Most of the modern indie games are made using game engines like GameMaker, Unity, Multimedia Fusion etc. While it allows faster game development it hits the game performance. That's why there are higher hardware requirements. By the way Caveblazers looks like a really fun and contents-rich game and the nice pixel art makes it somehow stand out.
