Stan Lee, Marvel Comics godfather, dead at 95

Quote:Stan Lee, Marvel Comics godfather, dead at 95
Yahoo Celebrity
Joal Ryan
Yahoo CelebrityNovember 12, 2018 :    Stan Lee, the Marvel Comics godfather who helped create Spider-Man, the Hulk, Iron Man and so many more “feet of clay” superheroes, characters that both reinvented the comic genre and formed the basis for the now-dominant motion-picture form, died Monday, according to TMZ and the Hollywood Reporter. He was 95.

Lee, Marvel’s longtime editor and publisher, was credited as an executive producer on nearly 150 films and TV shows based on Marvel titles, including the billion-dollar-grossing X-Men, Spider-Man, Avengers, and Iron Man franchises. Other productions bearing Lee’s name include the Wolverine, Captain America, Guardians of the Galaxy, Fantastic Four, Hulk, Thor and Doctor Strange films, as well as the Jessica Jones and Luke Cage series.

As of 2017, four of the world’s top 20 all-time box-office hits were based on characters co-created by Lee: The Avengers; Avengers: Age of Ultron; Iron Man 3 and Captain America: Civil War. Many more Marvel movies bearing Lee’s name, if not featuring one of Lee’s signature onscreen appearances, are in the pipeline. In 2018 alone, Lee appeared in Black Panther; Ant-Man and the Wasp; Avengers: Infinity War; and Venom. He will also appear in the untitled Avengers movie, due out in 2019.

Hard as it was to sum up what Lee meant to what we watch, read and consume, the world kept trying. Lee was presented with the Producers Guild’s Vanguard Award, the National Medal of the Arts and a Disney Legends Award. At age 91, he was placed among Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg and George Lucas on Forbes’ annual ranking of the most influential celebrities.

Lee had an aw-shucks take on his career and legacy: “I’m just a guy who wrote comic books,” he would say.

Lee’s own origin story went like this: He was born Stanley Martin Lieber on Dec. 28, 1922, in New York City. In 1939, when he was 17, Martin Goodman, his cousin Jean’s husband, launched Timely Comics, the forerunner to Marvel. Goodman hired the young Lee to refill inkwells for Timely’s editing team, Jack Kirby and Joe Simon, both already renowned for having created the star-spangled Captain America.

When Kirby and Simon left Marvel in 1941, Lee was transformed like Peter Parker was from nerdy high-schooler to Spider-Man: The former gofer was tapped to be Timely’s lead writer, art director and editor-in-chief. The latter title was something Lee, outside a break to serve in the Army during World War II, would hold until the 1970s.

In the 1950s, Timely, which morphed to Atlas, which morphed to Marvel, churned out monster, mystery and cowboy tales. Superheroes surfaced only occasionally. Marvel was on the ropes, and Lee was bored.

“Around 1960, I told my wife, ‘I can’t stand this anymore,'” Lee said. “…My wife said, ‘If you want to quit anyway, before you leave why not do a comic or two the way you want.'”

Around the same time, Lee would recall, Goodman told his editor he wanted a superhero team-up title, à la Justice League of America, a then-hot, new hit for rival DC Comics.

A year later, in 1961, the first issue of The Fantastic Four, co-created by Lee and Kirby, who’d returned to the Marvel fold, was published. The title was unlike anything comic-book fans had seen.

Where the JLA was an all-for-one collective of do-gooders, the Fantastic Four was a group of mutants who bickered.

“I changed the whole line around,” Lee would say. “New ways of [characters] talking, hangups, introspection and brooding.”

Lee’s vision for the superhero came down to this: “Inside their colorful, costumed booties they’d still have feet of clay,” he wrote in his book, Origin of Marvel Comics.

The thinking was revolutionary.

“The beauty of Stan Lee’s characters is that they were characters first and superheroes next,” Jeff Kline, a producer of animated series (Transformers Prime, Dragon Tales), once said. “They never just had superpowers.”

Hulk, Iron Man, the X-Men, the Avengers, Nick Fury, the Silver Surfer, Ant-Man and Black Panther were among the flawed heroes and antiheroes Lee and Kirby cranked out, one after the other, through the early 1960s.

“Lee and Kirby were the Lennon and McCartney of comics,” Dark Horse Comics founder Mike Richardson once told the Los Angeles Times.

With Steve Ditko, Lee co-created Spider-Man, the web-slinging outsider who would become, status-wise, Marvel’s equivalent of Superman. It was Lee who penned, in the very first Spider-Man adventure in Amazing Fantasy No. 15, the words that would famously be boiled down to, “With great power comes great responsibility.”

Researchers Defeat Most Powerful Ad Blockers, Declare a ‘New Arms Race’

Researchers Defeat Most Powerful Ad Blockers, Declare a ‘New Arms Race’
Perceptual ad blockers will come out on the losing side in the war against internet advertisers and expose users to a host of new attack vectors in the process, the researchers warned.

An example of a privilege attack demonstrated by the researchers. Here, Jerry posts an adversarial image to facebook that causes it to be blocked (in red) on every user’s browser.

Ad blockers were created for people who are sick of ads’ constant assault on their senses or who want to improve their internet security. Yet ever since the first ad blockers were released on the internet, there’s been an escalating conflict between adblock developers and advertisers creating ad blockers and ad blocker-blockers.

Last year, Princeton researchers created a perceptual ad blocker, which could visually locate advertisements on a webpage and filter them out. This plugin was supposed to be the “ad blocking superweapon” that would put an end to the ad-blocking arms race since it didn’t target ads based on their code, but on the way they looked on the page.

According to new research published this week on arXiv, however, an AI was able to defeat perceptual ad blockers. Moreover, the researchers warned, ad blockers will be on the losing side of the arms race and expose their users to new attack vectors in the process.

“Our attacks are not a step in a ‘quid pro quo’ arms race,” the researchers wrote. “Instead, contrary to prior beliefs, they are indicative of a clearly pessimistic outcome for perceptual ad blockers. Our results show that if deployed, perceptual ad blockers would engender a new arms race that overwhelmingly favors publishers and ad-networks.”

Ad blockers such as AdBlock or uBlock work by maintaining “filter lists,” which are sets of rules that tell the ad blockers what type of content to block. These lists can be custom-made or users can use one of the many publicly available lists such as EasyList. The problem with filter lists is advertisers are constantly figuring out ways to get around them and creating too extensive of a filter list can significantly slow down a web browser.

Adversarial ad example on Facebook
An example of a privilege attack demonstrated by the researchers. Here, Jerry posts an adversarial image to facebook that causes it to be blocked (in red) on every user’s browser. Image: arXiv
Perceptual ad blockers rectify these shortcomings by blocking ads based on how they look on a webpage. This includes looking for ad cues such as a “Sponsored” link or the close button on pop-up ads, as well as the legally required signifiers that an ad is in fact an ad. Perceptual ad blockers are much harder to subvert in principle because they require advertisers to fundamentally change the content and appearance of the ad. This may result in a less effective advertisement or violation of legal requirements about declaring advertising.
Only a year-and-a-half after perceptual ad blockers were heralded as the end of the ad-blocker arms race, however, a team of researchers from Stanford and CISPA Helmholtz Center for Information Security have discovered a “panoply” of vulnerabilities in perceptual ad blockers that undermine their efficacy and expose users to new attack vectors.

The researchers focused on two types of perceptual ad blocker, one called Perceptual Ad Highlighter and the other called Sentinel, which use neural networks, a type of machine learning architecture loosely based on the human brain, to recognize ads on webpages. These ad blockers rely on a visual classifier that is trained on thousands of screenshots from websites that have their advertisements labeled so that the algorithm can create models of what an ad looks like.

Portable Software: These 100 tools run without installation
Posted by: mrtrout - 11-10-2018 , 10:44 PM - Forum: Freeware - Replies (1)

https://www.computerbild.de/artikel/cb-T...59933.html        SPECIAL PC Tuning - Hardly any system load, execute everything directly
Portable Software: These 100 tools run without installation
by Sebastian Kolar
10.11.2018, 06:00 clock Download and get started by double-clicking! Portable programs hardly burden the PC and even start on external devices via an external USB drive.   install a program, it integrates perfectly with Windows: The installer unpacks it on the system partition and sets up shortcuts in the desktop and start menu for easy access. It also creates registry keys and entries with numerous settings. The downside: during an uninstall often remains back - prevent that with portable tools. The run without installation, dig less deeply and are usually removable without residue. In addition, the following recommendations run via USB stick via double-click on any PC. So you always have your working environment on the road!
Download: Portable programs on the go    Runs immediately: package for every situation
Since portable programs do not write discreetly into the registry, they hardly burden Windows. If such a file is not directly in the EXE format, it is in a ZIP archive: In this case, one-off unpacking occurs before use. Use the Windows context menu - or use 7-Zip Portable or IZArc2Go as an alternative . Some zipped programs load by double-clicking on the start file in the Explorer; this does not work for others, they are essential for unpacking.

The popular CCleaner comes in the form of CCleaner Portable , which thoroughly cleans up the file system. Mostly, the tempo boost awaits you as you clean up your car. LibreOffice Portableis an everywhere office package including word processing and spreadsheet tool. In general, portable tools have all the functions of big siblings; In rare exceptional cases, there are some drawbacks ( Auslogic's Disk Defrag Portable 8.0.18.0 lacks some settings, which can be accessed in the normal version via "Settings> Program Settings").  Use Portable Tools with Dropbox everywhere
Save ready-made portable programs on a USB stick, the settings are retained. So you work on other PCs, the vacation notebook or after a Windows reinstallation seamlessly. It lacks comfort? Create program shortcuts on the desktop and in the start menu - which occupy hardly any memory and refer to the original EXE startup files. Ingenious: Anyone who uses a cloud service like Dropbox and stores portable software in the synchronization folder will use it on any computer connected via Dropbox; As the cloud sync downloads all files, the software works without relying on the internet. Make a change to device A, grabbing it by data synchronization a short time later to device B.

More comfortable offer PortableApps Platform andLupo PenSuite: You provide your own software menu, from which you conveniently call portable tools. PortableApps Platform downloads the tools you want - select in a wizard by ticking. Lupo PenSuite already has programs in excess of 300 megabytes. Technically, portable tools store their settings in INI files - as they used to when Windows did not have a registry yet. Do not delete the INI or XML files of a portable program used for configuration data! It might rebuild it, but changed settings were lost. It makes more sense if something disturbs them: hide them via the properties dialog by clicking on "Hidden". Or you leave all the program files belonging to a portable tool in the corresponding folder and start the tool by creating a new desktop shortcut.  Complete operating systems without installation
LCISOCreator is recommended for saving CD copies : It writes volume contents 1: 1 to ISO images, so saving a Windows CD is no problem. Speaking of ISO: Almost every Linux is in this format; after transfer to CD, DVD or USB stick, Linux runs without installation - after booting from the data medium in so-called live mode.

If you want such a mode for Windows, test WinToUSB [link to container 15300669]: It installs the system bootable on a stick, mimicking WindowsToGo from Windows Enterprise for free for companies. Advantage: Booting a PC gives Windows sole hardware access for high performance. Disadvantage: Windows Portable calls for too many used devices at some point, a re-activation. Alternatively, use Portable VirtualBox : install an operating system of your choice that runs parallel to the main Windows in its own window - and does not require any BIOS changes to boot. Because two systems share resources, virtualized Windows is lower.

Make all applications portable
If a favorite software does not exist in any instant tool variant, EvaLaze helps . You start the program, activate an analysis function and then go through the setup of the desired software. Then stop the recording. Based on the system change log, the tool generates a portable version. You may already be thinking: The program itself is portable.

If that does not work, Portable VirtualBox remains : It encapsulates Windows so it becomes portable - just like any program installed in it. Your "real" Windows does not come into contact with tools installed in it.
These free tools are really easy
