  Windows Firewall Control 4.6.2.0
Posted by: Mundungas - 02-17-2016 , 02:10 PM - Forum: Paid - Replies (15)

Windows Firewall Control 4.6.2.0

Windows Firewall Control is a powerful application which extends the functionality of the Windows Firewall and provides quick access to the most frequent options of Windows Firewall. It runs in the system tray and allows user to control the native firewall easily without having to waste time by navigating to the specific part of the firewall. This is the best tool to manage the native firewall from Windows 10, 8.1, 8, 7, Vista, Server 2008, Server 2012. Windows Firewall Control offers four filtering modes which can be switched with just a mouse click:

High Filtering - All outbound and inbound connections are blocked. This setting blocks all attempts to connect to and from your computer.
Medium Filtering - Outbound connections that do not match a rule are blocked. Only the programs that you allow can initiate outbound connections.
Low Filtering - Outbound connections that do not match a rule are allowed. The user can block the programs he doesn't want to allow initiating outbound connections.
No Filtering - Windows Firewall is turned off. Avoid using this setting unless you have another firewall running on your computer.

Changes in version 4.6.1.0/4.6.2.0:

  • Fixed: In some circumstances Secure Rules gets enabled even if it disabled in the Security tab. If authorized groups are not already defined, this would delete all the rules which are not in the default groups "Windows Firewall Control" and "Temporary Rules".
  • New: New Security tab was added in the Main Panel which contains the Secure Boot and the new improved Secure Rules feature which automatically removes the rules that are added to a different Group than the defined list of authorized group names. This adds the possibility to the operating system to add required rules without being deleted anymore by WFC because Secure Rules was enabled. Also, unwanted firewall rules that may have been added before the start of WFC service can be detected this way.
  • Updated: The internal logging mechanism was simplified and updated to offer more information about the events that are logged.
  • Updated: A new rule created from the notification dialog without customizing it, is created for Any protocol. From now on it will be created for the protocol that appears in the notification. This change applies also for the rules created automatically for digitally signed programs when Low notification level is used.
  • Fixed: The search from Connections Log works very slow compared to the search from Manage Rules.

  Premiumize Review
Posted by: Cool - 02-17-2016 , 08:41 AM - Forum: Written Reviews - Replies (10)

Premiumize.me is an online could storage provider that allow user to fetch their files easily not only from most of the popular file hosting website but also files from torrent website. It is simple and easy to use as everything is readily accessible through your web browser - there is no need to download any client in order to enjoy the service

User whom put online privacy at their highest priorities would benefits from the service as Premiumize will help you achieve that by securing your data and online identify from being tracked thanks to their encrypted connection. This will hide your IP which is crucial as many of the file hosting company nowadays will log the user/downloader IP address without their awareness (let’s be honest here who will read those term and condition anyway?) which then they claim they reserve the rights to use those information obtained at their “discretion".

Usage and service interface

Take note that Premiumize is a premium service and and currently they did not offer any trial for the new comer. However, user can still sign up for a free account here. Upon logging in user will be presented to their dashboard where all the information pertaining account information such as premium status and so on would be made available here.

The downloader

Click on the Downloader icon and you will be directed to a page as follow shown in figure below.

Simply copy and paste your download link from any supported file hosting site or torrent magnet link to the field provided and click to submit. Files from file hosting service would be available instantly for download whereas files from torrent site would have to wait for the file to be fetch completely by Premiumize in beforehand. Note that if you are lucky and the torrent file which you requested had been fetched earlier by other user then you get instant access to that file without having to wait!

Image above is an example of a completed torrent download with Premiumize. From there user can opt to download the full content as a zipped file or even download the files individually. If your files is recognize as a compatible video files it would allow user to stream it directly with their build in web player or with your VLC player.

Here are the list of website which is supported by the Premiumize downloader

From time to time, Premiumize may add more supported site so keep an eye on the page here for a more updated listing.

Torrent is more than just downloading

Another great feature of Premiumize torrent downloader which we personally liked a lot is it’s ability to seed back the downloaded torrent to a 2.0 ratio. This is to help user to maintain (if not to improve) their seeding ratio on a private tracker site. Currently the feature is at beta stages and only works for torrent which obtained from a private tracker site. You can enable it by ticking the box as shown in figure below

Note that seeding is not available for torrent which obtained from the public torrent site.

Premiumize also offer various plugin and add-on to help boost user experience and accessibility on their preferred devices. User can find all plugin and add-on offered in the page here.

A little bit extra

We also had been mentioning about how accessible Premiumize is, well you can actually integrate magnet link with your browser where any magnet link that had been clicked will be automatically added to Premiumize downloader. Just click on the hyperlink found on the downloader page as shown in the figure below and you are all set!

Something worthy mention - The Fair Use Traffic Limite and Point System

Premiumize practice fair use to their service so that their system resources is fairly distributed among users. This is a great measure to avoid heavy user abusing the system and ensuring that a quality service is maintained at expected level for all users.

Premiumize point system gives all user 1,000 points each month - which equivalent to 1,000 GB worth of transfer. Due to the different demand on different services and also the limitation implemented by certain file hosting itself, thus a point system was created to balance things out. You can learn more about their point system in this page here. Having said so, user who had used up all their monthly quota and needed more of it are allowed to purchase booster pack here.

Wait, there more!

Our first impression is that Premiumize were just a mere online cloud storage service but in fact there are more in store offered by this great service! Here are a few highlights of it

- Downloading from Usenet

Connect to Premiumize newsgroup server with your newsreader or NZB downloader! For more information please refer to the page here.

- VPN

Now you agree with us that Premiumize care about your privacy? VPN is a great tool to help protect your identity online especially if you were on a public networks. You can have it easily set up in a couple of clicks with PPTP (Point-to-Point-Tunneling Protocol) or with an OpenVPN client. It support various operation system ranging from Ubuntu to iOS and even on on Android phone!

For a complete setup instruction please refer to the page here.

- VoIP

Apparently it allow user to make free global call with their VoIP service and at a much cheaper rate. Currently it was in beta stage and unfortunately we are unable to access to the service thus unable to give a more comprehensive information regarding this service. Please refer to this page for more information.

- Geo Unrestrict

It goes as it sound, it allow user to access page which is not available in your area. It is even more useful for user who wanted to browse or use a certain service (Google Music for one good example) which is regional restricted (it also reminds me of internet user from China who can’t access Facebook because it was blocked in their country) . Currently it support United States, Germany, Switzerland, Ireland, United Kingdom and also Netherlands.

For a list of service which it support, please refer here.

- What in store for the free user?

Free user can download and add 3 popular torrent per day to their torrent cloud and get to downloaded the files if the torrent was already in the server cache. Premium account will be required to download new torrent to the server. So, luck is really needed for things to work out for the free user.

Prices

The premium membership start at €7.69 per month. It also offer ample of payment medium for user to choose from.

The Pros

- All in one file hosting downloader
- Can be used for seeding torrent
- Reasonable price (cheap we would say) given that all of it extra service offered such as VPN
- Offer many plugins and add-on
- Instant file grabbing for torrent which in cache
- High speed and stable download speed
- Highly accessible with its integration across devices

The Cons

- We would like to see more file hosting added in the future especially to recently popular Uploaded.ch and etc.
- Unable to add subtitle to online player while streaming.
- Should have allow more customization in torrent seeding for user to set their preferred ratio value (yes we know that it was in beta stage).
- Does not offer a trial for new comer.
- Does not support payment through Paypal

  Question on Windows 10 upgrade
Posted by: Bjourne - 02-17-2016 , 08:39 AM - Forum: General PC Help - Replies (3)

Question on Windows 10 upgrade

Might be a very late question here but pardon and here me out :Smile

Still on Windows 7 Ultimate here and currently I do not have any issues whatsoever with it. Smooth as silk Smile
Just wanna ask about the free upgrade offered by Microsoft. I have quoted the text below from the FileCritic ebook(I know I got it from here).

Quote:Windows 10 will be launched on July 29th, 2015. Microsoft has announced that Windows 10, will be offered as a free upgrade for users with a genuine license of Windows 7, or Windows 8 or Windows 8.1. The free upgrade offer is valid for one year since the launch of Windows 10, which would make it available as a free upgrade until July 28th, 2016

Once Windows 10 has been activated on a PC, it will continue to receive free updates for the lifetime of the device.Microsoft has announced that the activation process also requires users to connect to a validMicrosoft Account on the device. The linking of the Microsoft Account to the PC, is-essential for the validation of Windows 10, in the event of future clean installs.

Windows 10 comes in seven editions, and users with a genuine license of Windows 7, 8 or 8.1, will be able to upgrade to the edition corresponding to the one they own.

Note: Windows 10 is not a free upgrade for Windows XP users.

Now just a couple of questions guys:

1. If I decide to upgrade to Windows 10 (so I have Win 7 Ultimate so I'll get Windows 10Pro right..?), is the update process online..? Or can I upgrade by downloading the latest build and install-over my existing Win 7 Ultimate setup...?

What may be the better thing here..? My internet is currently shit so I guess the online method is not an option. What can you advice me on this please..?

How is the whole upgrade process..?

Can I do a clean-install of Win 10 and then use my Win 7 Ultimate license...?

Is a clean install possible here..?

2. Assuming that I have upgraded to Windows 10 Pro without any issues but I want to downgrade because of some issue I encounter. What is the best approach to do..? What happens to the license..?  Can I back-up that license and use it again?

How maybe will the activation process be..?

3. If in the future I decide again to go with Windows 10 Pro(after say a couple of months after the downgrade and after the July 28th, 2016 deadline), will I be able to go back to Windows 10 Pro..?

So I'll leave it at that first and wait for your replies.

Thanks Smile

Backdoor in MVPower DVR Firmware Sends CCTV Stills to an Email Address in China
Posted by: tarekma7 - 02-17-2016 , 02:14 AM - Forum: Security News - Replies (1)

Firmware developer pulls project off GitHub when confronted

IoT security experts from Pen Test Partners have confirmed the presence of a backdoor in the firmware used by some DVR devices commonly deployed with CCTV surveillance systems.

Security researchers from Pen Test Partners have a regular habit of picking up random IoT equipment and testing it for security vulnerabilities.

In their most recent round of tests, the team decided to expand the scope of their research into CCTV systems. Since they've spent quite some time breaking down IP cameras, the researchers decided that this time around they would test DVRs (Digital Video Recorders), which are also part of standard CCTV setups.

MVPower DVR laced with security issues
For their experiment, the team picked up a random, cheap device off Amazon, choosing a DVR manufactured by MVPower.

The team immediately went to work on the device and only after a quick battery of tests discovered a large number of security and privacy issues.
The researchers managed to bypass the device's Web-based login system by manually setting a random username and password in their browser's cookie, were able to force the device to start as root, and eventually opened a Web shell that allowed them to run commands on the DVR.

They've also managed to install a reverse shell for easier access to the device's terminal, discovered that the device had no CSRF protection, no brute-force attack protection, and found out that the lack of HTTPS communications for the Web admin panel exposed its users to MitM attacks.

MVPower DVRs are sending CCTV feed snapshots to a hard-coded email address

But that was only the beginning. Buried deep in the firmware's code, the team discovered a backdoor functionality that was taking snapshots of the first camera and sending it to an email address hosted on a Chinese email provider.

The email address is "lawishere@yeah.net," the email's subject was "Who are you?" and the email's body contained a 320x180px snapshot of the CCTV feed.

After digging around for more clues, Pen Test Partners discovered that the firmware was taken from the JUAN-Device GitHub repo, managed by someone named Frank Law.

The GitHub repo was taken offline last August after British developer Gregory Fenton confronted Mr. Law about this issue.

Let the conspiracy theory begin

Pen Test Partners says that the email address is still active. A quick Shodan search shows that there are currently around 44,000 devices available online that have the same server header like the one broadcasted by the MVPower DVR.

Besides their Amazon store, neither Pen Test Partners nor Softpedia has managed to find any online presence for MVPower.

"We can’t find any detail on the name MVPower," Andrew Tierney of Pen Test Partners noted. "The firmware suggests commonality with Juantech, but none of their firmwares [sic] are compatible."

Since the company is so hard to get hold of, you can forget about receiving any firmware updates for any of the above-listed security issues.

As a coincidence, we've noticed that both Juantech and the Yeah.net email provider are registered in China's Guangdong province (near Hong Kong).

How to Access Your Google Chrome Passwords from Any Browser
Posted by: tarekma7 - 02-17-2016 , 02:05 AM - Forum: Guides, Tips & Tricks - Replies (1)

Access your Chrome passwords via a special URL

If you're using Chrome to store your passwords, but you can't access the browser at any specific point, or you don't want to sync your passwords to a strange computer, Google has your back.

For a while now, Google has set up a special page that you can access called Google Passwords (passwords.google.com). This page is where all the passwords you've synced through Chrome will appear, just in case you need to access them from another browser or while on the go.

How to set it up!

Step 1: To benefit from this feature, the first thing you'll need to do is sign into your Google Chrome profile by going to the Google Chrome settings page (first option on the top).

Step 2: After you've signed in, you need to make sure your passwords are syncing in the Sync window, and that you have the following option checked: "Encrypt synced passwords with your Google credentials" (at the bottom of the window, in the Encryption options section).

Step 3: Now close the popup, give it a few minutes to sync, close Google Chrome, open another browser and navigate to passwords.google.com.

Step 4: Once authenticated with your Google credentials, so Google can now it's really you, you'll see a list of all your accounts and their passwords, along with the option to unblur the passwords and have a look at the actual text.

In case you change your mind

Scenario 1: In case you don't think it's a good idea to have your passwords accessible via a section of your Google profile, then don't worry, because this can be reversed.

Just go back to step 2, and instead of the first option, choose the second, which reads: "Encrypt all synced data with your own sync passphrase." This means Chrome will encrypt data with a custom encryption key you decide, instead of your Google account password.

Because Google knows your account password but doesn't know your secret passphrase, the passwords won't show up anymore in the Google Passwords page, because Google won't be able to decrypt them.

The passwords will continue to sync between devices and Chrome instances, but Google won't be able to tell what they are, and the Google Passwords Web page will show an error instead.

Scenario 2: In case you decide syncing your passwords is a bad idea overall, just go back to Step 2, reset the passphrase, select not to sync anything from the dropdown at the top of the popup, and just sign out your identity from Chrome.

This way the browser won't keep tabs on you anymore, and you'll have to rely on your brain or a password manager to remember your passwords.

Posted by: tarekma7 - 02-17-2016 , 12:15 AM - Forum: Security News - Replies (1)

Key Results:

• Among respondents, the four most important aspects of a security protection product were: o Good detection rate of malicious files  o Low impact on system performance o Good proactive protection without using the cloud o Good online protection rate while surfing the web

• Avast is the most popular mobile security solution worldwide, while Kaspersky makes the top five in every continent.

• The share of Android as the mobile OS has fallen slightly since last year, but is still used by over two thirds of respondents. Apple’s iOS is the only other mobile OS to reach double figures, at just over 18%.

• A majority of users (over three quarters) were well protected in the last 6 months; only a minority reported that their security product had failed to protect them against malware infection in this period. Over a third (35%) stated that their security product had blocked malware within the last week, indicating how easy it is to encounter a threat.

• The number of users who rely on free desktop security software has fallen again this year, but is still just over a third (34%). Around 4% do not use any security solution, meaning that over 60% of respondents pay for protection.

• Getting on for half of respondents (46.9%) have moved to Windows 10 this year, leaving Windows 7 with just under a third of users (32.2%).

• Google Chrome is still the most popular browser with 40%, but its lead over Mozilla Firefox has fallen slightly to only 1.3%. Despite being the recommended browser in the popular new OS Windows 10, Microsoft Edge is only used by 3.5% of users overall.

• As regards trustworthiness of reviews, forum and YouTube reviews both scored low again, whilst all the computer magazines/websites/institutes achieved scores between 3 and 4 out of 5.

• There is a wide range of views as to the fifteen test labs we asked users about. We are pleased (and humbled) by our top score of 4.7 out of 5.

We are grateful to everyone who completed the survey, and for respondents’ trust in AV-Comparatives. The feedback we have gained will be used to ensure that our tests continue to grow in effectiveness and relevance.   AdwCleaner 5.034
Posted by: tarekma7 - 02-16-2016 , 11:51 PM - Forum: Freeware - Replies (3)

AdwCleaner is a program that searches for and deletes Adware, Toolbars, Potentially Unwanted Programs (PUP), and browser Hijackers from your computer. By using AdwCleaner you can easily remove many of these types of programs for a better user experience on your computer and while browsing the web.

AdwCleaner is a tool that deletes :
· Adwares (software ads)
· PUP/LPI (Potentially Undesirable Program)
· Toolbars
· Hijacker (Hijack of the browser's homepage)

The types of programs that AdwCleaner targets are typically bundled with free programs that you download from the web. In many cases when you download and install a program, the install will state that these programs will be installed along with the program you downloaded. Unless you perform a Custom install, these unwanted programs will automatically be installed on your computer leaving you with extra browser toolbars, adware, and other unwanted programs. AdwCleaner is designed to search for and remove these types of programs.

AdwCleaner Usage Instructions:
Using AdwCleaner is very simple. Simply download the program and run it. You will then be presented with a screen that contains a Scan and Clean button. The Scan button will cause AdwCleaner to search your computer for unwanted programs and then display all the files, folders, and registry entries found on your computer that are used by adware programs.

When the scan has finished, look through the scan results and uncheck any entries that you do not wish to remove. When you are satisfied with the selection, simply click on the Clean button, which will cause AdwCleaner to reboot your computer and remove the files and registry entries associated with the various adware that you are removing. On reboot, AdwCleaner will display a log showing the files, folders, and registry entries that were removed.

It is also important to note that certain adware programs such as Babylon and Delta Search include a program that alerts you when a program is trying to change your browser's search or home page settings. When running AdwCleaner it will reset your search settings to the default Microsoft one if it detects it has been changed by an adware. If you see the warning that states AdwCleaner is trying to change your browser settings, please allow it to do so.

AdwCleaner also contains some advanced options that disable certain detections. To access these options, you can click on the question mark (?) in the upper left corner of the program and then click on Options. You will then be presented with a dialog where you can disable various detections.

These options are described below:
/DisableAskDetection - This option disables Ask Toolbar detection.
/DisableIEDetection - This option disables Internet Explorer specific detections.
/DisableFFDetection - This option disables Firefox specific detections.
/DisableChromeDetection - This option disables detections for Chrome & Chromium based browsers.
/DisableOperaDetection - This option disables Opera specific detections.

Microsoft Releases Windows 10 Cumulative Update KB3140742
Posted by: tarekma7 - 02-16-2016 , 10:46 PM - Forum: General Computer Chat - No Replies

This CU is not available via Windows Update though

Microsoft has just released a new cumulative update for Windows 10, but for the moment, it doesn’t seem to be available through the usual Windows Update distribution system.

At this point, the only way to get cumulative update KB3140742 is to manually download it, so you can click the links at the bottom of the article to do so. Make sure you get the right version for your computer and please note that KB3140742 is only available for Windows 10 1511 (November Update), so users still on the RTM build (10240) won’t be able to install it.

Microsoft is yet to publish a KB article for this update, so it’s not yet clear what it includes, but most likely, it’s all about bug fixes and performance improvements. The recently released Windows 10 update history page doesn’t provide any information on update KB3140742 at the time of writing this article.

It replaces previous cumulative updates

Since it’s a cumulative update, it includes all the fixes that Microsoft rolled out in the past, so if you install this one, your computer should be brought fully up-to-date.

As Microsoft puts it, “Windows 10 updates are cumulative of all previous updates. Installing the latest one makes your device current.”

The previous cumulative update for Windows 10 caused quite a lot of issues on Windows 10 version 1511, with several users complaining that the patch failed to install, while others revealed that it reset their default apps.

According to Microsoft, KB3135173, which was released on February 9 and bumped version number to 10586.104, brought improvements and security fixes, but for some reason, it failed to work properly on a number of PCs. So today’s updates could come to address these problems, but it’s not yet clear why it’s not shipped via Windows Update, but only through the manual download links.
