Hacking like in the movies! Sometimes it's that easy

If you ever want to impress your friends and hack doors with one command and a push of a button, like in those cheesy and unrealistic Hollywood movies, then choosing an HID door controller for your demonstration is the sure way to get a jaw-dropping reaction.

The reason is that Trend Micro researchers have discovered a severe vulnerability in HID door controllers that allows you to send one malicious UDP request to a door and automatically unlock it and/or deactivate the alarm if the door has that feature enabled.

HID is a company that manufactures, among other things, door controllers. These are those black boxes that you can see next to securitized doors where someone comes in, swipes their card, an LED turns green, and the door automatically opens for them to enter.

Attackers can exploit flaw via the local network

In some newer variants, these door controllers can also be connected to the local network and allow system administrators to manage the devices from their local command center.

Trend Micro's Ricky "HeadlessZeke" Lawshae discovered that two of these door controllers, VertX and Edge, the company's flagship products, have a design vulnerability in their management protocol that allows someone to run remote commands on the device, all with root privileges.

According to the researcher, these two devices are running a special daemon called discoveryd, which answers to UDP network packets on port 4070 with information on the device, like its lock state, alarm state, firmware version, device type, MAC address, and a generic name (like "Door for East Corridor").

Besides reporting on the device's status, this service also includes a debugging function that allows a remote admin to tell the device to blink its LED for a number of times.

Improper input filtering allows hackers to send commands with debugging code

This operation takes place when the IT manager sends a "command_blink_on" command with the door's ID. Mr. Lawshae says that by placing Linux command after the ID, wrapped in backticks, like `command`, due to improper input sanitization, the command will execute on the device.

Since this LED function is fed to the system() call, which then runs as root, an attacker can instruct the device to do whatever they wish, all via one single UDP packet.

Additionally, leaving out the ID, the attacker can control all doors inside a building at the same time. If this operation is automated in a network flood-like action, the doors will stay open or closed until the UDP packet spam ends, and only then the IT administrators will be able to open or close the door controllers.

If you deploy such controllers on your network, it may be a good time to visit the HID website and download the latest firmware versions, where this vulnerability was patched.

“Couldn’t download video. Try turning off Wi-Fi”

Apple rolled out iOS 9.3.1 update to correct the link issue causing apps to crash on iPhones running version 9.3, but it appears that, in its turn, this new release is leading to some other problems.

iOS devices updated to 9.3.1 can no longer send and receive videos on WhatsApp, the popular instant messaging app that’s running on millions of phones out there. The issue only appears to be experienced when sharing videos between iPhones, so if you’re trying to send a video from your iPhone to another, the chances are that the receiver won’t be able to download it.

The error message that shows up when tapping the video received in a conversation reads, “Couldn’t download video. Try turning off Wi-Fi or VPN, or connecting to a different Wi-Fi network.”

Turning off Wi-Fi or switching to either 3G or 4G makes absolutely no difference, and the same error is experienced. A VPN connection wasn’t active when getting this error, and connecting to a different Wi-Fi network doesn’t correct the problem either.

Video sharing working fine with Android

We’ve tested video sharing between iPhone and Android devices, and file transfers and downloading seem to be working just fine, so it’s very clear that this is only a problem impacting Apple’s models.

This isn’t the only hitch that iOS users have experienced with WhatsApp since the arrival of iOS 9.3. There were reports that some users were unable to share photos on WhatsApp, no matter the number of files and no matter the connection. When choosing contacts to share photos, the app failed to start the transfer process completely.

An update that WhatsApp released earlier this week corrected this photo sharing problem, and the company is now expected to release another patch that would correct the bug impacting videos too. It’s hard to estimate how widespread the issue actually is, but one thing is clear: until more information arrives, you’d better push back the update to 9.3.1 for a little longer.

Update 1: We've also tried to determine whether this is an issue affecting iOS 9.3.1 exclusively or not, and it turns out it is because sending video files to any older version of iOS, even 7.1.2, works correctly.

Update 2: On the sender's iPhone, videos are listed as "received" and "read," so there might be a problem with downloading the files on the receiving device. We're still investigating and got in touch with WhatsApp to see if this is a known issue.

Stats show adoption of Windows 10 is on the rise

New statistics provided by Net Applications for the month of March 2016 show that Windows 10 adoption is on the rise and the new operating system has managed to achieve another personal best.

But while Windows 10’s growth is clearly good news for Microsoft, there’s another reason for the tech heads in Redmond to celebrate: Windows 7 also keeps losing users, which shows that the new version is slowly becoming successful.

At this point, Windows 7 continues to be the leading choice, as it’s powering 51.89 percent of the desktop computers around the world, but its market share is dropping every month. In the last 30 days, Windows 7 has dropped from 52.34 percent to 51.89 percent, and the same trend is likely to be maintained for the remainder of the year as well. Back in December, Windows 7 was running on 55.66 percent of the PCs out there.

Windows 10 remains the runner-up

Windows 10 is now the second most popular choice among desktop users, so it has a share of 14.15 percent, up from 12.82 percent the month before. Back in December, Windows 10 was spotted running on 9.96 percent of computers.

The other Windows versions on the market continue losing ground, although Windows XP still proves to be a tough nut to crack. XP is now at 10.90 percent, down from 11.24 percent the month before.

Windows 8.1 is also declining, but this isn’t at all a surprise, given the fact that Windows 10 is available as a free upgrade on PCs running this version, so it’s now at 9.55 percent. Mac OS X is still far behind, Net Application claims, with a global market share of 4.05 percent for version 10.11 and 2.06 percent for 10.10.

Linux is even more behind, and it has nearly the same market share as the old Windows Vista: 1.78 percent for the open-source platform and 1.41 percent for Microsoft’s biggest flop ever.

So no, Microsoft isn’t giving up on Bitcoin by any means

There were some rumors that Microsoft might be giving up on Bitcoin support for the Windows Store, and not only has the company no intention of doing that, but it also makes the cryptocurrency a more important part of its software.

A future update will bring native support for Bitcoin currency format in Excel, the company’s spreadsheet application that’s part of the Office productivity suite and that currently exists not only on desktops but also on mobile devices.

According to a reference to a future Office 365 update that has been spotted by Reddit user cartridgez, Bitcoin currency format support will be added to the majority of Excel versions, be they for PCs or smartphones.

“Now use Excel to track, calculate and analyze Bitcoin data using native Bitcoin number formatting options. Feature is being rolled out to Excel 2016 for Windows, Excel Online, Excel Mobile for Windows, and Excel Mobile for Android,” the description of the update reads.

While the amount of information on this update is rather limited, rumor has it that Microsoft might be adding support for eight decimal places instead of two or BTC or XBT currency format in Excel for easier data compilation.

Microsoft’s commitment for Bitcoin

A recent update that Microsoft made to its FAQ pages led everyone to believe that the company could remove Bitcoin support from the store.

But in a statement released shortly after that, the company apologized for the mistake and reiterated its commitment for Bitcoin, explaining that the cryptocurrency would continue being supported by its products.

“We continue to support Bitcoin for adding money to your Microsoft Account which can be used for purchasing content in the Windows and Xbox stores. We apologize for inaccurate information that was inadvertently posted to a Microsoft site, which is currently being corrected.”

There’s no timing for the new Excel update, but expect it to arrive sometime later this year, possibly first as part of insider builds, and then for retail users too.

The Apple vs. FBI seems to continue indirectly

FBI has recently dropped its case against Apple in the San Bernardino iPhone saga after it managed to hack the device used by one of the terrorists without the company’s help, but the feds now seem to be looking to unlock another phone in a completely different case.

The FBI is said to be planning to hack an iPhone and an iPad involved in a homicide case in Arkansas, once again without Apple’s help.

The two devices are related to an investigation against two teenagers who were previously accused of killing a couple in Arkansas, with sources close to the matter suggesting that prosecutors expect to find evidence that might incriminate the two on the Apple products.

While it’s not yet clear what iPhone and iPod models are involved in the case, it appears that the prosecutors couldn’t hack the devices on their own and are now asking the FBI to step in and help break in and access stored data.

Same hack or another one?

The two devices were seized in July last year, but since the investigators couldn’t break in, they were left untouched as the prosecutors were searching for other evidence. Now if the FBI manages to unlock them, it’s believed that critical information, such as communications between the two suspects, could be found.

What’s worrying for Apple is that, in order to unlock these devices, the FBI might be using the same hack that was employed in the San Bernardino iPhone case, despite the fact that the feds specifically said that method would only be used once.

Also, if there’s another way to break into this new iPhone, Apple’s customers could thus be exposed to two different vulnerabilities that would allow the FBI to access their devices, so the company had better lock down iOS as soon as possible to make sure that no such thing is possible.

Rumor has it that Apple is already working on a hacker-proof version of the iPhone, but until it arrives, the FBI seems to be willing to unlock as many units as possible.
