Cryptojacking surges and here’s what to do about it

The Microsoft Eternal Blue vulnerability turns out to be a useful tool in illicit cryptomining.


In the bustling industry of cybercrime, ransomware has always been a popular weapon of choice...until this year. In 2018, illicit cryptomining (AKA cryptojacking) took the title, surging 459%. Cryptojacking is the crime of using somebody else’s computer processing power to mine cryptocurrency. Victims may not even notice, as there are no outward signs that the mining is occurring, save possible slowing down or overheating of the system.

On Wednesday, the Cyber Threat Alliance published a report on cryptomining, including key findings that the Eternal Blue vulnerability on older Microsoft systems plays a major role in cryptojacking. Eternal Blue was the cause of 2017’s WannaCry and NotPetya ransomware outbreaks, and while a patch has been available for a year and half now, the key findings state, “there are still countless organizations that are being victimized by this exploit.” Cybercriminals have simply adjusted the use of the flaw from ransomware to cryptojacking.

While acknowledging that cryptojacking has increased throughout 2018, Avast Security Evangelist Luis Corrons isn’t so sure it has everything to do with the NSA software leak, the EternalBlue exploit. Rather, Corrons points out, EternalBlue became well-known once WannaCry hit the scene, and “there were attacks on companies that used this exploit to infect computers with cryptomining well before WannaCry.”

“The point is,” Corrons continues, “because cryptojacking equals free money, it’s become popular. And not only are there pointed attacks simply to mine, but there are also cases where it is a ‘side business.’” A side business, Corrons explains, is when cybercriminals compromise a computer and not only steal data and credentials, but also do cryptojacking. “So any time a cryptojacking attack is detected — and this is especially critical for SMBs — it points to the fact that security issues must be addressed, and immediately,” Corrons says.

To keep your CPU power protected and working for you alone, Avast recommends you protect yourself from cryptomining by doing the following:

Stay updated — Update all operating systems and apps as soon as the updates are released. Cybercriminals have a difficult time cracking into new versions of software, but they can do their dirty work through old versions that have known flaws.

Use an antivirus — Good cybersecurity like Avast Free Antivirus blocks malware, including cryptojacking schemes, and will alert you if any websites you try to visit are unsafe.

- This is how future generations will gain information and shape their opinions. We must do everything in our power to ensure that this is done in a fair and impartial way. This is based on the whole future of trust, faith and trust in our democratic processes - added Farage.

He also addressed the issue of technology companies that punish those who try to use the Internet to 'promote violence, terrorism and extremism.' He warned that such powers, if they could not be controlled, could be used to 'close the debate on sound democratic conservative values'.

on Thursday, September 20, 2018 |       Global Internet security firm Quick Heal Technologies has detected more than 180 million threats on desktops and laptops with Windows Operating System in India.

According to the quarterly threat report released by the firm on Wednesday, more than 2 million malware, 16,000 ransomware, 13,000 crypto-mining malware, 141,000 exploits, and 40,488 potentially unwanted applications (PUAs) and adware are detected on a daily basis.

“More than 18 crore threats were detected on Windows devices of individual and enterprise users between April and June 2018. May was the busiest month, with more than 74 million incidents detected, followed by April and June that witnessed 55 million and 51 million detections respectively,” a Quarterly Threat Report 2018 said.


“The absence of appropriate cybersecurity measures has also made users and businesses across India more vulnerable to emerging threats,” it further added.

Joint Managing Director and Chief Technology Officer, Sanjay Katkar said in a statement, "Cybercriminals are at a completely different level today than they were a few years ago. They are using novel technologies to drive increasingly-complex attacks and are targeting larger user bases."

"The latest threat report highlights this risk that individuals and businesses in India currently face with this evolution of the threat landscape," Katkar said.


The Trojan Horse families have registered a quarter-on-quarter growth of four percent in the second quarter of 2018 and remained the most dominant malware in this quarter also.

“Individual users and businesses across India need to understand the massive risk that they are exposed to at present. Ignorance is not a viable cybersecurity strategy. The need of the hour is to drive large-scale adoption of cutting-edge security solutions such as those offered by Quick Heal and Seqrite,” he said.

However, the rise of cryptojacking remains the biggest worry, as it is getting direct monetary benefits to cybercriminals.

“Cryptojacking attacks remain undetected for a long time and can often be used as a platform to launch other complex attacks…over 3 million cryptojacking hits were detected till May 2018, with the number of active mobile cryptojacking variants increasing to 25,” the report said.
