Microsoft Releases Windows 10 Cumulative Update KB3140742
Posted by: tarekma7 - 02-16-2016 , 10:46 PM - Forum: General Computer Chat - No Replies

This CU is not available via Windows Update though

Microsoft has just released a new cumulative update for Windows 10, but for the moment, it doesn’t seem to be available through the usual Windows Update distribution system.

At this point, the only way to get cumulative update KB3140742 is to manually download it, so you can click the links at the bottom of the article to do so. Make sure you get the right version for your computer and please note that KB3140742 is only available for Windows 10 1511 (November Update), so users still on the RTM build (10240) won’t be able to install it.

Microsoft is yet to publish a KB article for this update, so it’s not yet clear what it includes, but most likely, it’s all about bug fixes and performance improvements. The recently released Windows 10 update history page doesn’t provide any information on update KB3140742 at the time of writing this article.

It replaces previous cumulative updates

Since it’s a cumulative update, it includes all the fixes that Microsoft rolled out in the past, so if you install this one, your computer should be brought fully up-to-date.

As Microsoft puts it, “Windows 10 updates are cumulative of all previous updates. Installing the latest one makes your device current.”

The previous cumulative update for Windows 10 caused quite a lot of issues on Windows 10 version 1511, with several users complaining that the patch failed to install, while others revealed that it reset their default apps.

According to Microsoft, KB3135173, which was released on February 9 and bumped version number to 10586.104, brought improvements and security fixes, but for some reason, it failed to work properly on a number of PCs. So today’s updates could come to address these problems, but it’s not yet clear why it’s not shipped via Windows Update, but only through the manual download links.

Microsoft Won’t Update Windows 10’s Data Collection Services, and It Makes Sense
Posted by: tarekma7 - 02-16-2016 , 09:04 PM - Forum: General Computer Chat - No Replies

Redmond sets things straight in a long saga

Microsoft has finally put an end to a several-week-long privacy saga started following a third-party investigation claiming that Windows 10 sends tons of information from our computers to the company even when telemetry settings are off.

Reports that were published soon after this investigation argued that Microsoft might actually update Windows 10’s telemetry settings in order to allow users to switch them off completely, thus making sure that absolutely no information leaves their computer.

But in a statement released recently, Redmond clearly says that there’s nothing new to share beyond the September post when Terry Myerson, head of the OS group at Microsoft, explained that users have control over their privacy settings, but certain information still needs to be collected.

Only critical information collected, no personal details

This includes app crash data and OS reports that are absolutely needed in order to improve the operating system and fix issues that might exist on a number of computers. Myerson guaranteed that absolutely no personal information is collected from Windows 10 devices, and all details are encrypted and stored on secure servers.

“We collect a limited amount of information to help us provide a secure and reliable experience. This includes data like an anonymous device ID, device type, and application crash data which Microsoft and our developer partners use to continuously improve application reliability. This doesn’t include any of your content or files, and we take several steps to avoid collecting any information that directly identifies you, such as your name, email address or account ID,” Myerson added.

As a result, Microsoft has no intention of tweaking Windows 10 telemetry settings any further, and it actually makes sense. The company needs some data to improve the operating system and correct the problems that many might be experience. This is actually the only way to make sure that it receives information on bugs and performance issues, as giving users the option to opt out of this behavior might actually dramatically reduce the amount of crash reports the company gets.

Upcoming Windows 10 Redstone builds to feature more Edge improvements
Posted by: tarekma7 - 02-16-2016 , 08:53 PM - Forum: General Computer Chat - No Replies

Microsoft has finally started implementing new features in its latest internal Redstone builds, the first of which appear to focus on the company’s new Windows 10 browser, Edge. Microsoft is working to make Edge a viable alternative to other popular web browsers in Redstone, by introducing extensions and other much needed features.

In the latest builds of Redstone, Edge now features a save download prompt, meaning Edge will no longer automatically save downloads when a download is being offered. This is a much requested feature which surprisingly is not present in the current public release of Edge, and to many considered a security issue as the browser simply downloads whatever a webpage is offering without the users consent.

Microsoft is also working on implementing a number of new technologies behind the scenes as well, such as Web Notifications. In the latest internal builds, the flags area within Edge includes an option to enable Web Notifications, however it is unclear if these will actually be working by the time the next Insider drop is released.

Additionally, the company is also making it easier to open inPrivate tabs on Mobile, with the latest Windows 10 Mobile builds featuring a button that opens an inPrivate tab directly from the tab screen, instead of hiding it in a menu like currently. Current internal versions of Microsoft Edge are on version 31, 6 versions newer than the current public release at version 25.

Of course, there will be further improvements and features made to Edge and the rest of Redstone over the coming months leading up to its release in June/July. But it’s good to finally start seeing features get implemented into the main Redstone development branches.

With these changes, it’s clear Microsoft is serious about its new Edge browser. With extensions coming very soon, it’s likely many will start using the browser full time over other browsers such as Chrome and Firefox, since Windows 10 and Edge go hand in hand for a better browsing experience.

Microsoft is currently flighting new builds with these changes in as we speak, however it is unclear whether these Edge improvements will be in the next drop or the one after. Regardless, these changes are coming and are very welcome additions to the Edge feature-base, which right now is looking rather bare compared to rival browsers.

Beware, KB3135173 for Windows 10 may reset default apps (again)
Posted by: tarekma7 - 02-16-2016 , 08:50 PM - Forum: General Computer Chat - No Replies

Reports are coming in that the recent patch for Windows 10 with the identifier KB3135173 may reset default applications on systems it is installed on.
We have talked about Windows 10 resetting default applications before, the first time happening shortly after release of the operating system.

The changes did not affect all users of Windows 10 back then who installed the responsible update at that time but those who were affected reported that default apps for web browsing, pdf viewing and photo viewing were reset, and that programs were removed from the system as well.

KB3135173

KB 3135173 is a cumulative update for Windows 10 that Microsoft released on February 9, 2016. It fixes vulnerabilities reported in the security bulletins MS16-022, MS16-021, MS16-016, MS16-014, MS16-013, MS16-011 and MS16-009.

You find information about these security patches in our patch day overview for February 2016.

Users noticed that something was not right after the patches were installed and the machine rebooted for the first time.

The Action Center started to display one or multiple notifications on the screen that app defaults were reset listing the file type that was reset, and the default system application it was mapped to.

An app default was reset. An app caused a problem with the default setting for .avi files so it was reset to Films & TV.

This happened for custom file associates for file types such as pdf, avi, mp4, jpg or png, and each time the file type was reset to one of the default applications Windows 10 ships with.

Even worse, while it is seemingly possible to associate different apps or programs with the reset file types, Windows 10 would reset those associations a moment later making it impossible to use custom file associations on affected PCs.

Temporary solutions

So what is the solution for users who are affected by this issue? One course of action is to uninstall the update and block it from running, but it is not suggested since it patches security issues. Removing it will make the system vulnerable to attacks targeting those vulnerabilities.

The Winhelponline Blog created a Registry file that supposedly fixes the issue. I was not able to test it as my test systems were not affected by the issue.

After running the REG fix, open Control Panel > Default Programs and set file associations or default programs as you prefer. None of the built-in Universal Apps should reset the associations from now on. This method has been tested (and works fine) in Windows 10 Build 10586.

Changing file associations on Windows 10

Windows 10 offers several options to choose default applications for file types. The starting point for all of them is the operating system's Settings application.

  1. Tap on Windows-I to open the Settings application.

  2. Navigate to System > Default Apps.

There you find programs or apps associated with popular application types such as email, web browsing or music playing.

You can associate programs with those types right away, but may want to use the three options listed below those for finer controls.

-Choose default apps by file type displays all known file types and the applications they have been associated with.

-Choose default apps by protocol displays protocols, such as http or ftp and the applications or programs they are associated with.

-Set defaults by app finally opens the classic "set default programs" dialog of the Control Panel. Select a program from the list, and associate all file types and protocols with it that it supports (or customize the selection).

Closing Words

The resetting of custom file and protocol associations should never happen on its own, and it seems that Microsoft needs to adjust the parameters that are responsible for the resetting to make sure it won't happen again in the future.

For now, it is wise to check default applications, file associations and even installed programs after updates regularly to make sure none were affected by it.
Windows 10 users may also want to create system backups, or at least System Restore points, before running any updates that Microsoft put out for the operating system.

  Sandboxie v5.08
Posted by: tarekma7 - 02-16-2016 , 08:09 PM - Forum: Paid - Replies (3)

When you browse the Web, changes occur to your computer system. Some of these might be harmful, like the unsolicited installation of malware. When you use Sandboxie to protect your browsing session, it catches all these changes just as the browser is about to apply them into your computer system. Sandboxie does record these changes on behalf of the browser, but it records them in a special isolated folder, called the sandbox. Thus, with Sandboxie, you can browse the Web securely while still keeping all your browser's functionality for active and dynamic content, such as javascript and ActiveX. All undesired side effects can be easily undone.

What is NEW:

Improvements to application startup. Applications start faster and Windows 10 race conditions have been fixed.

A problem with splwow64.exe in Win 8.1+ 64 bit has been fixed. If a user printed from inside the sandbox using a 32 bit app, printing outside the sandbox would no longer work.

Office 2013 in Windows 10 is working under Sandboxie again.

F12 Developer Tools now works in IE-11.

In rare instances, SandboxieRpcSs.exe or SandboxieDcomLaunch.exe would not end when all other applications had exited.

A file named c:\program.exe no longer prevents SandboxieRpcSs.exe from starting.

The known conflicts list in templates.ini has been updated.

Fixed wrong Windows version # reported for Windows 8.1 (e.g. with whatsmyuseragent.com). Windows 8.1 was reported as Windows 8.0.

Windows 10 fast ring build 14251 "IsHungAppWindow" hook issue.

Fixed rare Chrome 64 error SBIE2303 Could not hook VerifyCatalogFile (888).
