Mp3tag v2.87 released
I’ve just released Mp3tag v2.87
Spring is slowly arriving here in Germany and releasing this version feels like spring-cleaning to me. I’ve made so many improvements to Mp3tag’s code base over the last two months and also fixed a bunch of long-lasting issues with this release. I surely felt this way before, but this time, I think, it’s the most stable version of Mp3tag ever released! — We'll see ?
I’ve also rebooted the Mp3tag Community and migrated all the posts from the old forums to the new Discourse-based community forums. It took me around 2 weeks to develop the migration scripts and to perform the move and I think it was worth the effort.
I like our new place. It feels good to answer questions over there and to know, that many others can benefit from the answers given. Most of the changes and fixes which made it to this release, are driven and inspired by discussions on the forums.
I’ve also reworked my privacy policy which is basically still: I don’t collect Mp3tag usage information and I don’t track any of your activities. I haven’t changed my practice there, but in light of the recent developments around data leaks and data-harvesting nightmares, I wanted to make this a little bit more explicit.
Speaking of which: I’ve also said goodbye to Mp3tag’s +5k fans on facebook. Closing my account there was long overdue and it feels good to not make this platform more interesting with my presence. If you’ve found your way to this newsletter via Mp3tag’s (now deleted) facebook page, I send you an extra welcome ?
So, enough of the house-keeping (note, how I’m still in spring-cleaning mode).
The most notable changes in Mp3tag v2.87 are
MusicBrainz v2 The MusicBrainz v1 web service will be closed in a few months. I've added a new official MusicBrainz Tag Source based on v2 of their web service with this release.
Option to disable auto-filtering The filter helper menu now has an option to enable/disable auto-applying the filter. This can be helpful if you're working with large libraries and find the auto-filtering to disturb your workflow.
LAME encoder detection I've rewritten the code to analyze MP3s with this version (it was sooooo old) and added detection of LAME encoder versions while I was at it. You can access it via the %_tool% information field, if this is something of interest to you.
Mapping of Matroska tag fields I've reworked the tag fields mapping for Matroska and documented the process at the overview page for Tag field mappings. If you're tagging Matroska files, this is for you.
