Windows 10 Cumulative Update KB3140742 Increases Version to 10586.112 |

This update continues to be available as a manual download
Microsoft silently rolled out a new cumulative update for Windows 10 a few hours ago, but as compared to the previous releases, this one is not shipped via Windows Update.
In other words, if you do want to get it running on your Windows 10 device, the only way to do this is to manually download KB3140742 using the official links and install it all by yourself.
While right now it’s not yet very clear why Microsoft hasn’t released the update via Windows Update, it seems that it actually brings significant changes on PCs deploying it. The Windows 10 version is bumped to 10586.112 - but remember that this update is only available for Windows 10 1511 (November Update) and now for those still running the RTM build (10240).
Just bug fixes and performance improvements
Other than that, it doesn’t seem to bring anything else that’s worth mentioning, so it’s most likely focused on fixing bugs and improving performance in specific scenarios, just like its predecessors. Also, if you install this new update, your computer is brought completely up to date, so if you’ve skipped any of the previous patches, that’s not a problem anymore.
Some users might be afraid to install this cumulative update since it’s not available via Windows Update, so to make sure that everything works as it should, you can always create a backup and to be able to restore just in case something unexpected happens.
We’ve already installed this cumulative update on several PCs here at Softpedia, and we haven’t noticed any bug or performance issue just yet.
We’ve reached out to Microsoft for more information on this Windows 10 cumulative update and will update the article when such details are provided. In the meantime, the official download links seem to remain up and running, so users can still get the update manually.

Botched Microsoft Update KB3126446 Now Causing Issues on Windows 7 |

Several reboots might be triggered by this update
Another day, another broken patch released by Microsoft, this time causing problems on computers running Windows 7 and Remote Desktop Protocol 8.0.
One of the updates shipped by the software giant as part of February 2016 Patch Tuesday seems to be pushing Windows 7 computers into a longer reboot loop. Microsoft has already acknowledged the problem and explained that “you may have to restart the computer multiple times after you install this security update on a Windows 7-based computer that is running RDP 8.0.”
Security improvements
The update at fault is KB3126446, and the company provided it to fix security vulnerabilities in Microsoft Windows, as part of bulletin MS16-017. The issues, however, are only experienced on Windows 7 computers updated to Service Pack 1, but the patch is also delivered to Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2.
“This security update resolves a vulnerability in Microsoft Windows. The vulnerability could allow elevation of privilege if an authenticated attacker uses Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) to log on to the target system and sends specially crafted data over the connection. By default, RDP is not enabled on any Windows operating system. Systems that do not have RDP enabled are not at risk,” Microsoft says.
Basically, what it could happen after installing the update is for your PC to reboot several times, but the number of restarts is not yet specified. But once this reboot loop comes to an end, you should be able to start re-using the computer normally, with no other issues likely to be caused by this update.
Certainly, having the machine rebooted several times is not what you’d expect when installing an update released by Microsoft, but you should actually accept it because, after all, it could be worse. This month’s Patch Tuesday turns out to be a fiasco, with several Windows 10 users also complaining of problems caused by cumulative updates released by the company.

Microsoft Still Allows Users to Download Official Windows 7 and 8.1 ISOs |

Trick provides quick access to previous Windows ISOs
As part of its push to move everyone to Windows 10, Microsoft has removed the download links for the official Windows 7 and 8.1 ISOs, so if you’re willing to make a clean install with a previous OS version, it might be hard to create dedicated media.
But the Tech Bench website that Microsoft published in order to allow users to download Windows 10 ISOs can be further tweaked in order to provide access to official ISOs of various versions of Windows 7 and 8.1. The code you can find below comes from WZor (via TechFleece), a prolific Windows leaker who has a good history of providing information on unreleased Windows versions.
While this tweak seems to be working just fine right now, it’s probably just a matter of time until Microsoft blocks it, so you’d better hurry up to get the ISOs while they’re still up.
How to use it
What you need to do is load the Tech Bench page and open the F12 developer console in your browser (pressing the F12 usually does the job).
Go to the “Console” tab in the F12 developer screen and paste the code in the box below the article (we left it untouched, so you’ll also notice some mentions of WZor’s Twitter account).
After pasting, simply press “Enter,” or if you are on Edge, the small play button in the console tab, and you should notice that the list of links on Tech Bench turns blue. Pick the version of Windows that you want to download, follow the on-screen prompts, and you are good to go.
These are the official ISOs straight from Microsoft’s servers, and once again, this trick can be blocked at any given moment by the company. But this is still a neat way to create installation media for your Windows version, especially if you want to delay the move to Windows 10.

Microsoft’s Search Engine Keeps Growing As Google Stagnates |

comScore data shows that Bing improves its share
Microsoft’s currently the only company that keeps investing in the search business in order to compete against Google, and statistics released regularly by third-party market analyst firms around the world show that all these efforts are paying off.
comScore data for the January 2016 reveals a new growth recorded by Microsoft’s search engine versus December 2015 while Google only remained at the same level as before.
Specifically, Bing powered 21.3 percent of the desktop searches in January, up 0.2 percent from the month before, while Google is still head with 63.8 percent. Yahoo comes in the third place with 12.4 percent.
The Windows 10 effect
Certainly, the push that Microsoft’s making these days on Windows 10 helps the company bring more users on Bing too, as the search engine is deeply integrated into the operating system. Furthermore, Bing is the service powering features such as Cortana and Siri, as well as the default search engine in Microsoft’s operating system, so the more users the new OS has, the bigger the Bing market share.
Right now, Windows 10 is said to be installed on approximately 200 million devices around the world, according to Microsoft’s latest figures, but the company continues its free upgrade promo until July 29, so these figures should grow even more in the coming months.
The chart you see below, which is provided by Statista, shows the growth experienced by Bing in the United Kingdom in the last 24 months, clearly pointing to very rapid adoption of the search engine following the launch of Windows 10. The biggest growth was posted in late 2015, again thanks to the arrival of the new OS, reaching a record 9.44 percent last month.
A similar ascending trend should be maintained in the next few months, as more people move to Windows 10 on both desktop computers and smartphones where Bing is the default search engine.

Samsung Galaxy S7 Specs and Hands-on Video Leaked |

More information on the next Galaxy now available
We’re only a few days away from the public unveiling of the Samsung Galaxy S7 and leaks keep coming to provide us with a closer look at the South Korean company’s new flagship phone.
And a new set of photos plus a hands-on video that reached the web today via AndroidAuthority reveal the upcoming Galaxy model in all its glory, confirming some of the things that we’ve already heard about, while also revealing a few new interesting details.
First of all, the Galaxy S7 will come with Android 6.0 Marshmallow from the very beginning, so you’ll benefit from all the updates available in this version currently available on the Nexus 6P and rolling out to other Android devices as we speak.
Nope, you won’t get USB Type-C
Recent rumors claimed that the S7 could be waterproof, but this new report claims that it could be either IP67 or IP68, which means that you might be able to use the phone in light rain, but you can’t obviously throw it in the pool.
Additionally, the device will feature a 12-megapixel camera, plus a 2,800 mAh battery that should easily get you through the day. And what’s more, it’ll include microSD card support for additional storage space, with Samsung planning to offer just two models, with 32GB or 64GB of built-in storage. microSD card support could thus return to the Galaxy lineup, after being removed from the previous model.
The Samsung Galaxy S7 will launch with a microUSB charging port instead of the newer and faster USB Type-C and this is certainly an unexpected decision. USB Type-C is getting widely adopted in the mobile business thanks to the advantages that it brings (including faster charging and transfer speed), so going for microUSB for a new handset is at least a questionable decision.
The video below shows the first hands-on experience with the Galaxy S, but only little can be observed for the moment. You get the typical Android experience for a Samsung device, with Flipboard Briefing enabled by default and Google Apps pre-installed.
The device is expected to see daylight on February 21, with sales very likely to begin early next month.

Windows 10 Mobile Launch to Start on February 29, Microsoft Says |

The Mexican subsidiary of the company releases new info
Previous reports indicated that Windows 10 Mobile could launch in mid-February, but in a recent post on Facebook, the Mexican branch of the software giant has revealed that the new operating system will roll out for Windows Phone devices in the last week of this month.
This isn’t the first time when Microsoft posts information regarding the Windows 10 Mobile release on its social account. However, the previous time the company did this, it was a false alarm, so we can’t fully trust this new date just yet. We’ll believe it when it happens, especially given the fact that long-time Windows Phone users are getting tired of waiting and looking for alternative platforms.
But as WMPU notes, the Microsoft Mexico post reveals that not all devices would get the upgrade to Windows 10 Mobile on February 29, and this is very likely confirmation that Redmond is still planning a staged release. In other words, only a few models would receive it at first while the others are expected to get the upgrade as part of a second wave.
New build coming next week?
While the entire Windows Phone community is waiting for Microsoft to push the release button for Windows 10 Mobile, insiders are also expected to receive a new preview build either this or next week, as the company continues work on the platform.
If the February 29 date is accurate, this could be one of the last if not the last build before the rollout begins, but it’s worth mentioning that the Windows Insider program will continue beyond this date too. Microsoft wants to keep on working with insiders on the operating system, so future updates, including the Redstone release coming in mid-2016, will be developed with help from users.
Keep in mind that there’s still no official announcement from Microsoft that the February 29 is real, so take this with a pinch of salt for the time being.

Yahoo Devs Praise Microsoft’s Windows 10 App Concept |

Yahoo Mail has already been tweaked for Windows 10
Microsoft is hard at work to offer developers the right solutions to bring their apps on Windows 10, so every once in a while, the company provides us with examples of app creators that have already coded for the platform.
One such example is Yahoo, whose Yahoo Mail client is already available in Windows Store, with Microsoft getting in touch with the development team to better explain how the whole process of building apps for Windows actually goes.
In a lengthy post that’s specifically targeting developers, Josh Jacobson, director of product management for Yahoo Mail, explains that Redmond indeed offers major incentives to devs to create universal apps that can be used on both PCs and smartphones.
“We looked at what things we’re limited to in a browser, and what things in a desktop app we could really utilize to help users return to Yahoo Mail and use it as part of their daily workflow,” he said.
One store for everything
Microsoft then goes on to explain the advantages of universal apps on Windows 10, also pointing to the Windows Store as one major advantage because devs can get instant feedback from users downloading their apps.
“The Windows Store itself, for us, was an awesome experience because users are prompted automatically to give reviews,” Josh was quoted as saying. “We didn’t have to do a lot of work to get users to leave reviews, and we got lots of reviews right away as soon as we launched.”
Certainly, Microsoft’s betting big on the concept of universal apps, and this is actually the concept that CEO Satya Nadella is banking on, as it hopes that significant improvements in this regard could help address the lack of apps on the platform. Nadella previously played down the need for Android apps on the company’s mobile platform, asking for more time for universal apps to succeed.
