last year.

“Organizations recognize the need to move to Windows 10, and the total time to both evaluate and deploy Windows 10 has shortened from 23 months to 21 months between surveys that Gartner did during 2015 and 2016,” said Ranjit Atwal, research director at Gartner.

“Large businesses are either already engaged in Windows 10 upgrades or have delayed upgrading until 2018. This likely reflects the transition of legacy applications to Windows 10 or replacing those legacy applications before Windows 10 migration takes place.”

Security for the win
As far as the reasons for moving to Windows 10 are concerned, nearly half of the respondents (49 percent) pointed to the security of the new operating system as the main improvement driving the migration to the operating system, while cloud integration was the runner-up.

Enterprises typically wait for one or two major OS releases before beginning the deployment of a new operating system, and with the Creators Update now up for grabs, the upgrade pace is projected to accelerate towards the summer.

Furthermore, Microsoft is also projected to release the new Windows 10 Redstone 3 in September, so enterprises completing the upgrade after the fall will receive another significant upgrade for the operating system before deployment is complete.

In today's Photoshop tutorial I'm going to show you a mix of filters and adjustments we can apply to a photograph to mimic the retro style airbrushed painted look associated with classic film posters. Imagine the poster art for original Star Wars trilogy, the Indiana Jones movies, and pretty much any action/adventure film from the 80s! They all feature incredibly life-like depictions of the the actors and characters, which are almost like photos, but they have a clear hand painted appearance with subtle brush strokes, outlining marks and quite high contrast with vibrant colours.
