Over the past decade, the number of malware families targeting Linux has grown, but the total number of threats is still orders of magnitude under the malware numbers reported attacking Windows systems.

This smaller number of threats has resulted in cyber-security firms paying much less attention to the Linux malware ecosystem than they normally do to its Windows counterpart.

So it is to no surprise that some Linux malware families have only now been discovered after operating unseen for more than four years.

In a report published yesterday by cyber-security firm ESET, the company details 21 "new" Linux malware families. All operate in the same manner, as trojanized versions of the OpenSSH client.

They are developed as second-stage tools to be deployed in more complex "botnet" schemes. Attackers would compromise a Linux system, usually a server, and then replace the legitimate OpenSSH installation with one of the trojanized versions.

ESET said that "18 out of the 21 families featured a credential-stealing feature, making it possible to steal passwords and/or keys" and "17 out of the 21 families featured a backdoor mode, allowing the attacker a stealthy and persistent way to connect back to the compromised machine."

These malware strains aren't "new," per-se. ESET researchers admitted that they didn't discover these strains first hand. That honor goes to the creators of another Linux malware named Windigo (also known as Ebury).

ESET says that while analyzing the Windigo botnet and its central Ebury backdoor, they found that Ebury featured an internal mechanism that would scan for other locally installed OpenSSH backdoors.

The way the Windigo crew did this, ESET said, was by using a Perl script that scanned for 40 file signatures (hashes) known to have been deployed by competing malware gangs.

"When we looked into these signatures, we quickly realized that we did not have samples matching most of the backdoors described in the script," said Marc-Etienne M. Léveillé, malware analyst at ESET.

"The malware operators actually had more knowledge and visibility into in-the-wild SSH backdoors than we did," he added.

Léveillé says ESET has been using that same list of 40 file signatures to hunt down those malware families for the past few years. Some of the original 40 strains have never been spotted before, most likely because their creators moved on to other malware strains, but 21 of those trojanized OpenSSH backdoors have continued to be used in the subsequent years.

ESET has now released a 53-page report detailing each of these 21 strains. Some of these malware strains are really simple, but some are also very complex, most likely being the work of experienced malware developers.

Linux server administrators can use the indicators of compromise (IOCs) included in this report to scan their systems for these strains.

The report doesn't go into detail of how botnet operators plant these backdoored OpenSSH versions on infected hosts. But if we've learned anything from previous reports on Linux malware operations is that threat actors usually rely on the same ol' techniques to get a foothold on Linux systems:

Brute-force or dictionary attacks that try to guess SSH passwords. Using strong or unique passwords, or an IP filtering system for SSH logins should prevent these types of attacks.
Exploitation of vulnerabilities in applications running on top of the Linux server (e.g. web apps, CMSs, etc.). If the app/service has been misconfigured with root access, or if the attacker exploits a privilege escalation flaw, an initial WordPress plugin flaw can be easily escalated to the underlying OS. Keeping everything up to date, both the OS and the apps running on top of it should prevent these types of attacks.
Unless Linux owners go out of their way to misconfigure their servers, for convenience's sake, they should be safe from most of these attacks.

Facebook accused of striking 'secret deals over user data'
5 December 2018      Emails written by Facebook's chief and his deputies show the firm struck secret deals to give some developers special access to user data while refusing others, according to MPs.

A cache of internal documents has been published online by a parliamentary committee.

It said the files also showed Facebook had deliberately made it "as hard as possible" for users to be aware of privacy changes to its Android app.

Facebook had objected to their release.

It said that the documents had been presented in a "very misleading manner" and required additional context.

The emails were obtained from the chief of Six4Three - a software firm that is suing the tech giant - and were disclosed by the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee as part of its inquiry into fake news.

About 250 pages have been published, some of which are marked "highly confidential".

Damian Collins MP, the chair of the committee, highlighted several "key issues" in an introductory note.

He wrote that:

Facebook allowed some companies to maintain "full access" to users' friends data even after announcing changes to its platform in 2014/2015 to limit what developers' could see. "It is not clear that there was any user consent for this, nor how Facebook decided which companies should be whitelisted," Mr Collins wrote
Facebook had been aware that an update to its Android app that let it collect records of users' calls and texts would be controversial. "To mitigate any bad PR, Facebook planned to make it as hard as possible for users to know that this was one of the underlying features," Mr Collins wrote
Facebook used data provided by the Israeli analytics firm Onavo to determine which other mobile apps were being downloaded and used by the public. It then used this knowledge to decide which apps to acquire or otherwise treat as a threat

"But it's also important that the coverage of what we do - including the explanation of these internal documents - doesn't misrepresent our actions or motives."

Tactics revealed
The correspondence includes emails between Facebook and several other tech firms, in which the social network appears to agree to add third-party apps to a "whitelist" of those given permission to access data about users' friends.

This might be used, for example, to allow an app's users to continue seeing which of their Facebook friends were using the same service.

They include:

the dating service Badoo, its spin-off Hot or Not, and Bumble - another dating app that it had invested in
the car pick-up service Lyft
the video-streaming service Netflix
the home rental service Airbnb
However, others including the ticket sales service Ticketmaster, Twitter's short-video platform Vine and the connected-cars specialist Airbiquity seem to have been denied the privilege.

The following is part of a discussion about giving Facebook's Android app permission to read users' call logs. It is dated 4 February 2015.

The following is from a discussion in which Mark Zuckerberg mulled the idea of selling developers access to users' friends' data. It is dated October 2012, pre-dating the quiz involved in the Cambridge Analytica scandal. It was sent to Sam Mullin, who was vice president of product management.

"It's not at all clear to me here that we have a model that will actually make us the revenue we want at scale. I'm getting more on board with locking down some parts of platform, including friends' data and potentially email addresses for mobile apps. I'm generally sceptical that there is as much data leak strategic risk as you think... I think we leak info to developers but I just can't think of any instances where that data has leaked from developer to developer and caused a real issue for us."

Adobe released patches today for a new zero-day vulnerability discovered in the company's popular Flash Player app. The zero-day has been spotted embedded inside malicious Microsoft Office documents. These documents were discovered last month after they've been uploaded on VirusTotal, a web-based file scanning service, from a Ukrainian IP address.
If victims who received the documents allowed the Flash Active X object to execute, researchers said the malicious code would escalate its access from the Office app to the underlying OS. Here it would drop a JPG file, then unzip another RAR file attached at the end of this JPG file to drop an EXE file on the victim's PC, and then run this file (a basic barebones backdoor trojan).
