Avast Releases Three New Decryption Tools to Fight Ransomware
There are now 14 anti-ransomware tools available from Avast

With the threat now posed by ransomware, cyber security firm Avast has released three more decryption tools to help victims, reaching a total of 14 such tools.

“In the past year more than 200 new strains of ransomware were discovered, it’s growth of in-the-wild samples two-folded, but the good news is that hundreds of millions of Avast and AVG users were protected against this popular threat,” reads a blog post signed by Jakub Kroustek, reverse engineer and malware analyst at Avast.

The three new decryption tools address three different ransomware strains – HiddenTear, Jigsaw and Stampado/Philadelphia. Some solutions for these particular strains are already available, coming from other security researchers. Avast decided, however, that it is always best to have multiple options.

That’s because these three strains are particularly active and frequently encountered, especially in the past few months. Since the used encryption keys update often, so must the decryption tools. In the end, whether it’s Avast’s tools or those made by other security researchers that work against the ransomware, it’s all for the same purpose.

“Last but not least, we were able to significantly speed-up the decryption time, more precisely the password brute-force process, so e.g. some of the HiddenTear variants will be decrypted within minutes instead of days. The best results are achieved when decrypting files directly from the infected machine,” Kroustek writes.

Decrypting HiddenTear

HiddenTear has been around for a while and the code is actually hosted on GitHub. Given the fact that it is so present, many hackers have gone and tweaked the code and starting using it. Encrypted files have a wide range of extensions: .locked, .34xxx, .bloccato, .BUGSECCCC, .Hollycrypt, .lock, .saeid, .unlockit, .razy, .mecpt, .monstro, .lok, .암호화됨, .8lock8, .fucked, .flyper, .kratos, .krypted, .CAZZO, .doomed. and more.

After all the files are encrypted, a text file will appear on the user’s desktop.

Decrypting Jigsaw

Jigsaw was first spotted in the wild in March 2016, and many of its strains use the picture of the Jigsaw Killer from the same-name movie in the ransom screen.

Keeping up with the movie script, the malware will delete a file per hour if you don’t pay up.

Decrypting Stampado

This particular ransomware has been around since August 2016, and it’s being sold on the dark web. Multiple versions have been circulating on the Internet, one of them is called Philadelphia. Most often than not, Stampado adds the .locked extension to the encrypted files.

Stampado will delete a new file every 6 hours unless you pay the ransom.

Now let’s discuss how to add a watermark in a simple easy way:
 
First step you need to add a photo or multiple photos to the program. The process is very easy and can be done by many methods, using file menu, or add images button (on the main screen) or drag and drop.
You can select many images at the same time using CTRL button and click the images you want to watermark or click the first image and last image with SHIFT button





You can also add a folder containing many images using the main screen button or  file menu.





After the images are added you can see them in the image area. You can easily select the images you will need to add watermark
You can more easily add uMark to the context menu using option menu. This will make it very easy to add watermarks in a single mouse click
Below the image area, you will find two buttons, the upper one lets you check or uncheck all images or toggle selection. The lower one lets you delete all images or the selected ones



Second step is to select the watermark you will add to your images. Simply click add watermark button, you will see many options to select from.
 
Add text watermark;
 
The best is white background and black borders. This will not affect the image and will be clearly visible.  You can add any text you want and customize it regarding the color, font, border, bold, italic, underline. You can also insert special characters using the built-in collection. Many text effects are available to render your watermark a professional look (for example 3D, outline). In addition, watermark effects are available and help you to have a stylish looking watermark. for example, transparency, rotation (normal, diagonal, inverted or specify your own angle value between 0 and 360), tiling (horizontal or vertical). You will be able to change the location of your watermark whether using preset positions or customized place or more easily drag the watermark to the location you want. You can also specify padding or the margins according to the position selected. It may be right or left or top or buttom.
In addition, you can insert watermark macro, for example date, folder name, image name with or without extension, image path, and so on. These are called EXIF properties. Those which are displayed are the available ones for the image. You can also specify auto numbers as watermark for your image using auto number macro. Simply specify the starting number and the minimum number of digits in the pop up window. That’s all!













 

Add Image watermark:
 
You can add any image you want to be your watermark. The process is very easy. Simply use the browse button to find and specify the image you want to use as watermark.  It may be the logo of your website or company. You can customize the image, for example change size, transparency, and greyscale. Other options available for you are similar to the add text options (position, padding, watermark options and tiling)


 
Add shape:
 
This can be rectangular, ellipse, polygon. You will specify it size, and whether the background you prefer is solid or gradient. Other options include watermark options and position of the watermark on the image.


 
Add QR Code:
 
This type of watermark allows you to add text (for example name, link and so on), specify size and background. Also watermark macros are available here and can be inserted according to your wish. You can change the watermark position on image.




 
Add effect: this allows you to add and customize effects to your image. This can be applied as a shadow effect or to the border. It is customizable

You can save any watermark to be used later. You can select many watermarks. This will help you to find your preferred collection with no need to create them again. The up and down arrows below the watermarks area help to rearrange the watermarks according to the user preference. Also, you can delete any selected watermark.







If you have added a watermark and to an image and you don’t like it, simply uncheck this watermark and it will be removed. Please remember to do this before saving the image. Once you save the watermark on the image it is final and can’t be removed

The third step is to save the image after you add the watermark. A dialogue window including the output options will appear and help you to easily specify the destination of the output image. You can tick the option to maintain directory structure if you want. Other output options include output format, metadata, rename and resize
Once you complete these settings click start. That’s all!

A never-ending online dispute puts antivirus vendors against software companies working on browsers, with some experts claiming that security products often slow down or even make programs completely unusable on Windows systems.
At first glance, Microsoft seems to be the big winner in this scandal, as most people blaming security vendors for breaking down PC applications are also praising the Redmond-based software giant for developing an antivirus solution that works correctly and gets along very well with the other solutions running on a computer.

This is the case of Justin Schuh, who is a Google Chrome engineer focused on security and desktop platforms. Schuh said in a tweet that Windows Defender is actually a well-behaved antivirus that plays well with other software solutions, explaining that all the other security products impacted Chrome performance in one way or another.

“Browser makers don't complain about Microsoft Defender because we have tons of empirical data showing that it's the only well behaved AV,” he said in a tweet a few hours ago.

“Defender is the only one I know of that hasn't broken Chrome's security mechanisms,” he continued, praising Windows Defender for working correctly with third-party software.

Microsoft and security efforts
Truth be told, Microsoft itself is investing a lot of effort into getting Windows Defender right, and the upcoming Windows 10 Creators Update will bring several improvements in this regard. Windows Defender will evolve to Windows Defender Security Center, and it will include not only malware detection and removal features but also a number of other tools such as parental controls and PC optimization utilities.

At the same time, the Redmond-based software giant is also working on improving security at an operating system level, with the company aiming to block zero-day exploits and other types of threats, including some forms of ransomware, even when no antivirus is installed.

In the meantime, Windows Defender is becoming more of a security product that seems to be the logical option for Windows 10 users, especially when taking into account this long-distance war between software companies and antivirus vendors.
