Note that you do not need to be a Creative Cloud subscriber to sign up for Stock (not even the free level of CC), or even to be using Adobe software at all – because Stock can also work standalone. Either way, all you need in order to take advantage of this offer is an Adobe ID, which can be quickly created for free.

Google Chrome Found to Infringe on Malware Patent, Ordered to Pay $20 Million
Google wants to keep fighting against the patent

Google’s Chrome browser infringed on four anti-malware patents, a court in Texas decided, ordering the company to dig for $20 million into its pockets.

According to the case file, the patents were awarded to Allen Rozman, former Lucent engineer, and Alfonso J. Cioffi. Rozman died back in 2012, but Cioffi decided to take Google to court in 2013.

The case was dismissed back in 2014 by US District Judge Gilstrap. Then, plaintiffs acknowledged that under the judge’s interpretation of “web browser process”, an infringement claim wouldn’t hold up. But the case was not close by a long shot because Cioffi and Rozman’s family decided to file an appeal, Law360 reports.

The Federal Court decided that Judge Gilstrap’s decision was erroneous due to his interpretation of the words “web browser process.” Under the original interpretation, a web browser process had to be capable of accessing a website without using another web browser process. That meant that a component of Google Chrome accused of infringing the patents couldn’t meet the limitation set by the definition.

“We see nothing that indicates that Cioffi intended its invention to do anything other than protect ‘critical files’ as that concept is widely understood by those of skill in the art,” the Federal Circuit court wrote in the decision.

The fight may not be over yet

Google has appealed to the US Supreme Court to hear the case, but the request was declined. Google, however, is optimistic and is currently evaluating its options, saying it remains confident that the patents are invalid and that Chrome does not infringe.

Google has had a pretty good record of winning patent trials, but it seems that this time luck wasn’t on its side. Whether the company will do more to fight against the $20 million in damages it has to pay the plaintiffs remains to be seen. The money covers the last four years of the patent, but the royalty will apply to the next nine years until the patent expires, which puts the total sum the plaintiffs could get rise to $65 million.

Fresh Outbreaks of Cerber Ransomware Hits Victims
Cerber offered as Ransomware-as-a-Service is making victims



There’s a new outbreak of Cerber ransomware, security experts warn. What makes this one particularly nasty is that it was offered as a form of Ransomware-as-a-Service (RaaS), which means affiliates can join in order to distribute the malware, while the developers of Cerber earn a commission from each ransom paid by victims.

Security firm Cyren notes that the new outbreaks are being distributed using variants of Nemucod, which is one of the most popular malware distribution tools.

The attack is based on email messages featuring zipped JavaScript attachments. The filenames all have a pretty similar name, starting with “DOC,” followed by a ten digit string and ending with “-PDF”. The file, however, is none of these files, but a JavaScript attachment that will bring you a lot of trouble.

“Following more detailed analysis of the JavaScript attachment, we identified 2 major variants of Nemucod malware, each variant comprising hundreds of samples that all connected to a single distribution site hosting the ransomware. The two major variants are detected by Cyren as JS/Nemucod.GE!Eldorado and JS/Nemucod.ED1!Eldorado,” reads Cyren’s blog post.

Two variants, same goal

The JS/Nemucod.GE!Eldorado variant was first noticed late last year. The malicious code is hidden among random garbage code and it’s not hidden by any encryption. The malware code is really just a few lines that indicate the purpose of it all is to download a file and execute it. The file, titled “cer.jpg” hints about the payload. Once downloaded, the .jpg extension is replaced with .exe, allowing the ransomware to go wild on your computer.

The second variant, JS/Nemucod.ED1!Eldorado is hidden a little better among the garbage code. While the code is a bit longer, the behavior is the same and it even tries to download the same payload on the same site.

Once activated, Cerber encrypts a wide range of document and image files and places the ransomware file in each folder. The worst part about it, is there’s no free decrypter for Cerber, so way to get out of it without paying unless you give up on your files.  That being said, please stop downloading all the files you get over email  if it’s from an unfamiliar source.

A few weeks ago, Microsoft was very proud of Windows 10 for being able to stop malware such as Cerber from infecting people's computers.
