NASA Has a Cyber-Security Problem, Investigator Claims
Posted by: tarekma7 - 03-30-2016 , 11:13 AM - Forum: Security News - No Replies

Sources inside the agency and internal documents reveal the grim state of NASA's cyber-security status

Jason Miller, executive editor for Federal News Radio, is saying that the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has a severe patching problem that's putting many of its systems at risk.

Citing multiple inside sources and internal documents, Mr. Miller is saying that there are hundreds of thousands, if not millions of patches that haven't been applied to NASA IT systems, exposing the company to potential attacks.

While NASA's external shield is strong, the investigator says that, once its external protections are penetrated, a skilled attacker would have no barriers if they want to map the agency's entire internal network and access every nook and cranny.

The blame falls on NASA's cyber-security culture and HPE

Mr. Miller cites various reasons in regard to this situation. First and foremost, NASA is putting missions above everything else. This sometimes means freezing patching operations to mission-related systems in order to avoid any downtime or delays due to bugs or improper patching. Basically, nobody is allowed to touch and patch computers until the mission has ended, leaving systems unprotected for extended periods of time.

Additionally, sources inside NASA are also putting the blame on Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), saying the company has been uncooperative and sometimes negligent. HPE won the $2.5 billion ACES (Agency Consolidated End-user Services) contract in 2010 and should have helped NASA revamp its technology infrastructure under the Information Technology Infrastructure Integration Program (I3P).

The company has failed to do so, and according to Mr. Miller, it is having trouble keeping up with the massive workload.
While HPE has answered Mr. Miller accusations with a one-liner, saying that "Hewlett Packard Enterprise takes security very seriously and remains committed to our close partnership with NASA," a NASA spokeswoman has denied that the agency is having any problems.

NASA says they have everything under control

"Since the 2015 Cybersecurity Sprint, NASA has made substantial progress in tracking and managing vulnerabilities. This agency effort is reflected in [Feb. 15’s] Department of Homeland Security Cyber Hygiene report on NASA, which shows zero critical vulnerabilities older than 30 days since September 2015," the NASA spokeswoman has told Federal News Radio.

In fact, the agency is also preparing to release a new cyber-security tool called Gryphon X, considered by a few experts a cyber-security gamechanger.
Mr. Miller has also contacted Security Scorecard, a US-based security vendor, who has reinforced his initial investigation by saying that their telemetry data shows over 10,000 constant pings from NASA network to known malware hosts.

You can listen to a few of Mr. Miller's comments on NASA's cyber-security problem below, but we recommend reading his entire investigation as well.

Repeated DDoS Attacks Force Coinkite Bitcoin Wallet to Close Down Web Service
Posted by: tarekma7 - 03-30-2016 , 10:10 AM - Forum: Security News - No Replies

Company will move on to Bitcoin-based hardware products

Coinkite, one of the earliest Web-based Bitcoin wallet services, has announced today plans to discontinue its service and focus on a hardware-based Bitcoin products, all because of a barrage of relentless DDoS attacks.

Coinkite, which launched in 2012, started off as a cloud-based cryptobank, with support for Bitcoin and Litecoin. Operating out of Canada, the service became very popular, allowing users to store Bitcoin in the BIP32 HD system, send and receive Bitcoin via email, and even accept Bitcoin as a merchant via a PCI-complaint Bitcoin POS (Point-of-Sale) system.

The service expanded in 2014, when it was one of the first to introduce multi-signature wallets with support for up to 15 members and started offering Bitcoin debit cards.

In recent years, Coinkite began paying more attention to Bitcoin's hardware possibilities, offering some pretty innovative solutions, like Opendime, a USB stick that contains encryption keys that will authorize Bitcoin transactions. Coinkite says that Opendime can be used as real Bitcoin money, and users can pass along an Opendime USB to their friends, as they would dollar bills.

DDoS and state-sponsored cyber-attacks forced the service to shut down

According to a blog post published yesterday, Coinkite is now saying that hardware is where it sees its future on the Bitcoin market, opting to close down its Web-based wallet service and only focus on its hardware products.

While this is all fine and dandy, the service has also grudgingly admitted that a significant role in their decision to move on was how their Web service has faired in recent years.

"Being a centralized bitcoin service does attract attention from state actors and other well funded pains in the [expletive], and as a matter of fact, we’ve been under DDoS since the first month we launched—over three years–yay," the Coinkite team has explained. "Plus we have put real fiat dollars into our lawyers’ pockets, to defend our customers from their own governments. This is not what we love to do, which is coding and delivering awesome services."

Coinkite will move on to the Bitcoin hardware business

The company's plans include continuing developing Opendime, standalone Bitcoin hardware wallets and terminals (with optional printing ability and QR scanners), hardware products for authentication and security, and a line of hardened servers for hosting Bitcoin wallets.

The company plans to shut down the Web-based wallet service in the coming 30 days, but also its adjacent API. Alternative solutions for retrieving funds for users who have failed to claim funds during this 30-day period will be provided at a later point.

Additionally, Coinkite is also warning users of possible phishing scams taking advantage of their announcement and tricking members into revealing their Coinkite credentials, or sending Bitcoin to the wrong accounts.

Chinese Man Purchases iPhone 6s, Gets a Yummy Pancake Instead
Posted by: tarekma7 - 03-30-2016 , 09:59 AM - Forum: Off Topic Chat - Replies (3)

Delicious treat delivered instead of an iPhone

China is the land of surprises when it comes to online shopping from sellers you’ve never met before, and it’s no secret that some of those who hoped to buy something at a price that was too good to be true received anything but the product they actually paid for.

This is exactly what happened to a Chinese man who wanted to buy an iPhone 6s for just $230 (€200) from someone who advertised the device online.
Asked why he was selling the iPhone at such a low price, the seller said that it was “smuggled into the country,” as Shanghaiist reports, so it was 70 percent cheaper than a typical iPhone available in a local store. This has quickly convinced the man to buy it, so he paid the money and waited for the package to arrive at this home.

The iPancake:

And yes, the package did arrive, but instead of the iPhone, he received… a pancake. That’s right, he got a Chinese pancake instead of an iPhone, and although he tried to contact the seller and ask for a refund, he was unsuccessful, pretty much because the person selling the iPancake evaporated.
This story is as funny as it is sad because, if you think about it, the seller actually made the effort of preparing a pancake and then sending it to the unsuspecting buyer. In case you’re wondering, making a Chinese pancake takes around 30 minutes, and the list of ingredients includes flour, oil, water, Asian sesame oil, and chopped green onion (insert drooling emoticon here).

The report doesn’t reveal what the buyer actually did with the pancake, but we’re pretty sure he didn’t eat it. Which is actually a poor choice, given the fact that it was most likely the most expensive pancake he ever got. And it was delivered by post right to his door.

Tabs

This tool works as a container for other Windows - Activity view, Application list, Rule list, Network list, Filter list and Blocker. It simply puts them to a serie of tabs. It may not seem obvious, but all these windows have several things in common:

  • They are all core tools of the client app.
  • They give you inside view into all NetLimiter entities (limits, filters etc.).
  • There are interactive. You can use them create new and edit old things.
  • You can use them to open additional windows to get more information about selected entities.
All of these windows can be opened and docked individually.

Activity

It is the most important window. It displays current network activity and allows you to quickly and easily create limits or firewall rules. All connections are sorted by processes, applications and computers in whose context they were created. Main functions are:
  • By clicking with left mouse button on any column's header you can set how nodes (connections, apps, etc.) will be sorted. If you for example select to sort by UL Rate, then all computers will be sorted, by their upload speed/rate, all applications which come under the computers are sorted the same way and processes and connection inside them are sorted using this method.
  • By clicking with right mouse button on any column's header you will open
    Tools->Options...->Client->Activity
menu, where you can customize behavior of Activity view.
  • By clicking with right mouse button on any node, you will open simple context menu with several interesting functions.
  • In top right corner you can find three small buttons. First one will Reset all Total transferred data counters in Activity view. Second manually Refreshes the Activity view (handy if you have disabled Auto-Refresh in Options). Third one will quickly open
    Options->Client->Activity
    menu.

Filters

A list of all Filters created on the system. It also contains all Zones which are internally just Filters with Type property set to Zone. Use double click or a command Add filter at the bottom of the window to open Filter editor.

Applications

A list of all applications which produced any network traffic on the system. You can clean this list up or view Stats for Selected app (using context menu).

Rules

A clear list of all Rules present on the system. Use it to Add, Edit or Delete rules.

Networks

A list all Networks which ever appeared on the system - currently Active or Inactive.

NetLimiter 4 is a networking software so it works with networks. By Network is meant Ip adress range and its default gateway network interface - as defined in system's routing table. You cannot define them - they are detected automatically, but you can view them on Networks tab in Activity view.

Blocker

Blocker windows is a simple Firewall interface. You can use it to enable or disable a firewall engine, but its main purpose is sort all firewall rules by priority - or assign a priority to them by sorting them out.

There could exist several Rules for a single connection. Blocker allows you to sort these rules by their priority. If a rule is higher in the list then its priority is higher and will be applied to a connection. If you create two firewall rules for same filter and one of the rules will be set to Ask and other to Deny then the one which is higher in the list will be used and the other one (which is lower) will be omitted.

Info View

It displays textual information for selected entity like a node in Activity view, a rule in Rules list etc. It also offers quick access to set tools which are usable for selected item.

Chart

It displays recent network activity for selected node in Activity view. You can use Options menu to customize the chart.

How i cleaned my uncle Laptop without reinstall OS!
Posted by: Mohammad - 03-29-2016 , 03:11 PM - Forum: Off Topic Chat - No Replies

Hello everyone,

I thought, i should share my personal experience with all our forum member
how i clean viruses from my uncle laptop.

This is my hobby to remove viruses from PC/Laptop.

One my uncle son came to my house and ask there are bunches of viruses in his Laptop,
i didn't ask him how it infected because
i know he doesn't have internet and didn't update antivirus from last few years i think it last updated
was 2012.

That laptop mostly he used for general purpose, like watch movies playing games,
insert any USB without scan.

Now started my work.

First i transfer antivirus and malware removal tools in as i inserted USB into laptop then
immediately happened this. :dodgy:

one issue not solved a new one arrived,
then i shared a folder in my PC with readonly permission and created an standard user for security reason
and put all malware removal tools and antivirus and access via network.
1. [Image: 20gxqwi.png]

2. [Image: zyiulj.png]

3. Read till last then you will understand why i used this tool.

I start my mission to clear viruses from laptop.

first i try to install MBAM, but unfortunatly i couldn't install, then i installed KIS trial and updated.
KIS is really very good internet security suite it automatically detacted and start to clean viruses, once it
complted it scan and then i install MBAM Pro trail and scan with that and i really want to say its really
setisfied me and clean all viruses but i want to confirm all viruses has gone or not, then i saw MBAM pro update problem
"Unable to access the update server" then i use[Image: 2e651nd.jpg] "adware cleaner"
which is third one, i used this tool and it clean all adware viruses, then i again did quick scan for sure
there are no virus.

After remove viruses i checked the perfromance it was very smooth and virus free.

If you have any question you can leave question at our Virus, Spyware, & Malware Removal help

Microsoft introduces Office 365 Connectors — what exactly is it?
Posted by: tarekma7 - 03-29-2016 , 11:56 AM - Forum: General Computer Chat - No Replies

"We plan to bring Office 365 Connectors to the Outlook inbox"

While Microsoft has arguably abandoned much of its Hub-influenced interactions it brought with the introduction of Windows Phone 7 and Windows 8, the company appears to be doubling down on the idea of centralized information when it comes to Office 365. As Microsoft continues to grow Office 365 into a platform rather than an enclave of productivity apps, the company is expanding the individual as well as the collective capabilities of the apps with Office 365 Connectors.

In November 2015, the Office team released Office 365 Connectors in limited preview to customers. With a few months of fine tuning, customer feedback and testing under their belts, the Office team is now ready to offer all Office 365 customers access to Connectors.

What exactly are Office 365 Connectors?

In layman’s terms, Connectors represent a set of app API’s that allow Office 365 users to bring in information from their favorite or necessary sources such as Twitter, GitHub, SalesForce, MailChimp, Trello or Bing. Office 365 Connectors is no single end point but a collection of source material that can be embedded in the Office 365 experience, allowing users to keep track of notifications, replies and alerts from outside sources without ever having to leave Office 365.

To some extent, Outlook.com offers a Cliff’s Notes version of this functionality, but Office 365 Connectors appears to be a greater push into getting more partners and more “Connectors” to customers.

Quote:Over 50 Office 365 Connectors are available today, spanning popular applications across productivity, news sources, HR systems, sales, project management, marketing automation, entertainment, eLearning, developer tools and many more. Some examples include MailChimp, Asana, GitHub, Stack Overflow, Aha, Zendesk, Salesforce, Twitter and UserVoice. We are also working with many other partners to enable additional connectors that will be made available soon.

In addition to the current Groups inbox integration, we plan to bring Office 365 Connectors to the Outlook inbox for individual users to leverage and over time to other experiences across Office 365.”

Office 365 Connectors is currently available for First Release Office customers with a later roll-out planned for the general public. For more on the exact number of  Connectors available, or how to get a hold of the new offering, head over to Microsoft’s Support Page for Connect apps to your groups.
