The Suwon District Prosecutor's Office charged 11 people on Thursday with stealing tech secrets from Samsung (SSNLF), the office said in a statement.
The prosecutors allege that a Samsung supplier leaked blueprints of Samsung's "flexible OLED edge panel 3D lamination" to a company that it had set up. That company then sold the tech secrets to the Chinese firms for nearly $14 million, according to the prosecutors.
They did not name the people or companies involved in the theft.
Samsung Display, a subsidiary of the South Korean conglomerate, said in a statement Friday that it was "surprised and appalled at the results of the investigation by prosecutors."
The findings come at a time of intensifying competition for new tech among rivals.

Prosecutors said Samsung invested six years and some 150 billion won ($130 million) to develop the bendable screen.
As demand for high-end smartphones begins to wane in key markets, companies have been searching for the next big thing to convince consumers to upgrade their devices.
Samsung's bendable screen had been hyped as a potential game changer. The company teased the tech at a conference earlier this month, showing images of a new folding smartphone.
Samsung is the world's largest smartphone maker, accounting for about 20% of global market share last quarter, according to research firm Canalys.

Marriott: Data breach may affect 500M hotel guests
By Nicholas Sakelaris     Nov. 30 (UPI) -- Marriott said Friday a data breach detected weeks ago may have exposed the personal information of about 500 million guests at several hotel brands, including the W and Sheraton.

The world's largest hotel chain said it learned in September there had been unauthorized access to the Starwood guest reservation system. Marriott said it hired cybersecurity experts and eventually learned that data had been copied and stolen.

For about 327 million guests, the stolen information included a combination of names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, passport numbers, dates of birth and travel plans, the company said in a statement.

For other guests, hackers attempted to take credit card numbers and expiration dates, though it's unclear if they were successful. Some customers had only mailing addresses and email addresses stolen.  Marriott said it found its reservation database has been compromised since 2014 and unauthorized access could affect bookings made as recently as Sept. 10.

"We deeply regret this incident happened," Marriott President and CEO Arne Sorenson said. "We fell short of what our guests deserve and what we expect of ourselves. We are doing everything we can to support our guests and using lessons learned to be better moving forward."

Starwood systems will be phased out as Marriott makes security enhancements, Sorenson added.  "Today, Marriott is reaffirming our commitment to our guests around the world. We are working hard to ensure our guests have answers to questions about their personal information, with a dedicated website and call center."

Marriott, which bought Starwood hotels in 2016, said it's established a website and call center for guests concerned about the breach.

A massive winter storm making its way through Atlantic Canada has forced school closures and flight cancellations, halted ferry services and left hundreds of thousands of customers without power on Thursday morning.

Environment Canada has issued weather warnings in New Brunswick, P.E.I., Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland and Labrador.

The weather agency said winds could gust to 110 km/h in mainland Newfoundland and Labrador, where snowfall amounts were forecast to reach 25 centimetres in the central portion of the province.

Northern Nova Scotia was expected to get upwards of 20 centimetres of snow, with winds gusting up to 80 km/h before conditions were expected to improve Friday.

Environment Canada said the northern coast of P.E.I. could see pounding waves and surf, possibly causing flooding, while eastern New Brunswick could get up to 15 centimetres of snow and blustery winds up to 80 km/h.

Tiffany Chase, a spokesperson for Nova Scotia Power, said the problem affecting much of the mainland originated in Cape Breton, where heavy snow and tree branches on power lines caused an interruption in the transmission system near Port Hawkesbury.

Meanwhile, close to 39,000 customers were without power in New Brunswick. Most of those customers live in the Moncton, Riverview and Dieppe areas.

Marc Belliveau, a spokesperson for NB Power, said crews were being deployed Thursday morning. The utility also brought in five contractor crews in Miramichi and 10 contractor crews in Moncton.

"The biggest issue that is causing outages is high winds — gusting to 80 [km/h] — which is causing tree contact with lines," he said. 

In P.E.I. outages peaked at 51,000 customers for Maritime Electric, and all 7,000 Summerside Electric customers were also out.

Drive with caution

Schools across Atlantic Canada were closed or had delayed openings, and ferry service between Newfoundland and Labrador and Nova Scotia was cancelled until the winds could die down. The Confederation Bridge between P.E.I. and New Brunswick had restricted travel.

Isabelle LeBlanc, director of communications for the City of Moncton, said streets remained slippery and covered with snow.

We have to be aware of the driving conditions and adjust our speeds and driving style to accommodate that.

LeBlanc said salt crews have been out since shortly after midnight and snow removal equipment is clearing city streets.

But she still advised motorists to drive with caution while out on the roads.

"For now everything is business as usual for the City of Moncton."

Codiac Transpo will be out on the roads, but buses could be pulled off if winds start to pick up and reduce visibility.

Al Giberson, general manager for MRDC, the company that maintains the Trans-Canada Highway between Moncton and Fredericton, said there was slush, and snow was blowing and drifting toward the Moncton area of the highway.

"There's going to be some reduced visibility in the eastern section of the Trans-Canada Highway this morning," he said.

The new version of the Opera browser makes it easier for you to stay informed on the latest news and enthralled by the latest Netflix series. Also, like and dislike buttons are on every news article for you to click on, helping Opera’s AI recommendation engine to deliver more interesting news to your start page.

We are happy to let you know that we have made the news section smarter. Thanks to an improved, AI-driven news-selection algorithm, you will now get personalized news recommendations on the start page.



To see the news articles on your start page, scroll down below your Speed Dial folders. You will receive recommended articles by agreeing to the terms presented at the bottom-right part of the screen. You can then select which news topics you would like to see. Click the cogwheel button to the right of the topics to choose different languages as news sources. Multiple languages can be selected to make your start page an international news hub.

You can also nudge the AI mechanism to offer more or less of certain news topics on your start page. Each article has like and dislike buttons, and hovering your mouse over any article will show the buttons. If you like the article and click the appropriate button, Opera will suggest similar articles in the future. That way, you will get a more personalized news experience in the future according to your likes and dislikes.

Netflix recommendations
Many of us face the daily issue of which series to watch next, and the urgency to find something new to enjoy is heightened during the holidays.

Opera 57 makes it easier for you to find your new favorite Netflix series or film in a special section in the news on the start page. When you find something to begin binge-watching, click the recommendation to have it queued up and ready to play on your Netflix account.



Netflix recommendations will be switched on in selected countries including Australia, Brazil, Canada, Czechia, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Hungary, India, Israel, Italy, Japan, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Singapore, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Thailand, the United Kingdom and the United States.

BLADABINDI RAT
A Windows worm propagating through removable drives has been observed by Trend Micro spreading the BLADABINDI Trojan with backdoor, DDoS and RAT capabilities.

The BLADABINDI Trojan has been used in multiple cyberespionage campaigns because of high adaptability which allows bad actors to tailor it for specific targets, seeing that it can be used as a backdoor, for performing DDoS attacks when using it as a botnet, and for exfiltrating user info using its keylogger module.

Trend Micro spotted a new malware campaign which supposedly uses a Windows worm strain the security company dubbed Worm.Win32.BLADABINDI.AA to install a fileless version of the BLADABINDI backdoor.

BLADABINDI uses the AutoIt scripting language to compile both its dropper script and the payload it drops on compromised machines while using UPX packing to obfuscate itself making detection a lot harder.

Once the Trojan reaches a new system, it will look for and delete Tr.exe binaries from the temp folder and installs its version of it, while also making sure it achieves persistence by copying itself into the Windows Startup folder and creating an AdobeMX registry entry which uses reflective loading to load the malware from memory.

This BLADABINDI variant uses multiple techniques to achieve persistence
Loading the malware from the system memory makes BLADABINDI a fileless malware allowing it to go undetected by anti-malware solutions that only scan the system drives.

"Since the executable is loaded directly from the registry to the memory of PowerShell, we were able to dump the specific address where the malicious executable is located," said Trend Micro in their analyis. "And we found out that it is .NET-compiled, which uses a commercial code protector software for obfuscation."

This BLADABINDI strain comes with multiple backdoor tools from keylogging and stealing credentials from web browsers to retrieving and executing files.

The fact that this BLADABINDI variant uses removable drives to spread itself makes it especially dangerous for enterprises and users who use such devices to share documents.

"Restrict and secure the use of removable media or USB functionality, or tools like PowerShell (particularly on systems with sensitive data), and proactively monitor the gateway, endpoints, networks, and servers for anomalous behaviors and indicators such as C&C communication and information theft," advises Trend Micro.
